Product Description

Ford Madox Brown (1821–1893) is known predominantly for his close association with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and for his masterpiece, The Last of England (1852–55), with its poignant imagery of a young emigrant couple aboard ship taking their last sight of home. Admired by the young Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Brown was introduced by Rossetti to the artists of the PRB, an association that confirmed Brown’s interests in outdoor light effects and led to the glowing palette of his great paintings of the 1850s. His interests embraced decorative design, and in the 1860s he was a founding member of the now famous decorating firm of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co.

This fully illustrated  catalogue provides the first complete coverage of all of Madox Brown’s work (including a section on frame designs contributed by Lynn Roberts). Drawing on the artist’s diary and largely unpublished correspondence with associates and patrons, Mary Bennett provides a fascinating insight into his ideas and practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars work in art

Work (1852-65) is the title and theme of a highly detailed and conceptually ambitious realist painting by the British, nineteenth-century artist Ford Madox Brown. (There are two versions, one in Manchester City Art Gallery and one in Birmingham City Art Gallery). It is concerned with both manual and mental labour, and depicts as heroes a group of labourers - navvies - laying water pipes in Hampstead (the site still exists) observed by two intellectuals - Thomas Carlyle and the Rev. F.D. Maurice - whose philosophies inform the whole composition. The navvies are surrounded by a variety of picturesque characters representing the different occupations and classes of Victorian society.
In seeking to understand the iconography, narratives, symbolism and patronage of Work, the modern viewer is drawn inexorably into the complex world of mid-Victorian Britain, which then included the whole of Ireland, and which was riven by class conflict.
While the content and form of the painting is discussed in detail, and the question of its truth to reality considered, the book is not simply a contribution to the history of art but also to popular culture and social history. It considers the history of Hampstead and water supplies, the Industrial Revolution, images from the popular press, navvies, street traders, the gospel of work propounded by Carlyle, the reformist philosophy of the Christian Socialists, etc. There are parallels with our own day - for example, the issues of work and unemployment, wealth and poverty.
Arguably, Brown's painting is comparable to Gustave Courbet's realist canvases; consequently, it deserves an equivalent art-historical attention and depth of analysis. The book is intended as a significant contribution to the social history of art.
While several magazine articles have been published about Work and there are chapters in existing art-history books, Brown is an undervalued artist and no book-length study has been published about it. A thorough study of the painting and its accompanying scholarship is overdue.
Victorian paintings have become increasingly popular in recent decades; hence, the book should appeal to those who enjoy Victorian art, especially that by the Pre-Raphaelites, plus museum curators, art historians, fine art students, art-history students who are taking modules on subjects like `Realism', and art and public libraries. Because of its socio-historical content, the book should also be of interest to those studying British history and those interested in the history of London and Hampstead.

Bullet points:
The first book-length account of a major nineteenth-century painting - Ford Madox Brown's magnum opus: Work (1852-65).
A thorough study of the form, content, composition, iconography, meanings, characters and ideological message of Work.
An account of the historical and social context, and geographical location, especially that of Victorian London and Hampstead in the 1850s.
A summary of the artist's life, academic training and his political views.
A chronological record of the painting's production process from 1852 to 1865.
Discussion of fine art influences and popular culture sources, and the part played by Brown's northern patrons.
A summary and review of the painting's critical reception in 1865 and more recent scholarly articles about it.
A conclusion that includes twentieth-century paintings and advertisements inspired by Work.
Over 45 illustrations, many in colour.
Detailed notes, references and bibliography.

Product Description
A comprehensive history devoted to the art of Ford Madox Brown (1821-93), in which his paintings establish him as a major figure in the most important new art movement of Victorian England, Pre-Raphaelitism. The book presents an explanation of the development and basic aims of Pre-Raphaelite art as a whole and offers a revealing discussion of the power and importance of the humorous vein and negative spirit that run throughout Brown's work. It also ties Brown's realist approach to British decorative taste at mid-century and redefines his place in the Aesthetic Movement, a cultural trend that dominated the latter half of the 19th-century. In addition, the artist's socialist leanings and nationalistic tendencies, expressed in depictions of workers, children, women and religious scenes, are set out more fully than in any previous literature on the artist. Bendiner offers various interpretations of Brown's paintings. He connects many of his works to developments in the literature and politics of the time and also explores his role in the Aesthetic Movement and links his social inclinations, plebeian decorative designs, and humorous aesthetic paintings to the overall scheme of his art. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars customers beware...
...and take notice that this book has a total of 352 pages, of which :206 (plus an 18-page introduction) are pure text; 123 are black and white illustrations; and only 8 (eight) color plates, most of well known andwidely reproduced artworks by FMB, such as "work","pretty-baa lambs" and "the last of England". If youare expecting a lavishly illustrated volume, you'll be as disappointed as Iam, thus the low rating I have given. It is my personal opinion, and by nomeans I am judging the essay by Mr. Bendiner, which I have not read; forthis you can read the review below.

5-0 out of 5 stars a subtle and overdue study
F.M. Brown is one of the most fascinating, but neglected, artists of thenineteenth century. A book which takes his art seriously is long overdue. While some of the judgements contained here are arguable, there can be nodoubt that Bendiner has done Brown justice. His comments are always subtle, alert to the ambiguities and complexities of Brown's approach. Bendiner haschosen to organise the book thematically, dividing it into chapters onBrown's 'Archaism', 'Humour', Realism', 'Aestheticism' and 'SocialConscience'. This approach has its problems, especially as the reader hasto piece together Bendiner's thoughts on particular paintings, which may bescattered across the chapters. Sometimes it leads to diffuse commentary onimportant issues. Nevertheless, the approach has the advantage thatBendiner can emphasise the artistic principles of Brown's work overall -very important in Brown's case as critics have too often dismissed his artas 'illustrative'. Perhaps the best points are made in the openingchapters, that on the 'social conscience' can be weak, especially as itattempts to downplay the influence of Carlyle, a writer whose stylisticmethods were very important to Brown - as is now increasingly recognised. The appenices containing Brown's own quirky commentaries on his paintingsis a welcome addition to the text. ... Ford Madox Brown (16 April 1821 – 6 October 1893)was an English painter of moral and historicalsubjects, notable for his distinctively graphic andoften Hogarthian version of the Pre-Raphaelitestyle. Brown was born in Calais and studied art inAntwerp under Egide Charles Gustave Wappers. In 1843he submitted work to the Westminster CartoonCompetition, for compositions to decorate the newPalace of Westminster. He was not successful. Hisearly works were, however, greatly admired by theyoung Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who asked him tobecome his tutor. Through Rossetti, Brown came intocontact with the artists who went on to form the Pre- Raphaelite Brotherhood (PRB). Though closely linkedto them, he was never actually a member of thebrotherhood itself. Nevertheless, he remained closeto Rossetti, with whom he also joined WilliamMorris's design company, Morris, Marshall, Faulkner& Co., in 1861. He was a close friend of thelandscape artist Henry Mark Anthony. Brown was alsothe main organiser of the Hogarth Club, a shortlived replacement for the PRB which existed between1858 and 1861. ... Excerpt: Work (18521865) is a painting by Ford Madox Brown, which is generally considered to be his most important achievement. It attempts to portray, both literally and analytically, the totality of the Victorian social system and the transition from a rural to an urban economy. Brown began the painting in 1852 and completed it in 1865, when he set up a special exhibition to showcase it along with several of his other works. He wrote a detailed catalogue explaining the significance of the picture. The picture depicts a group of so-called "Navvies" digging up the road to build a system of underground tunnels. It is typically assumed that these were part of the extensions of London's sewerage system, which were being undertaken to deal with the threat of typhus and cholera. The workers are in the centre of the painting. On either side of them are individuals who are either unemployed or represent the leisured classes. Behind the workers are two aristocrats on horseback, whose progress along the road has been halted by the excavations. The painting also portrays an election campaign, evidenced by posters and people carrying sandwich boards with the name of the candidate "Bobus". A poster also draws attention to the potential presence of a burglar. Hogarth, Humours of an Election: Chairing the Member. An MP is being carried by his supporters, while a Tory rural labourer and a Whig urban entertainer fight one anotherBrown explained that he had intended to demonstrate that the modern British workman could be as fit a subject for art as the more supposedly picture...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=10391760 ...
