Product Description
The prototypical Pre-Raphaelite artist, Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) embodied in his art the glamours of Victorian Romantic painting, harking back to an Arthurian Medieval England of chivalry, virtue, Arcadian delight and dreamy sensuality. "I mean by a picture a beautiful, romantic dream of something that never was, never will be," he once wrote, "in a light better than any light that ever shone-in a land no one can define or remember, only desire." Burne-Jones' fantasies of an ideal Albion offered solace against the onset of the Industrial Revolution, which had increasingly come to determine urban life in Victorian Britain, and which his close friend William Morris had also critiqued in his bestselling poetry book The Earthly Paradise (1868). This volume explores Burne-Jones' vision of an "Earthly Paradise" as expressed in painting cycles such as Perseus, Amor and Psyche, St George and Briar Rose, and his wonderful Arthurian tapestry sequences and book illustrations. It also opens up the artist's more practical efforts to secure this earthly paradise through the domestic crafts, rejuvenating the Victorian interior through Medieval precedents: carpets, textiles, stained glass windows, furniture and other Arts and Crafts objects. In emphasizing the conceptual unity of Burne-Jones' painting cycles and domestic designs, this monograph reveals his vision to be a coherent expression and longing for a finer world.Edward Burne-Jones was educated at Exeter College, Oxford, where he met his future collaborators, the artist-poets William Morris and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, under whose influence he left Oxford without graduating. From his first major exhibition in 1877, Burne-Jones was a hit with the English public; his 1884 painting "King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid" remains a classic expression of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood sensibility. After his death in 1898, Burne-Jones' legacy became most apparent in the decorative arts. ... Read more

Product Description
Burne-Jones, the Pre-Raphaelite painter and leader of the Aesthetic Movement is celebrated in this biographical, art and reference title that reproduces many of his works. Born in Birmingham, the son of a craftsman, Burne-Jones showed precocious ability at school. At Oxford University he met William Morris where they established a mutual interest in art. Their first important influence was that of one of the founding fathers of Pre-Raphaelitism, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, with whom in 1857 they painted murals at the Oxford Union. After Oxford his painting career developed and he rapidly established his position as the leader of the Aesthetic Movement. Burne-Jones also worked for Morris's firm, supplying designs for stained glass, tapestries, tiles and other products, including his own illustrations for the celebrated "Kelmscott Chaucer". Travels to Italy while still a student and later in his life exposed him to the influence of Botticelli and other Italian masters. His artistic life was a continual pursuit of beauty, an obsession with battles fought and choices made between good and evil, with chivalry and courtly love, all intricately interwoven with High Victorian ideals.Russell Ash's other books include "The Impressionists and Their Art" and the biographical, art and reference titles "Toulouse Lautrec: The Complete Posters", "Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema" and "James Tissot". ... 5-0 out of 5 stars PreRaphaelite Master
This review is for the more artistic and the less academic. This is a gorgeous oversized book!It contains 40 full color plates as well as a few smaller color and black and white reproductions in the introduction of the book. The colors are exquisite and each of the plates is beautiful enough and of a high enough quality to frame.Burne-Jones is one of my favorites among the PreRaphaelites and he certainly raised the bar with the quality and depth of his artwork.I paid $28.95 and it was well worth every penny.I know that I will look through the book again and again and I have already shared it with several friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medieval Eyes
In death, SIR EDWARD BURNE-JONES became the first artist to have funeral services at Westminster Abbey. In life, he put his Oxford University studies in medieval legend and literature to work in Graham piano decorations, King Arthur theatre sets for the Lyceum, and Theatre of London book illustrations. His first decorative work was a Chaucerean design, and his collaboration with William Morris on the Kelmscott Press Illustrated Chaucer was impressive. "Astrologia" shared his favorite sphere motif with "Days of Creation," "Hope," and such portraits as the "Baronne Deslandes." "Golden Stairs" included his recipe for painting success: musical instruments. "Laus Veneris" had the finest of his tapestry-like surface patterns. "Pan and Psyche" was set in one of his typical landscapes: mysteriously dreamlike, with legendary incidents. "Star of Bethlehem" was a watercolor of his "Adoration of the Magi" tapestry: his original stained glass and tapestry designs tended to show up later in paintings. "Temperantia" pioneered his hallmark elaborately folded and wrinkled draperies. But his art also found lighter moments in caricatures and comic sketches, such as his illustrated "Letters to Kate," daughter of lawyer friend George Lewis. Russell Ash's beautifully illustrated, well-written book makes good 19th-century reading with Timothy Hilton's THE PRE-RAPHAELITES, Lionel Lambourne's VICTORIAN PAINTING, Julian Treuherz's VICTORIAN PAINTING, and Malcolm Warner's THE VICTORIANS. ... The book was cheaply priced which was a bonus but the prints of the drawings were not very good, they were dark.On the cover they took it upon themselves to lighten up the image but when you look at the image inside the book it is much darker.

Not that the book is an overall bust. The drawings of the faces at the end of the book are exquisite, fluid and really show the best of what Burne-Jones has to offer and the large format lets you enjoy the line work and delicate shading.

Not bad but not awesome. ... Read more

Product Description
More than most, Burne-Jones has suffered from lack of exposure. Many prejudices have arisen against him since the period of his popularity in the late nineteenth century. In this book, the reader is given an opportunity to reassess this comparatively little-known personality and to see the range of his art.He was not just a pupil of Rossetti, nor just a painter of palely loitering knights and wan sexless girls: he was a discoverer of the depth of the imagination, and he utilised his anguish to create an art of dramatic tensions. ... Product Description
Published to accompany an American exhibition of the work of the Victorian painter Edward Burne-Jones, this volume covers his whole career, not only the Pre-Raphaelite period for which he is best known. Burne-Jones created a style of romantic symbolism that had wide-reaching influence on British and European art. He was also an important force in the Arts and Crafts movement, producing with his friend, William Morris, decorative art ranging from ceramic tiles and stained glass to tapestries and illustrated books for Morris's renowned Kelmscott Press. The book reproduces all aspects of Burne-Jones's diverse and prodigious output. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pre-Raphaelite Splendor
As I only had about 30 minutes to view this exhibit at the Met (I know - it's absurd), I am delighted to have this beautiful catalog to examine in close detail. The reproductions are indeed stunning, and the text, althoughvery detailed, is quite readable. A treasure for art lovers, especiallyfans of the Pre-Raphaelite style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Here's asumptuous feast of color and fantasy
This is a real eye opener of a book if you are looking for an in depth retrospective of the artist's body of work! Burne-Jones is at last receiving his fair due of recognition as witnessed by the recent Met showin the Summer of 1998. This book showcases his many merits, including aunerring color and design technique applied to fantastical subjects. Whatmakes the book so irresistible is the wealth of color plates accompanied bydetailed explanations. It also helps that the authors were thoughtfulenough to leave out any stuffy, academic narrative that overburdens thisgenre.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great Book!!
This edition of the catalogue for the Metropolitain Museum of Art'srecent(and sadly closed) exhibit belongs on every art library's list of" must buys." What a wealth of information and imagery, allpresented in generous counterbalance in splendid color throughout. Buythis!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A magnificent book for a magnificent exhibition
To visit the Burne-Jones exhibition at New York's Metropolitain Museum of Art is a thrill beyond describing. It is like being surrounded by old friends of the sort usually found in dreams. The stunning, fully illustrated catalogue that accompanies the show is perhaps the best catalogue I have seen, most notably for its impeccable and stimulating essays, and for its phenominal wealth of color reproductions. This book is a stunner, despite two or three flipped pictures( which I guess could happen to anyone in the rush to get such an involved publication ready in time!) I would advise all bookshops, libraries and Burne-Jones lovers to order this book now for its September release. It is sure to be the most valuable book on its subject for many years to come. ... Product Description

The friendship between William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones began when they met as undergraduates in 1853 and—despite their differences in temperament and in attitudes to political engagement—lasted until Morris’s death in 1896. This friendship was one of the defining features of both their lives, and yet the overlap in their artistic projects has not previously been considered in detail. In this deeply thoughtful book, Caroline Arscott explores particular aspects of the paintings of Burne-Jones and the designs of Morris and concludes that there are close interconnections in theme, allusion, and formal strategy between the works of the two men. She suggests that themes of bodily pain, desire and appetite are central to their vision.  Through careful readings of Burne-Jones’s painting and Morris’s designs for printed wallpapers and textiles, she shows that it is possible to bring together fine art and design in a linked discussion that illuminates the projects of both artists.

5-0 out of 5 stars A remarkable study.
I looked far and wide for an intelligent but readable appraisal of the relationship between these two men, whose intimacy and collective creativity spanned decades. This is it. If someone wants to make a movie from the saga of both repressed and expressed sexuality; shared commitment, passion and vision; not to mention shared business interests, family lives, and divergent political views, then this would be the book to get you started...! ...
