   Extractions: Botany 429 is an advanced course in plant genetics. It covers a range of topics many of which are specific to plants. Students taking this class are usually interested in learning more genetics and, at the same time, in becoming more familiar with plant biology. In previous years, the enrollment has been between 10 and 40 students, mostly junior and seniors, but also some graduate students. About one third were Botany majors, while the rest were in other biological majors, most commonly Molecular and Cellular Biology. A few students were from Forestry. In the past, this course has got very good evaluations, although most students agreed that it was quite challenging. Improve root and stalk strength and green snapping evaluation methods to efficiently evaluate large numbers of genotypes in diverse environments. Develop random progenies from breeding populations and landraces that will allow characterization of the potential for extraction of inbred lines that yield well per se and in hybrid combination in terms of inbreeding depression, additive genetic variance, and dominance genetic variance. Coordinate cooperative evaluation programs designed to optimize the quantity and quality of food-grade corn germplasm utilized in commercial hybrids. A pproach: C ontinue long-term selection in MoSCSSS by using the rind penetrometer as an alternative to selection by using stalk crushing strength. Evaluate a device to measure green-snapping and relate this to rind penetrometer resistance. Evaluate modified-vertical-root-pulling resistance with a clamp to select directly for standability, and evaluate correlated agronomic responses. Evaluate effects of selection for rind penetrometer resistance on host-plant resistance to the European corn borer. Continue improvement of 3 popcorn x dent corn populations for standability, ECB resistance (cooperative with entomologists), and popping expansion volume. Determine whether quantitative trait loci for rind penetrometer resistance identified with RFLP technology are also involved in stalk strength that was improved by selection for stalk crushing strength.

Rather, scholarly research oriented information sources are selected and a brief description of each site provided. A diverse strategy was employed to create this guide. Broad subject catalogs such as those provided by INFOMINE and the WWW Virtual Library were browsed, and several Internet search engines were used to determine the initial group of sites for inclusion. Additionally, several listservs, as well as a number of print sources, were consulted to find relevant sites. This Webliography facilitates access to many important plant genetics resources on the Internet. While the amount of information is vast, the most valuable resource provided herein is the connection to people. The community of researchers, librarians, database managers, and authors is the greatest treasure to be found on the Internet. These people provide guidance, help, and direction to and through the ocean of information currently available on this topic. They are collaborative partners working toward advanced understanding of plant genetics and, ultimately, a better standard of living for many people around the world.

This group includes mosses, liverworts and hornworts. There is always an alternation of generations between morphologically distinct sporophyte and gametophyte.
