Product Description
Has any other artist left the world such a vast legacy as Michelangelo?Author Philip Wilkinson leads young readers on a journey of discovery through the life and works of the Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, and poet in a visually evocative book.

Wilkinson's lively narrative follows Michelangelo from his early apprenticeship in fresco through his fascination with sculpture, which gave us such masterpieces as the Pieta and David. Readers learn how Michelangelo studied anatomy by cutting up cadavers and of his tortuous struggle to release the human form from raw stone.

With the help of period artwork, quotes, and photographs of artifacts, the book traces Michelangelo's lifelong association with the Medici family and his Vatican patronage through several papacies. His monumental work on the Sistine Chapel ceiling is examined in detail, as is Michelangelo's role as Chief Architect to St. Peter's. Michelangelo's story will enthrall all who are inspired by the search for perfection. ... Read more

Product Description
In seeing printed reproductions as a form of response to Michelangelo's work, Bernadine Barnes focuses on the choices that printmakers and publishers made as they selected which works would be reproduced and how they would be presented to various audiences. Six essays set the reproductions in historical context, and consider the challenges presented by works in various media and with varying degrees of accessibility, while a seventh considers how published verbal descriptions competed with visual reproductions. Rather than concentrating on the intentions of the artist, Barnes treats the prints as important indicators of the use of, and public reaction to, Michelangelo's works. Emphasizing reception and the construction of history, her approach adds to the growing body of scholarship on print culture in the Renaissance. The volume includes a comprehensive checklist organized by the work reproduced. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
In this work, Alexander Perrig proposes a set of objective criteria for determining the authenticity of drawings, thoroughly examines those works that by external evidence are deemed to be by Michaelangelo and reattributes others to four of Michelangelo's entourage. Perrig begins by providing details about his methodology and the new criteria he has established. In the second part of the book he offers a list of genuine Michelangelo drawings, drawings that provide all that is needed to recognize and define the mater's style from youth to old age. In the last part of the book Perrig discusses four groups of drawings generally ascribed to Michelangelo that lack the typical properties of his style, and he links these to four well-known personalities in the master's circle. Perrig's findings were originally published in German in an five-volume work. This books is a summary of the original edition. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Does the Job
As expected of a book in the Time Life family, this provides a good overview for the layman. In simple language it gives you what you need to know with beautiful glossy illustrations.

The style is corporate. It reads as though a committee of editors pruned all personality from the text.Being a 1966 title, when there were still editors who actually edited, this is probably true.

It was just what I needed to bring together the slivers of information on the time that I've acquired from more specialized books.I recommend it for others general readers who need an overview.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the fairest Michelangelo biography
Don't look down it just because it's part of a series form Time-Life books. You can easily find it from different libraries.

I did a 10 page michelangelo paper, mainly focus on his relationship with the papacy and the influense of such relationship.I have read, oh probably 5-6 differentbooks about him and I think this is the best.

The problem with the newerbiography is that there are sooo many Michelangelo bio that the newers oneare busy arguing with them.Robert Coughlan seem to be a genuineMichelangelo fan, which to me is a minimum requirement. There are a lot oftopic like his sexuality, his relationship with his father and all the funwith Leonardo this book has a more compact and clearer description.

Onlything I'm missing the relationship with Savonarola, and how much his ideacompliment Michelangelo's neoplatonic ideal. The later years is lackingthough. The later part of the book totally turn into discussion of hisarchitechtures, which I don't care much about.

The thing aboutMichelangelo is that he has become insanely famous and important when hestillhas 40 years to go.The celebrity really effect how he does hislater works.I don't know if the book discuss much about the quote"My celebrity has ruined my life."Not that I believe thisquote, but I really want to know more about last few years of his life andhow they bury them.I still havn't figure out why they keep ridiculousamount of his letters *contracts* *receipts* and everything. Incredible.
