Product Description
Defining the fundamentals of building a risk management plan, Applied Risk Management in Agriculture uses strategic management to organize the process of risk management. A time-tested procedure inside and outside the business community, this technique provides an ideal platform for organizing risk.

Making complex principles easily accessible to studentswithout compromising the rigor needed to manage risks capably, this textbook presents 10 easy-to-follow steps and a strategic framework to organize and develop a relevant and practical risk management plan. These steps fall neatly into three traditional stages of strategic risk management, and the practical, formulaic framework accommodates a breadth of information. The text covers strategic, operational, and tactical needs; decision-making processes; and the prediction and probability of outcomes. It is supported by a website that is designed to help students learn and apply the 10 risk management steps. The site provides pedagogical tools for instructors and keeps the text up to date.

The editor and contributors also discuss a more traditional view of risk management, making this a complete system for managing risks that can be used to create realistic applications in an educational setting. With this information, students can build complex risk management plans using the innovative Risk Navigator SRM program, supplement this framework with traditional tools, and then move on to customizing complicated problems with advanced tools when ready. ... Description:
The paper reports the first results of the Project WADI (Sustainability of European Irrigated Agriculture under Water Directive and Agenda 2000), funded under the 5th Framework Programme of the European Union (EU). The objective of the project is to evaluate the economic, social and environmental sustainability of European irrigated farming under different scenarios concerning water policy and the Common Agricultural Policy. The methodology relies on scenario analysis combined with farm level mathematical programming models. Two pilot case studies are presented for Italy: cereal farming and fruit farming. According to the first results, the impact of the directive, up to reasonable prices, may be summed up in a minor reduction of water use associated with a sharp decrease of farm income and a significant reduction of employment. Nevertheless, different farming systems may react in very different ways. More detailed local analyses are needed in order to support the design of effective and efficient policies at basin level. ... Read more

Product Description
Presenting the most recent findings by internationally recognized researchers in the field, this timely book provides an in-depth treatment of modern applications of modeling and simulation in crops, livestock, forage/livestock systems, and field operations;discussing modeling methodologies from linear programming and neural networks to expert or decision support systems as well as featuring agricultural models, such as CROPGRO, GOSSYM/COMAX, GRAZE, and SIMHERD.Includes excellent coverage on evaporation and evapotranspiration, the theory of methods of simulation based on biological processes, and deficit irrigation scheduling!Containing current information facilitating the development of new models, Agricultural Systems Modeling and Simulation introduces Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) - improving organization in the development of large models emphasizes the human/computer interface - identifying users' needs in the design and modeling process integrates Geographic Information Systems technology with time-based simulation - addressing data-handling problems where system results reflect spatial and temporal variations examines livestock systems grazing on forage as well as held in confinement systems - reviewing crop and animal growth simulation based on the amount and value of forage consumed covers machinery selection, capacities, and costs - describing a program that computes costs and timeliness losses due to inadequate equipment capabilities studies the major crop simulation models CROPGRO and GOSSYM/COMAX;delineating and flow diagramming these process-based models reveals in two chapters the use of expert systems integrated with crop models and more! Complemented with references, tables, equations, and drawings, including parts of code listings and flow diagrams, this practical volume is a valuable resource for agricultural, biological, and environmental engineers; agricultural systems modeling researchers; agronomists; entomologists; animal scientists; agricultural economists; and graduate-level students in these disciplines. ... Product Description
Evolutionary Algorithms and Agricultural Systems dealswith the practical application of evolutionary algorithms to the studyand management of agricultural systems. The rationale of systemsresearch methodology is introduced, and examples listed of real-worldapplications. It is the integration of these agricultural systemsmodels with optimization techniques, primarily genetic algorithms, which forms the focus of this book. The advantages are outlined, withexamples of agricultural models ranging from national andindustry-wide studies down to the within-farm scale. The potentialproblems of this approach are also discussed, along with practicalmethods of resolving these problems. Agricultural applications using alternate optimization techniques(gradient and direct-search methods, simulated annealing andquenching, and the tabu search strategy) are also listed anddiscussed. The particular problems and methodologies of thesealgorithms, including advantageous features that may benefit a hybridapproach or be usefully incorporated into evolutionary algorithms, areoutlined. From consideration of this and the published examples, it isconcluded that evolutionary algorithms are the superior method for thepractical optimization of models of agricultural and natural systems.General recommendations on robust options and parameter settings forevolutionary algorithms are given for use in future studies. Evolutionary Algorithms and Agricultural Systems will proveuseful to practitioners and researchers applying these methods to theoptimization of agricultural or natural systems, and would also besuited as a text for systems management, applied modeling, oroperations research. ...
