Pei and Partners, with the exhibition Winslow Homer: Facing Nature. The impetus for the creation of this landmark building was Mr. Payson's gift to the Museum of his collection of works by Winslow Homer (183 6-1910), featuring 13 watercolors and four oils. Along with the remarkable paintings from the Charles Shipman Payson Collection, the exhibition will feature works from the private collection of the William M.B. Berger Charitable Trust including a rare and early Prouts Neck painting. Drawings, wood engravings, oils, and watercolors from other private collections and institutions will also complement the exhibition. Including more than 160 works in all media, this is the most complete exhibition of Homer's paintings since the Whitney Museum of American Art's show of 1973. L ike so many American artists, Winslow Homer had strong New England roots. He was born in Boston, and at the age of six moved with his family to Cambridge. In 1858 his family moved to Belmont, and the following year Homer himself left for New York where he had his studio until 1880. After apprenticeship to a lithographer (1855-57), he began his career as an illustrator for magazines such as 'Harper's Weekly' (1859-67), and specialised in watercolours of outdoor life painted in a naturalistic style which, in their clear outline and firm structure, were opposed to contemporary French Impressionism. He spent two years (1881-83) at Tynemouth, England, and on his return to America continued to depict the sea at Protus Neck, an isolated fishing village on the eastern seaboard, where he spent the rest of his life. His work was highly original, and is often regarded as a reflection of the American pioneering spirit.     Extractions: Winslow Homer, the quintessential American artist By the time he was in his mid-40s, a decade after the end of the Civil War, Winslow Homer was already successful as a painter. His reputation had been firmly established with masterpieces such as Prisoners from the Front (1866), hailed by the New York Evening Post as "a complete summation of the most vital facts of the Civil War," and The Carnival (1877), one of a series in which he documented the lives of the newly freed blacks in Petersburg, Virginia. Yet, from the late 1870s on, Winslow Homer seemed to change in a fundamental way. Some scholars speculate that there was a failed romance that caused his withdrawal from society. In any case, this great painter of the American scene did not lose the edge when it came to the probity and drama of his art. Eventually moving to the coast of Maine, he limited his socializing to occasional trips to town to pick up his mail. In works such as Fox Hunt (1893) and Right and Left (1909), Homer dealt with profound issues of existence, while in his paintings of the pounding surf of the Maine coast he brought nature to center stage. Now, these works and other masterpieces by Winslow Homer are included in a major retrospective that opens at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., on October 15, where it will continue until January 28, 1996. It will then travel to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (February 21 to May 26, 1996), and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (June 20 to September 22, 1996).
