5-0 out of 5 stars The worlds of Richard Dadd and Michael Mott
Richard Dadd is probably best known for two things: his enigmatic and hallucinatory fairy paintings and the fact that he murdered his father.

In 'The World of Richard Dadd', Michael Mott reflects upon Dadd, the artist and the son, but intertwines this with thoughts about his own childhood in north London on the eve of the Second World War; a childhood shared by Thom Gunn to whom the book is dedicated.

The strands of the book are skillfully mingled, partly because they share a similar mood where dreamlike memory distilled by time. Mott evokes a childhood where parents are distant exotic beings, usually viewed through the upstairs banisters, where children climb monkey puzzle trees and dress up in their absent parents' clothes.

This is not to say this is a comfortable book. Mott is painfully honest about the patriarchal society in which he was brought up, and its consequences in the wider world - the shadow of war hangs over the book.

All in all, a thought-provoking collection from an accomplished poet, full of allusive and memorable images.

My one criticism is of the reproductions of Dadd's work inside the book - they are murky and hard to discern. ... Read more

Excerpt: James Hanratty (4 October 1936, Bromley, Kent 4 April 1962, Bedford Prison, Bedford) was the seventh-to-last person in Britain to be hanged for murder after being convicted of carrying out the 1961 "A6 murder" committed on the main path at Maulden Wood. The guilt of the later convicts was never in doubt, but Hanratty's guilt has been disputed. Hanratty, a professional car thief, was convicted of the murder of Michael Gregsten at Deadman's Hill on the A6, near the village of Clophill, Bedfordshire, England, on 23 August 1961. Gregsten's companion Valerie Storie had been raped and shot. She survived but was paralysed by her injuries. Charges on these additional crimes were kept in reserve. The case for Hanratty's innocence was pursued by his family as well as by some of the opponents of capital punishment in the United Kingdom, who maintained that Hanratty was innocent and sought to draw attention to evidence that would cast doubt on the validity of his conviction. However, following an appeal by his family, modern testing of DNA from his exhumed corpse and members of his family convinced Court of Appeal judges in 2002 that his guilt was proved "beyond doubt". Paul Foot and some other campaigners continued to believe in Hanratty's innocence and argued that the DNA evidence could have been contaminated, noting that the small DNA samples from items of clothing, kept in a police laboratory for over 40 years "in conditions that do not satisfy modern evidential standards", had had to be subjected to very new amplification techniques in order to yield any genetic profile. However, no DNA other than...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1686904 ... Read more

The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke, 1855-1864 by Richard Dadd (English, 1817-1886). Published by Pomegranate with the Tate Collection.

The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke is the best-known painting by English artist Richard Dadd (1817-1886), many of whose paintings reflect his interest in supernatural subjects, especially fairies. A promising artist at an early age, he began studies at the Royal Academy Schools in London at the age of twenty. Within five years, however, he began to display signs of insanity and soon afterward was confined to a mental hospital. Dadd created The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke while at Bethlem Hospital, the first of two institutions where he spent the last forty-four years of his life. The painting, drawn from his imagination, shows the 'fairy-feller' about to crack open a large chestnut to be used in the construction of Queen Mab's new fairy carriage. Dadd's masterpiece is housed in the Tate in the United Kingdom.

Thoughtfully conceived and engagingly intricate, Pomegranate's 1,000-piece interlocking jigsaw puzzles combine superb color reproduction, stunning and unusual images, and sturdy construction to delight generations of novice and veteran puzzleworkers. Puzzle size: 20 x 27 in. Box size: 10 x 13 x 1 7/8 in. (WARNING: Choking hazard: small parts. Not suitable for children under 3 years.) ... Read more

Excerpt: Henry Joseph Darger, Jr. (April 12(?), 1892April 13, 1973) was a reclusive American writer and artist who worked as a custodian in Chicago, Illinois. He has become famous for his posthumously discovered 15,145-page, single-spaced fantasy manuscript called The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinnian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion, along with several hundred drawings and watercolor paintings illustrating the story. Darger's work has become one of the most celebrated examples of outsider art. Darger was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1892. While he is believed to have been born on April 12, the exact date is debated. A record exists of his U.S. draft registration card, filled out on June 2, 1917 during the First World War, which lists his birth date as April 17, 1892. Cook County records show that he was born at his home, located at 350 W. 24th Street in Chicago. When he was four years old, his mother, Rosa Fullman, died after having given birth to a daughter, who was given up for ad...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=466610 ... Read more

Product Description
The most brilliant young artist of his generation, Richard Dadd (1817-1876) made his name with a sequence of minutely executed fairy paintings of huge imaginative power. Following a long tour of the Middle East in the early 1840s he succumbed to a 'schizophrenic' illness, murdered his father, fled to France where he attacked another traveller, was apprehended by police and confessed to his crime. On his return to England he was sent to Bethlem Hospital where he remained until he was transferred to the new Broadmoor Hospital for the criminally insane in 1864, where he died. Dadd spent over forty years in Britain's most famous lunatic asylums, never ceasing to work as an artist. Dadd is still best-known for his endlessly mesmerising masterpiece, "The Fairy Feller's Masterstroke" (Tate), which was immensely popular in the 1960s and 70s and was even the subject of a hit song by the rock band Queen. The story of the rediscovery of his greatest watercolour, "The Artist's Halt in the Desert" (British Museum), on the television programme "The Antiques Roadshow" has also more recently entered popular culture.Interpretations of Dadd's art have been much coloured by Romantic notions of creativity and madness, enthusiasts for Outsider Art, the ideas of Michel Foucault and of the anti-psychiatry movement of the 1960s and 70s. In the first fully illustrated account of Dadd's life and career, the author examines Dadd's artistic legacy and uses his life as a case history to investigate the relationship between art and the treatment of mental illness in the 19th century. In doing so he overturns many myths. Dadd's jailers often acted as patrons, encouraging him to carry on making art and, in his final years in Broadmoor, commissioning him to decorate stage scenery and murals. Tromans traces the critical response to Dadd's work, both during his lifetime and after his death. With the public appetite for Dadd's bewitching art never higher, this long-overdue, eminently readable reassessment provides a vivid account of one of the most fascinating artists of the Victorian era as well as extensive insight into the difficult relationship between art and madness' in nineteenth-century Europe. ...
