He is the unquestioned father of England’s rich tradition of satire and remains one of the most original and lively minds in the entire history of British art. Famous for his paintings, Hogarth’s engravings are even more paramount: the imagery from The Harlot’s Progress, Marriage a la Mode, The Four Stages of Cruelty, Gin Lane and a host of others are crucial to an understanding of eighteenth century art and culture. Yet Hogarth’s art stretched beyond his time and his masterful engravings are as relevant to our society as they were to his. William Hogarth Painting the Comic Muse is Hogarth’s only engraved self-portrait. It was first created in 1758 to celebrate the artist’s appointment as Sergeant-Painter to King George II. In its early states, Hogarth depicts himself with a noticeable smile as he works upon a painting of the muse gazing at her comic mask. Reworking the plate in 1764, however, Hogarth altered his expression to one that is much more serious and reflective. Equally important, the muse’s mask has been changed to that of a somewhat demonic looking satyr. At this completed point, Hogarth also adjusted the title to read, “William Hogarth - 1764”.

Along with its companion, Beer Street, Gin Lane addressed a very real problem in mid eighteenth century England the abuse of spirits by the working classes and the poor. In the right foreground an emaciated ballad singer has just passed away. His left hand still clutches his bottle. Even worse, a drunken woman is taking her snuff while her unattended baby falls to his death in front of the Gin Royal Tavern. Behind the wall a man and his dog fight for a bone. Further back, a man pawns his coat and saw and his wife her kitchen utensils for a few more drinks. The sour faced pawn broker is appropriately named, “S. Gripe”. Both his wealthy home and clothes stand in direct contrast to the ruination around. Only pawn brokers, coffin makers and distillers profit in such a society.

Als Kupferstecher drang er erstmals 1726 in das Bewußtsein einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit mit seinen Illustrationen zu Samuel Butlers Roman "Hudibras" Zur selben Zeit entstanden Hogarths erste Gemälde, vornehmlich Gruppenbildnisse und Konversationsstücke wie "A Musical Party" Fitzwilliam Museum , Cambridge Hogarth machte sich als kritischer Chronist englischer Sitten und Gebräuche einen Namen, vor allem mit den Bilderfolgen "A Harlot's Progress" "Das Leben einer Dirne" , 1755 verbrannt), "A Rake's Progress" "Das Leben eines Wüstlings" ) und "Marriage à la mode" (1745). Die Kupferstichversionen dieser Gemälde fanden weite Verbreitung auch außerhalb Englands . Eine von Georg Christoph Lichtenberg kongenial kommentierte Auswahl erschien Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts ( "G. C. Lichtenbergs ausführliche Erklärung der Hogartischen Kupferstiche"
