Product Description
Walter Crane (1845-1915) was one of the earliest contributors to children's literature and one of the most influential illustrators in the development of children's colour picture books. Crane began working for Edmund Evans in 19864 producing bright, colourful children's books which revolutionised the type of children's books available. This book 'A Floral Fantasy In An Old English Garden' was originally published in 1899. Many of the earliest children's books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Pook Press are working to republish these classic works in affordable, high quality, colour editions, using the original text and artwork so these works can delight another generation of children. ... Magnificent collection of medieval illustrations and decorations created by famed Victorian-era artist to illustrate a sumptuous limited edition of The Faerie Queene, Edmund Spenser’s 16th-century allegorical epic poem. Over 300 superb images—including full-page plates, headpieces, tailpieces, borders, vignettes and decorative initials—depict dashing knights, lovely maidens, dragons, unicorns, angels, and a host of decorative elements. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Illustrations
Walter Crane is one of the best artists of all time. His vision of the Faerie Queene is beyond compare.I use the illustrations to practice drawing. They are a challenge, but a superb kind of challenge.Whether one is an admirer of the Faerie Queene, or of art itself, this book is not only reasonably priced but well designed packing the maximum number of pictures into the book and making many of the pictures full page size so the reader can really appreciate the detail contained in each illustration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic royalty-free illustrations
This book is part of the Dover Pictorial Archive series. It states: "You may use the designs and illustrations for graphics and crafts applications, free and without special permission, provided that you include no more than ten in the same publication or project. For permission for additional use, please write to Permissions Department, Dover Publications, Inc., 31 East 2nd Street, Mineola, NY 11501. However, republication or reproduction of any illustration by any other graphic service, whether it be in a book or in any other design resource, is strictly prohibited."

The designs are very lyrical and romantic. There are knights in battle, maidens in distress, and classical gods like Neptune/Poseidon. Many of the illustrations have intricate, ornate borders that are as interesting as the main illustrations themselves. Jousting, sailing ships, mythical creatures - if you're looking for chivalrous or courtly drawings to inspire your own art, this is the book for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Illustrations from a storybook for grownups
Wonderful illustrations from a work of romance, chivalry, and adventure, with classical mythology tossed in.I believe the only pieces not included from the six-volume original are the double-page title spread and the cover design featuring Una and the lion (used when the work-in-progress was being issued in parts a few cantos at a time, but also bound into some finished copies)."The Faerie Queene" is like an alternate version of the Arthurian Legends--the same type of stories, but not the same stories--with the admixture of other fantasy genres. These other elements mean that there is more nudity here than in illustrations of the actual Round Table stories, in case that matters to you.(When he married, Crane promised he'd no longer depict the female nude from life, but memory seems to have served him quite adequately for this labor of love!) ... Product Description

Walter Crane (1845-1915) was one of the most important, versatile, and radical artists of the 19th century: a painter, decorator, designer, book illustrator, poet, author, teacher, art theorist, and socialist. Crane's astonishingly diverse body of work challenged the establishment, both artistically and politically. In this original and carefully researched new study, Morna O'Neill presents a fascinating portrait of an artist who used his talent and energy to dismantle the traditional boundaries between fine art and decorative art, between elite art and popular art, and between art and propaganda. O'Neill reconsiders Crane's politics and reintegrates it with his art, allowing Crane to emerge in this book as a unique figure, an artist who translated "art for art's sake" into "art for all."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Year Long Parade of Flowers
This beautiful book, so affordable in its paperback edition is the unabridged republication of Flora's Feast: A Masque of Flowers, first published in 1889. It contains 40 color illustrations by the English illustrator and painter Walter Crane (1845-1915). Crane was a leading designer of Art Nouveau textiles and wallpaper and his Art Nouveau stylings are seen in these whimsical and romantic illustrations. Children as well as adults will enjoy this beautiful book which opens with Flora, the Goddess of Flowers waking the flowers from their slumber. "The sullen winter nearly spent, Queen Flora to her garden went, To call the flowers from their long sleep, The year's glad festivals to keep."Attired in Greek-styled drapes, sandals, tunics, and gowns the various flowers, beginning with the earliest crocuses and snowdrops, begin a parade across the pages of this book that proceeds through the seasons from summer through autumn and finally back to winter. Each season's favorite flowers are accompanied by quaint poetic descriptions written by Crane and bear the look of familiar blossoms incorporated into their costumes. We are fortunate indeed to have this rare treat available to us once again. Don't miss it. ... Read more

Product Description
Walter Crane (1845-1915) was an English artist. Born in Liverpool, he was part of the Arts and Crafts movement. He produced paintings, illustrations, children's books, ceramic tiles and other decorative arts. In 1862 his picture The Lady of Shalott was exhibited at the Royal Academy, but the Academy steadily refused his maturer work; and after the opening of the Grosvenor Gallery in 1877 he ceased to send pictures to Burlington House. In 1864 he began to illustrate a series of sixpenny toy-books of nursery rhymes in three colours for Edmund Evans. He was allowed more freedom in a series beginning with The Frog Prince (1874) which showed markedly the influence of Japanese art, and of a long visit to Italy following his marriage in 1871. From the early 1880s, Crane was closely associated with the Socialist movement. He provided the weekly cartoons for the Socialist Organs Justice, The Commonweal and The Clarion. One of his last major works would be his Lunettes at the Royal West of England Academy which were painted in 1913. ... Read more
