Mediocre Reproductions
I just received this book, which I ordered, sight unseen.I have not read much of the text, as my interest and focus are the paintings themselves.(So, I offer no opinion on the merits of the text.)As for the reproductions of the paintings: they are mediocre reproductions--not horrible but also not very good.The depth of color is simply not there.I am disappointed and wish I had not spent good money for this book. ... To much prose and little color
It's a shame there is only 8 color plates in the whole book.

Eye-opening view of Impressionist experimentor
Well, I lucked onto this one. Best new ideas in months.It's worth reading this book just for the chapter on the influence the emerging craft of Photography had on the Impressionists.After I read it I longed to beable to hash out points with the author, looking at Bazille as a modernisttrying to find "the point of view of painting" as he called it.

It's not a biography, though it tells his story.I guess everyonewonders what Bazille would have become if he'd lived.A major painter ofhis day, a patron of his wild and later famous friends, or both? This bookmakes a powerful case for his painting and his point of view, and advancessome intriguing theories about theatricality, pure art, posing and gaze forphotography and painting of the time.
