5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Textbook
This textbook was an excellent resource for my undergraduate course. It provided excellent practical examples of solving field fertility problems. The quantitative approach was challengingbut I learned more than in many other similary classes.Best textbook on the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressed!
I was really impressed with how fast the item arrived.I was not happy to go to the bookstore and find out that the textbook for class was going to cost me $133 new and $100 used.I went on here and got a brand new book for cheap.I highly recommend this company!

1-0 out of 5 stars This edition has been dumbed down.
This edition is not as advanced or complete as earlier versions. If you did want to explore a the subject more completely you are at a disadvantage with this version, the references to the original work that were at the end of each chapter in previous versions have been removed.

Product Description
This book is unique in providing a comprehensive, up-to-date synthesis of what is known about soil biodiversity and the factors that regulate its distribution, as well as the functional significance of below-ground biodiversity for ecosystem form and function. It describes the vast diversity of biota that live in the soil environment - the most complex habitat on Earth - and discusses the factors that act as determinants of this diversity across different spatial and temporal scales. The Biology of Soil also considers how biotic interactions in soil influence the important soil processes of decomposition and nutrient cycling . It demonstrates how interactions and feedbacks between diverse plant and soil communities act as important drivers of ecosystem form and function. The importance of these relationships for understanding how ecosystems respond to global change phenomena, including climate change, is discussed in depth. Much is still to be learned about the soil biota and their roles in ecosystems, and the author highlights some of the many challenges that face ecologists in the exploration of soil.Richard Bardgett has wide experience in soil and terrestrial ecology, and his background of research in many ecosystems is reflected in this book which is the most comprehensive, up-to-date volume currently available in soil ecology. It provides an introduction to the biology of soil, and it also discusses the most recent developments in this progressive field of ecology. The importance of soil biotic interactions for community and ecosystem ecology is illustrated through the use of numerous examples and case studies. The Biology of Soil provides an excellent, easy to read introduction for anyone working in the field of soil ecology and related disciplines, and will be ideal for students taking undergraduate and postgraduate courses in soil ecology, plant-soil relationships, ecosystem ecology, and land management. ... The Soil Survey Manual provides in a single volume the major principles and practices needed for making and using soil surveys and for assembling and using data related to them. The Manual is intended primarily for use by soil scientists engaged in the classification and mapping of soils and in the interpretation of soil surveys. It is oriented to the needs of those actively engaged in preparing soil surveys for publication. The Manual is universally useful and is the primary reference on principles and technical detail for local, State and Federal contributions to authorized soil surveys. Soil scientists concerned with soil surveys in other countries have used it as well. Teachers have used it both as a text and as a reference for students. ... Read more

    Description:
The maintenance of soil health and productivity is a central aim of sustainable agriculture. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are soil biota fundamental for soil fertility and plant nutrition, which may be used in the evaluation of the impact of agronomic practices on soil quality. In the present study we evaluated the influence of three different land uses on AMF populations and correlated glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) content with AMF biomass parameters, such as spore density and biovolume. Among the differently managed sites - maize monoculture, grassland and poplar grove - maize soil showed the lowest AMF spore number and GRSP content. The same morphological taxa were found in the three sites, except for one additional morphotype in poplar grove. A good correlation between GRSP and spore biovolume was found, suggesting that GRSP may represent a useful biochemical parameter for the assessment of biological soil fertility in sustainable agriculture. ... Product Description
Soil ecology is the study of interactions between the physio-chemical components of the soil and organisms living within the soil.Humans are highly dependent upon the soil ecosystem, which provides food, fiber, fuel and ecological services, such as the recycling of atmospheric gases. It is therefore important to understand the function and nature of the soil ecosystem in order to predict and mitigate the long term consequences of present day actions. Soil Ecology and Management describes the organisms inhabiting the soil, their functions and interactions and the dimensions of human impact on the activity of soil organisms and soil ecological function. Chapters discuss basic soil characteristics and biogeochemical cycling, key soil flora and fauna, community-level dynamics (soil food webs) and the ecological and pedological functions of soil organisms.Unlike other soil biology and ecology textbooks, the authors also convey a better understanding of how human activities impact upon soil ecology in a section on ecosystem management and its effects on soil biota and provide a unique perspective on the utility of soil organisms. ... Soil Essentials is a practical reference for farmers and land managers covering soil issues commonly encountered at the farm level. Written in a straightforward style, it explains the principles of soil management and the interpretation of soil tests, and how to use this information to address long-term soil and enterprise viability.

This book demonstrates how minerals, trace elements, organic matter, soil organisms and fertilizers affect soil, plant and animal health. It shows how to recognise soil decline, and how to repair soils affected by nutrient imbalances, depleted soil microbiology, soil erosion, compaction, structural decline, soil sodicity and salinity. The major problem soils – sodic soils, light sandy soils, heavy clay soils and acid sulphate soils – are all examined.

With this information, farmers and land managers will be able to consider the costs and financial benefits of good soil management. ... Read more

Non-technical and easy-to-understand, Soil Science and Management, fifth edition teaches the essentials of soils from the perspective of farmers, horticulturalists, environmentalists and other who are concerned about how soils work and how they are used more effectively. An emphasis on management and the sustainable use of soil and water resources makes it especially relevant to these audiences. 3-0 out of 5 stars marked book wrong
When I was looking for this book I was under the impression that this was #5. I would not have purchased this book if I had known it was #2. It was not marked correctly on the page thet I bought it from. I am a student with very limited income and was forced to drop the class because I didn't recieve the correct book and ordering another one would have been to late for my studies. I have bookmarked where I bought this book from and will not buy from there again.

20 to 80 % of the chemicals applied in agriculture are sorbed, fixed, encapsulated or bound in the soil so they are not anymore analytically detectable. This book covers the results of a workshop initiated by the Senate Commission for the Assessment of Chemicals used in Agriculture ofthe Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. It discusses the state of the art and outlines future research priorities.

The topics presented range from methods of determining the nature of the bond, new extraction methods and their role in humic chemistry in general, stimulation of formation of bound residues and their practical relevance, the role of dissolved organic matter on turnover and translocation, bioavailability and uptake of bound residues by plants and soil organisms to ecotoxicological assessment of bound residues in soil/plant system. The results finally lead to a modification of the definition of bound residues.
