Product Description
Salvador Dali was one of the most famous artists of the 20th century - and also one of its greatest eccentrics. Renowned for his striking and provocative work, as well as his unconventional behaviour, he attracted admiration and controversy in equal measure. This stunning volume showcases more than 90 of Dali's most famous works in magnificent giant size. Arranged chronologically to reflect Dali's artistic development from ambitious young painter to reclusive artist, the images include the sensational Persistence of Memory; the finely detailed Metamorphosis of Narcissus; and his later works, such as the arresting image of Christ of St John of the Cross and The Hallucinogenic Toreador. Here too are numerous depictions of his muse and wife, Gala; and his most well-known sculptures, including Lobster Telephone and Retrospective Bust of a Woman; as well as evocative black-and-white photographs of the artist throughout his life. Accompanying the images is art historian Rachel Barnes's lively and entertaining account of Dali's life and artistic style and techniques, shedding light on the artist's influences and inspirations.Ideal for Dali enthusiasts and art lovers, these spectacular giant-size reproductions and insightful commentary reveal the extraordinary life and works of this gifted, controversial and inimitable artist. ... Product Description
My Secret Life, reveals a daily Dali, with an extraordinary authenticity, a kind of portrait of Dali naked, covered with great delight in the mirror before which hes standing. But what is obvious is that Dali not only loves his reflection: in him, and far beyond his own image, are the big questions that agitated the mind of genius that he never doubted he was. As hes not afraid of the words, he plays with them with pleasure, tainted them with an irresistible humor. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dali on Dali
That's the only subject that Dali ever seemed to discuss. I know that this short volume is supposedly about modern art, and even mentions a few other artists. Really, though, this is by Dali and about Dali.

He was a consistent man. His art was finely crafted, but gave new definitions for the surreal and the impossible. His writing has the same character. He often spoke in a private vocabulary that, perhaps, only he understood. Even in English translation, his sentences have a rolling sound, and some roll on for half a page or more.

In spite of himself, Dali sometimes let an intelligible thought come through. He had the highest regard for Vermeer and Raphael, and the lowest for Picasso. That last is uncertain, though. He may have seen Picasso as the hero who opened the way for a new rise of modern art by first dragging it to the lowest depths.

This is not Dali's only writing, and not his longest or most focussed. Oddly, Gala (his wife and muse) is mentioned only in some of the calligraphic scrawls that adorn the page. Other of his writings are more revealing and more explicitly autobiographic. Still, this brief book is an interesting look at one of more fascinating minds of the twentieth century.

Best of all, this is Dali. It's not by someone else, about Dali. It is Dali.

Product Description
The Collected Writings of Salvador Dalí is the first comprehensive collection of Dalí's shorter writings to appear in English. The volume includes almost all of his writings published in the 1920s and 1930s, most of which appear in this book for the first time in an English translation. It also offers a substantial selection of the shorter pieces published in the 1940s and later, including excerpts from some of his book-length publications. The texts are accompanied by extensive commentaries and annotations which serve to illuminate the rich intellectual background and the broad range of references brought by Dalí to his writings.Amazon.com Review
In both his art and his life, Salvador Dalí alwayscourted controversy. Undoubtedly one of the most technically gifted ofall the surrealist painters, Dalí was condemned for both hisincreasingly commercial output from the 1930s onward and hispolitically naive support for the Franco regime. More recently,Dalí's life and work have undergone something of areassessment, nowhere more so than in Ian Gibson's magnificentbiography The ShamefulLife of Salvador Dalí. Coming hard on the heels of thatwork, this book, edited by Haim Finkelstein, adds yet anotherfascinating dimension to our understanding of this charismatic yetoften repulsive enigma of Spanish painting.

Finkelstein's collection is the first comprehensive Englishtranslation of Dalí's writing from the late 1920s to the early1970s. As he points out in his introduction, writing was in fact avital dimension of Dalí's artistic identity, which is reflectedin some truly weird, wonderful, and poetic essays from the 1920s onphotography, jazz, and film, including the original shooting script ofUn ChienAndalou. What comes across in these early writings isDalí's enthusiasm for a popular culture that many presumed heregarded with contempt. However, Dalí's intellectual petulanceand arrogance are never far away in this collection, and despite theinterest of his flirtation with Freud in his "paranoiac-criticalwritings," the collection soon finds Dalí on all-too-familiarground: posturing, conservative, and intellectuallysuperficial. Although the writings shed little further light on whyDalí became such a cynical conservative in later life and art,it is interesting to watch how the loss of intellectual curiosity inhis prose is reflected in the loss of artistic innovation in hispaintings. The Collected Writings of Salvador Dalí is afascinating book, a major event, and required reading for Dalíaficionados--and anyone intrigued by one of the flawed geniuses of20th-century painting. --Jerry Brotton ... Very nice book! Elegant presentation. This version is easy to understand because it provides many footnotes that guide modern readers to the culture of Spain in the 1500's. I'm having a great time reading it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Don Quijote. 400th Anniversary - Dalí. 100th Anniversary
A great combination is this new release of Don Quijote de la Mancha with 38 illustrations dated 1945 by Salvador Dalí. This book was originally published in the US by Double Day in 1946. There was a special edition by the Argentinian publisher EMECE in 1957 and reprinted in Argentina in 1965. In 1979, the US publisher made a new reprint. The Gala Salvador Dalí Foundation made a special facsimile edition with 43 illustrations (5 new sketches that have only been published in the catalog of the Museu Teatre Dalí). It was a limited edition (unrepeatable) of only 998 copies of 370mm x 370mm. It started at 4,500€ and it seems that it costs now about 8,000€. Editorial Planeta published a new edition, in a smaller size, but perfectly bounded with hard slip cover that you are going to like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dali on the Beach
On a recent family visit I had the great fortune to visit the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. This excellent book cataloguing the museum's collection then makes for a very nice souvenir, of course--but it easily stands outside of this immediate context as a fine art book in its own right.

The main feature of the book is definitely the 94 large, carefully reproduced color illustrations of Dali's paintings held by the museum. These range from some of his earliest works in the late 1910's to his large scale masterpiece "The Hallucinogenic Toreador" of 1969. I had never seen the earlier works before, and these show some of his first halting steps and experiments as an aspiring artist and the gradual evolution of his distinctive style. Among all 94 illustrations there is a good mix of famous classics you've seen a million times and lesser known gems that are equally intriguing. And each illustration comes with a commentary by Robert Lubar that clarifies the painting, its significance and symbolism, and its context and place within Dali's artistic development over the years with great eloquence without explaining the picture away.

Lubar's Introduction (with 9 interesting black & white illustrations) makes for a nice, brief overview of the artist's life and career, and the Biographical Chronology in the back includes several photographs of Dali through the years (including him with the founders of the museum). There are other useful tidbits too for the serious art historian and Dali specialist.

In short, even if you haven't been to the Dali Museum, this is an excellent coffee-table book of weird, whimsical, and wondrous surreal art by one of the twentieth century's greatest and most eccentric artists.

5-0 out of 5 stars detailed informative book on the genius of art
i bought this book at the amazing salvador dali museum in st.petersburgh florida which i strongly recommend in itself.this the book of some of salvador dali's works on display at the museum is a detailed look into the life of the man and the myth. with each work is a detailed explanation describing their meanings and what dali was up to during the time of their production.i am grateful for having read this book as dali is my all-time favorite artist.with this book i've learned more about him and his works' meanings,in which i'm sure all of us have taken for granted.i knew that alot of dali's work is based upon sexuality but never knew before how freudian it all really is.the book explains dali's deep fascination with sigmund freud's writings and beliefs and they come out within his work.if you've never experienced THE man before and appreciate art than this is a good source.if you have the chance visit the salvador dali museum in st.pete,fl.with any look they will be showing the brilliant short film that dali made with another brilliant mind luis bunuel called,"Un Chien Andalou."

4-0 out of 5 stars Delightfully Dali
If you have any space left on your coffee-table, this is the perfect art book for you! Rarely do you ever find a more complete presentation of Dali's works, both popular and private, in a single volume. This collection presents both the whimsy and the nightmares that are characteristic of his work, giving an accurate depiction of his range. If you thought Dali was just another haunted artist, the paintings in this book will reveal his gift for humor as well.Filled with insightful comments by Lubar, this book is a great compilation for anyone interested in Dali. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I Think I'm In Love...
This is an incredible, weird book that every artist should read! Dali has a beautiful, lyrical writings style that's filled with humor. He teaches you all kinds of strange things to do to improve your painting technique, from what kind of pets to keep in your studio (spiders) to how deal with not having the crutch of a grid system when drawing from the model (use actual crutches).

I'm not sure whether he's totally serious about all of this or if his tongue is in cheek, but all of it is highly entertaining. Many of the colors and materials that he writes about are no longer made or difficult to find, but it's still worth reading just for entertainment purposes. His drawing and much of the painting advice is solid, and there is truth in all 50 of his secrets, no matter how outlandish they may seem. His drawing and much of the painting advice is solid. A true love of life, beauty and art shines through on every single page, a joy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dalí, His mind as a beautiful crazy horse
This is one of the books every painter should have!
He explains a lot of interesting things about his technique, materials that should be used and that should not, brushes, paints, oils, mediums, siccatives, etc., etc. rules that should be observed and so on ...

Besides, enjoy his mind, is a Crazy Horse!
Besides, the book is very cheap! (there are a lot of expensive books that mean nothing)

If you are a painter, repeat after me : I will have it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally Far Out and Awesome!
This book is magical. So much great information and insight into Dali's demented head. LOVE IT!

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of information and entertainment
It's been a while since I read this book, but I remember it being hilarious in some parts, and very informative in others. Dali discusses painting techniques, color selection, tools, etc., but also explains things like optimal sleep patterns and other eccentric Dali-esque rules.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Surreal After All These Years
An excellent guide to the development of creative inspiration, whether you are an artist or a writer or a musician. Dali writes with great humor and modesty--just don't take everything he writes literally! The drawings alone make this book a worthwhile addition to anyone's library. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A collector must have
As a collector of Dali prints, this is an important book to reference. However, there are numerous mistakes.Make sure that you get a copy of the erata sheet for the corrections.

3-0 out of 5 stars Official catalog is inaccurate, incomplete, and poorly done.
This catalog is filled with many errors, prints that are upside-down, discolored, shot on an angle, too dark, incorrectly-named, overly-cropped, and low-resolution.For the money this catalog costs, I expected a masterpiece. What I got is far from that. It's great to have all of these images in one place; it would cost far more to assemble these images via dozens of publications, art guides, and catalogs (if at all possible). But the quality of this "official catalog" is almost criminal, and certainly would not pass muster by the discerning taste of Dali himself. In addition, what is not clear prior to purchase is that this catalog only contains "limited edition" graphic works. This means that you won't find all of those "illustrations" Dali did for many books, magazines, and plays throughout the years. If you own this book, your Dali reference source is far from complete. In short, buy the book if you want specimens of many of Dali's limited edition graphic works (not paintings, book illustrations, etc.) in one place, but don't expect high quality, accuracy, or complete information from this publication. The publishers of this catalog should take lessons from Descharnes and Neret whose "Dali: The Paintings" publication is a masterpiece of accuracy and quality that is 300% bigger than this official catalog and costs 75% less.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes in this book, Prestell's book is better.
This is an interesting book if you are looking for information on forgeries and fakes in Dali art, but I found the 2-volume work by Prestell to be more informative on Dali's authentic lithographs and etchings. Photos of the images are in color, some are mis-labled, some areupside-down.But all in all, as far as documenting fakes and forgeries inDali art, this book is worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Be be sure you have a masterpiece
This catalogue is a must if you are serious about collecting Salvador Dali etchings and lithographs.Extremely education and informative. Suprisingly enough, you can E-mail Albert Fields and he might even autograph a copy for you...he did mine

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book on Salvador Dali's graphic art work
Albert Field, the official archivist of Salvador Dali's art works, has done a remarkable work in cataloguing and providing important vital information as well as little known facts regarding the authentic pieces versus the forgeries. Without a doubt a must-have book for any serious collector of Dali art works. This hardbound book is the most extensive reference book ever printed on Dali's work. It far surpases all the other books in the market, both in its content as well as in its completeness. An excellent buy for any collector or art gallery that is serious about Dali's works! In honor of the 100th anniversary of Spanish Surrealist Salvador Dalí's birth on May 11, 1904, German gallerist Thomas Levy has republished this book Da Da Dalí, first published in 1966 and until this reprint virtually impossible to find. Beautifully reproduced here are the black-and-white photo-collages created by Dalí in 1966, using pictures taken by Hamburg-based fashion and lifestyle photographer Werner Bokelberg (Dalí's collages were on view May 11-28, 2004, at Thomas Levy gallery in Hamburg). This book project had begun in 1965, when Bokelberg and journalist Walther Hermann Schünemann (who became editor of the original edition) visited Dalí in Spain to do a portrait of the artist for Stern magazine.

Product Description
"Let us agree," Federico García Lorca wrote, "that one of man’s most beautiful postures is that of St. Sebastian."

"In my ‘Saint Sebastian’ I remember you," Salvador Dalí replied to Lorca, referring to an essay he had just written, "and sometime I think he is you."

This lively, often funny exchange offers an unforgettable look at the complex relations between two renowned, highly influential 20th-century artists. Sebastian’s Arrows presents a vibrant collection of their letters, lectures, and mementos, on the centennial of Dalí’s birth.

Written between 1925 and 1936, letters and lectures bring to life a passionate friendship, a thoughtful dialogue on aesthetics, and the constant interaction of poetry and painting. From their student days in the Residencia de Estudiantes, Madrid, where the two waged war on cultural "putrefaction" and joked about the sacred cows of Spanish art,Dalí and García Lorca shared their thoughts on creation, modernity, and the meaning of their own art. In poetic skirmishes, they sharpened and shaped each others’ work. As Lorca defended his verses of absence and elegy and his love of tradition, Dalí argued for "Clarity" and "Holy Objectivity" and, later, for the poetics of collage and the unsettling logic of Surrealism.

Christopher Maurer’s helpful introduction and selection of images and texts (including a lecture previously unavailable in English) offer insight into the lives and works of two iconic artists. It was a "tragic, passionate relationship," Dalí once wrote; a friendship struck by the arrows of Saint Sebastian. ... Read more

Salvador Dali, who was born in Figueras in Catalonia in 1904 and died there 85 years later, was one of the most important of the surrealists. Simultaneously a printer, writer, filmmaker and, above all, a showman, the artist created an enormous wealth of material by means of his versatile talents. With his self-dramatization and skilful establishment of his own personality as a work of art, he was a model for many other 20th-century artists. Descharnes is at least as good and perhaps better. If you are a Dali print collector you are doubtless familiar with the rumors of forgery and fraud surrounding much of Dali's print ouevre. If you are not, the introductory material in this book will help to bring you up to speed.Fortunately, most of the flim flam material is off-set lithography and doesn't actually come within the purview of this book which covers only Etchings and Mixed-Media prints from 1924-1980.In reality, this is the pithy meat of Dali's print work.It is were a collector will find the most expensive and desirable prints and it is also where it showcases Dali's mastery of the drawn line. The format of the book is an introductory discussion of Dali's print-making history and the evolution of his signature and choice of paper.(Interestingly, there is an illuminating discussion of a couple of his most important print editions, especially the 'Chants de Maldoror' that any serious collector must become familiar with). Then there is more than 100 pps of color plates that highlight a lot of his prints, and here is where I lodge my only complaint about the book and which, in my opinion, brings it down a notch. For, the color reproductions at times have a slight, very slight, grainy-fuzzy quality to them which speak of less than stellar Book-plate reproduction values. This is a shock because this is a Prestel publication printed and bound in Germany; other books from this publisher that I own are of extreme high quality.Following the many full page color reproductions is an approximately 130 pps. raissonne with extensive edition information including dates, edition sizes, printers, publishers and media. This is an excellent resource and also a beautiful, well-made art book even with the tiny demerit for less than perfect reproduction values, and a worthwhile purchase for people who collect prints, enjoy prints, and enjoy Dali's work in that order.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent long-overdue resource
Fiebig and several art historians have marvelously identified the art works from which Dali created appropriations. Knowing Dali's intent--incorporating the influence of the original works--helps interpretations enormously. Well worth purchasing.

Product Description
For readers who have little time to spare and are averse to art-world jargon, this series aims to provide an entertaining guide to individual artists and pop culture. Each volume presents an account of the artist's life, personal and professional anecdotes, concise definitions of cultural and social movements that shaped the artist's work, and colour reproductions. This study of Salvador Dali investigates the reasons for his fame and popular appeal, and tells the story behind the drooping watches; the tabloid gossip, the money and the excess; the reputation as genius, fraud, madman, egomaniac; and the mix of religious and sexual imagery.Amazon.com Review
If you've ever doubted that good things come in smallpackages, take a look at the pocket-sized books in the Essentialsseries, which include volumes devoted to Salvador Dali, Vincent VanGogh, Jackson Pollock, and Edward Hopper. It's clear that the book'sdesigners had some fun with the material, both visual andtextural. Key words are italicized for the student reader. Quotationslabeled "sound bytes" are highlighted with strips of color. There arerubrics every few paragraphs, so you can review "What's So Great AboutSalvador Dali" or "Phalluses, Crutches, William Tell: AuthorityFigures," if you're looking for something to toss into a conversationat a gallery opening. The pictures range from one-inch reproductionsof not-so-important images to clear, large details of key works.

Salvador Dali, the Spanish surrealist who died in 1989 after a longperiod of misery, comes off as a truly tortured soul in Robert Goff'ssympathetic text. The book is designed to give a quick dip into thesea of surrealism, and its manic design is perfect for the artisticCliff Notes crowd--smart teens discovering culture, youngprofessionals looking for more than stock quotes in their lives, oreven cognoscenti with gaps in their art history education. But Goffgoes deeper than all of that. He accurately and kindly conveys Dali'sprodigious natural talent, his psychosexual torment, his obsessionwith masturbation, his heterosexual ambivalence, and his profoundattachment to his beloved wife, Gala, described as a shrew and atrollop. In the end, the book succeeds in giving a rounded view of anartist whose surrealist antics sometimes obscured his strangegenius. --Peggy Moorman ... Read more

This is a book for anyone who want to begin to explore the interesting word of Surrealism. The book is informative, clear and greatly written. A great book to have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Biographical Bravo!
The Essential Salvador Dali is exactly what the title stresses; everything that you need to know about the life and times of Dali without all the drab fillings that seem to thrive in recently written biographical referencetitles. The book makes a point of telling the reader the important factsabout Dali's life as well as analyzing some of his more important paintingsand placing in various qoutes and facts to keep the reader interested.Italso gives a clear explanation of the terms that would otherwise beunfamiliar to those who were not exactly surrealist veterans. The bookwill indeed prove itself a worthy resource for study as well as anentertaining tabletop reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Small, Affordable, and Surprisingly Dense with Paintings
If you're looking for an introduction to Dali's works, this is a fine starting point. It features most of his most popular works, and a biography of his life. It's a wonderful teaching tool, and it's also a great gift forthe artistically inclined. If you know a Dali fan, but you are working on abudget, this is the perfect book for you. ... Read more

Product Description

As a very young artist in training at the academy in Madrid, Salvador Dalí worked in two distinct modes—a highly detailed naturalism (under the influence of the “return to order”) and a more avant-garde, cubist-derived style that owed much to Picasso (whom Dalí visited in Paris in 1926). Then, in 1927, the twenty-three-year-old artist, influenced by André Breton’s Surrealist Manifesto of 1924 and the paintings of such artists as Joan Miró and Yves Tanguy, began to move towards Surrealism. In the spring of 1929, to coincide with the shooting of Buñuel’s Un Chien andalou, Dalí organized his first Paris exhibition, thereby gaining acclaim as a full member of the surrealist movement.
This book offers a wealth of new material about Dalí’s formative years as a young artist in Spain and first years in Paris. Fèlix Fanés, one of the most knowledgeable Dalí scholars in the world, transforms perceptions of the artist and shows how the stage was set for the emergence of Dalí’s mature artistic personality. With a fresh and detailed assessment of Dalí’s truly revolutionary work, Fanés reveals the central role of the artist not only in the development of the Surrealist movement but also the course of 20th-century art.
