Description

Practical Algebra If you studied algebra years ago and now need a refresher course in order to use algebraic principles on the job, or if you’re a student who needs an introduction to the subject, here’s the perfect book for you. Practical Algebra is an easy and fun-to-use workout program that quickly puts you in command of all the basic concepts and tools of algebra. With the aid of practical, real-life examples and applications, you’ll learn:The basic approach and application of algebra to problem solvingThe number system (in a much broader way than you have known it from arithmetic)Monomials and polynomials; factoring algebraic expressions; how to handle algebraic fractions; exponents, roots, and radicals; linear and fractional equationsFunctions and graphs; quadratic equations; inequalities; ratio, proportion, and variation; how to solve word problems, and moreAuthors Peter Selby and Steve Slavin emphasize practical algebra throughout by providing you with techniques for solving problems in a wide range of disciplines—from engineering, biology, chemistry, and the physical sciences, to psychology and even sociology and business administration. Step by step, Practical Algebra shows you how to solve algebraic problems in each of these areas, then allows you to tackle similar problems on your own, at your own pace. Self-tests are provided at the end of each chapter so you can measure your mastery.

The publisher, John Wiley & Sons
With a ``learn-by-doing'' approach, it reviews and teaches elementary and some intermediate algebra. While rigorous enough to be used as a college or high school text, the format is reader friendly, particularly in this Second Edition, and clear enough to be used for self-study in a non-classroom environment. ``Pre-test'' material enables readers to target problem areas quickly and skip areas that are already well understood. Some new material has been added to the Second Edition and redundant read more ... Read more

Description

From Book News, Inc.
Sullivan (Chicago State U.) presents the sixth edition of this college textbook designed for students with little mathematical background and possibly a fear of mathematics, as well as for highly- motivated students who will go on to further their mathematical education. A major change in the sixth edition is that each chapter demonstrates the relevance of mathematics to everyday life by connecting principles from the chapter to a real-life businessMotorola--including a brief description of a situation at the company, interviews at the company, a biographical sketch of an employee, and an employee-designed problem at Motorola and accompanying student exercises. The content and organization of the text have also undergone a number of revisions and additions.Book News, Inc.®, Portland, OR

Description

Reviewed by Cathy Koos Breazeal. Excerpts from California HomeSchooler, April 1999, Vol 7, No 2
I'd learned about Lawrence Hall of Science's FAMILY MATH books. I jumped at the opportunity to review The Middle School Years version. My 10-year-old son has decreed it to be a cool looking book, with fun illustrations throughout. For our first activity, we chose "Ten, Twenty, Thirty," a mental math game using playing cards. As far as my son is concerned, anything that uses playing cards simply cannot be math! I could see the wheels grinding and had the pants beat off me each time we played. If you tire of one version, the authors list variations.

The book is filled with quick, punchy, eye-catching one- and two-page activities. Extensions help expand the activity and spark creativity. Some of the concepts include variables, graphing, price comparison, fractions, and adding decimals.

Ages ten to fourteen are the gateway years to high school and college and are crucial to our children's advanced mathematics education. FAMILY MATH: Middle School Years contains provocative investigations to captivate older students. Together, families unlock the mystery of algebra with entertaining, nonthreatening activities. One favorite activity is called Flowerpots. By creating a garden with beans, squares, triangles, and circles, families practice the algebraic topic of solving simultaneous read more ... Read more
