Editorial Review

Product Description
In many tropical areas the main constraint to increased output of livestock products is the inability of producers to feed animals adequately throughout the year. Yet opportunities exist to enhance ruminant livestock feed supplies by using crop residues, such as cereal straw and legume haulms. Greater emphasis is therefore now being placed on vegetative production in plant breeding research. Crop residues also play an important role in conserving soil moisture, preventing erosion and providing products such as fuel or thatch for smallholders. This book provides a multi-disciplinary perspective on crop residues, bringing together crop, animal and social scientists from six continents. It has been developed from papers presented at a workshop held in April 1996 at ICRISAT Asia Center, as part of the Systemwide Livestock Program of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) convened by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), based in Africa. It will appeal to a wide readership in disciplines as diverse as agronomy, soil science, plant breeding, animal nutrition and socio-economics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A bible for university students of forestry
It is a very complete book with good explanations. However, it is written with very specialised vocabulary and looks like it has been written for university students. I would not recommend it as your first book on silviculture. ... Read more

Product Description
Integrated Fish Farming (IFF) is a sustainable-agriculture technology practiced widely in Asia and other regions of the world. This integrated technology can offer farmers economic improvements while lessening the adverse environmental impacts of farming. IFF systems typically involve a combination of fish polyculture, integration of agricultural production (livestock and/or crops) with aquaculture, and on-farm waste recycling.Drawing on research presented by experts from around the world at the International Workshop on Integrated Fish Farming, this book provides thorough, detailed and truly interdisciplinary coverage of one of the world's most important approaches to integrated farming systems. Integrated Fish Farming places IFF in a global context, reporting on case studies of successful IFF operations, experiments to enhance IFF performance, bioeconomic survey and modeling analyses, research on farm waste use and pond ecology, socioeconomic elements of IFF extension and adoption, and the bio-technical and economic aspects of adapting IFF to reservoirs, marshlands, rice paddies and marginal habitats. ... Product Description
This book describes the theoretical basis and practical application of 20 diverse silvicultural systems for the benefit of ecologists, land-use managers and other professionals. These systems offer the key to regenerating, tending, and harvesting forests in an era of rapid deforestation and increasing demand for wood as fuel and building material. The approaches described here are being used successfully in widely different parts of the world, from Europe to the tropical rain forests, where reduced forest areas must be carefully managed in order to produce the highest possible sustained yield of timber products compatible with environmental protection and preservation. The systematic presentation and discussion of advantages and disadvantages of each program enables readers to select and apply the program most suitable for their needs. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Agroforestry is a land use system that allows for the concurrent production of trees and agricultural crops from the same piece of land. It has a rich history of development and has been practised in some parts of the world for more than 6,000 years. Much recent research into agroforestry has been carried out in the tropics and within the context of developing nations, where land shortages brought about by the rapid growth in population demand that efficient production systems for both wood and food be developed and enhanced. In temperate zones, the awareness of some of the faults inherent within traditional agricultural systems has led to much increased research and practical activity in the development of sustainable farming systems. Agroforestry can play a leading role in this area, particularly in silvopastoral as well as cropping systems, and in promoting soil conservation. This book explores the development of temperate agroforestry and agroforestry systems, concentrating on those areas within the temperate zones where the greatest advances, adoptions and modifications have taken place: North and South America, China, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. The book is the first text to bring together so many examples of temperate agroforestry and is valuable reading for all those working in this area as researchers, practitioners and policy makers. The book is also of importance to students and teachers of agriculture, ecology, environmental studies and forestry in temperate regions. ... Read more
