Dal!, like the Renaissance artists, refused to be restricted to one unique form of expression: to that of painting. He wished to go beyond that point by making new discoveries; by trying out new means of expression; one of which being the creation through the combination of precious stones and noble metals.Dal!'s jewellery designs span almost thirty years until the 1960s. Thirty-seven of the jewels were produced in the New York workshop owned by Goldsmiths Alemany and Ertman. Dal! himself would choose the most appropriate precious stones, not only for their colour and quality but also, for their suitability in order to transmit a certain connotation or a specific atmosphere.Dal!nian symbolism is ever present in one way or another in all of his jewels: the soft watch, the telephone, the mouth and the subject of war among others. Dal!: Jewelspresents the jewels from the Gala-Salvador Dal! Foundation. It features essays on Dal! and his work, as well as concept sketches produced by him before th ... Read more

Fascinated with optical effects and visual perception, Salvador Dali created paintings of gripping intensity and astonishing variety. This book focuses on Dali`s use of such pictorial techniques as distorted perspective, double images, and three-dimensional illusions, as well as photographs and holograms, to explore perception, perspective, and the ways that optical illusion affects our sense of reality. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars History of art
Nice overview: the work of Dali and a specific part of the art of painting i.e. the problem of 2 = 3. Perspicere on a two-dimensional painting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now you see it ...
This opulently illustrated investigation of Salvador Dali's work and thought looks at the mad master's painting from a new angle. (Some would doubtless argue that any angle from which one views his art is likely to be new.) Dawn Ades has assembled a grand tour of Dali's ideas, influences, biography, loves, fears, friendships and experiments, to offer further insight into a complex intelligence. The paintings, sketches and photographs she draws upon are apt and illuminating. Though I once played at being a painter and have read widely about the arts, I amnot an art student and do not speak the language of the cognesceti. Notwithstanding my naivete, I here offer my own angle on modernist art. Twentieth century art can be fairly neatly divided into two piles: pre-Warhol and post-. In the old days the institutions of art were important: acceptance by a School, the right museums, the right collectors and patrons. Within that structure most arttists conformed and a few broke out to dazzle the world. No matter how far visual artists pushed the envelope into abstraction (pointilism, impressionism, cubism, fauvism, surrealism, and so forth) they were grounded in technical excellence. Any of the masters could paint an apple so perfectly that you would want to take a bite. Post-Warhol, which I use not only in reference to the man but to the sea change he rode (easy reproduction, duplication, electronic media -- all following on the heels of photography), everything was turned on its head. The institutions lost control, idea superceded technique, photography devalued representational art, notoriety bumped-off intellect ... even paint was suddenly cheap after Germany lost the Second World War and its dominance of the chemical colorant and plastics industries. Anyone could do art and everyone does. Anyone with an Apple can make a byte. I find the parallel to electronic publishing inescapable. When printing was expensive the institutions controlled access. Publishers and editors controlled the flow and writers had to follow it. Today printing is cheap, both on paper and in pixels, and the institutions have lost much of their sway. The emergent problem in both cases is for the audience. When a few Schools of art, a few publishing houses, a few film studios, even a few TV networks controlled the spigot, what emerged was apt to have some merit. Without that institutional control we face a torrent. Post-Warhol there is a lot more bad art. (If I have herewith condemned the Soupletter, so be it.) Dali's art is a reminder that just being clever and different is not sufficient. You have got to be good to be famous for more than fifteen minutes.

Hallucinagenic Toreador is a painting that can never leave the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, and therefore could not, sadly, be included in the exhibition (and catalogue). Plenty of other double images were though.

3-0 out of 5 stars not what I expected
I have an earlier book from author Ades that had text that was very good. I bought this book thinking Hallucenogenic Torreador would definately be in it- one of his most interesting optical illusions...and it wasn't in there!Pictures are big but I think she could have used more that she didnt. I sent it back as it wasnt worth $40... if it would have been in paperback and cheaper, I would have thought twice. Hope this helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must" for all Salvador Dali fans.
Dali's Optical Illusions is the first to probe Dali's fascination with optical effects and perception, packing in examples of Dali's works and commenting on his sources, inspiration, and methods. Accompanyingdiscussions to each page of illustration comment on technique, inspiration, and visual impact of Deli's images. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating memoires
This is an account of the more than fifteen years Amanda Lear was a close friend of Salvador Dali and his formidable wife Gala. She met him in 1965 when she was an art student and model in Paris and soon became an intimate friend and confidante.

She accompanied him and his wife on trips to Barcelona, Madrid, New York and Paris and spent every summer with Dali at his home in Cadaques in Catalonia. He served as a mentor to her; traveling with him, Lear discovered the great museums of Europe, Parisian salons and restaurants, New York bohemia and his homeland, Spain.

She met lots of interesting people, including Andy Warhol, while she knew people like Faithfull, Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, Keith Richards, Anita Pallenberg and David Bowie from her life in London.

She reveals the real nature of her relationship with Dali, describes his funny ways and the interesting characters around him with humor, and provides great insights into Dali's relationship with Gala. She is remarkably frank about her own sexual exploits and does not avoid the negative in her very honest accounts.

What make the narrative very interesting are the many references to the music, films and art of the late 1960s and the entire decade of the 70s, and her and Dali's many encounters with famous artists. I found Dali's political incorrectness and sense of humor very charming, and received a favorable impression of him, despite his many flaws.

Lear also writes in bits and pieces about her own musical career, but I wish she had elaborated. I was always mystified about why she became a huge star in Europe but never made it in her native UK, while in the US only had some success on the New York and LA disco scenes. She herself refers to her lack of success in the UK thus:

"All the major European cities wanted my show. Only the English remained immune to the effect of Amanda Lear. They preferred rock to disco, and punk was in full swing in England. Dali was fascinated by this new trend, which he pronounced 'pounk.' He always loved anything extreme or revolutionary. Disco music left him cold. "

Well, this is not entirely correct - punk did create an uproar from around 1976 on, but disco dominated the charts in Britain from the mid to the late seventies as it did everywhere else. The book contains lovely black and white photographs of Amanda with Dali of course and also with inter alia John Lennon, Yul Brynner, Brian Eno and David Bowie.

It's a surprisingly moving and insightful autobiographical/biographical exercise and I strongly recommend it to fans and scholars of Dali, the great genius of surrealism. Fans of Amanda will love the book. For those new to Amanda Lear, I recommend the albums Sweet Revenge and The Collection as excellent introductions to her work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Persistence of friendship
This is at once the least informative and the personal favorite among biographies of Salvador Dalí. It's more Lear's personal memoir, covering the years before and beginning her musical career, but especially her friendship with this baffling genius.

That time includes the 60s and 70s, back when hippies still roamed in herds and when sex was safe. Dalí delighted in being the center of attention, and surrounded himself with hangers-on of many stripes. Amanda was an occasional artists' model, occasional lingerie model, occasional jet-setter, and occasional starving artist at the time she fell into his orbit. Among all of those who swung in, then away again, she had remarkable longevity - from the mature peak of his career, until the end of his life.

And what a life. Accompanying Dalí, she partied and did the clubs where she met David Hockney, Yul Brynner, Mapplethorpe, Hepburn, Bardot, Coco Chanel, and an endless stream of rich and famous on two continents. Then, she'd retire to her London flat where she and a room-mate barely covered the rent. She bedded David Bowie, one of the early Rolling Stones, millionaires, bullfighters, fans, and seemingly anyone else with a nice enough smile - though never Dalí. In fact, she became good friends with Gala, Dalí's mate, muse, mother-figure, model, and manager, as well as the central point of Dalí's universe (other than himself). That says a lot because Gala, in her role as gatekeeper between Dalí and reality, was not an easy woman to please.

Most of all, Lear was friend to Dalí, a difficult thing at best. Lear modeled for him, and occasionally acted as living decor when Dalí wanted to impress a guest. She was also companion in many ways. As surreal as his art, that's how surreal Dalí was in himself and in his relationships. I always felt that I was missing part of the story, but Lear seemed to miss it as well - maybe I didn't really miss anything.

It's a very personal story, as much Lear as Dalí and often cut loose from hard dates and places. That's what I like about it. The facts don't matter so much, and I imagine that the glow of nostalgia has at least tinted them. As with Dalí's art, though, literal truth seems secondary to vivid imagery. Lear brings that sense to this charming set of recollections.

Editorial Review

Product Description
A new analysis of the controversial painter's art as viewed through his life and a biography of his life as viewed through his art. Among the many books written on or by Salvador Dali, this is the first to give a complete, well-documented picture of his life and art. Carlos Rojas's approach to Dali is somewhere between biography, Freudian analysis, and art and literary interpretation. Dali is haunted from earliest childhood by the specter of his elder brother who died as a toddler shortly before Dali was conceived (both brothers and the father bore the same name), as he is haunted by the devouring phantom of his mother, that praying mantis on whose portrait he would like to spit. Dali is seen as endlessly struggling to affirm his identity and existence. A combination of genius, madman, neurotic, and spoiled brat, Dali is illuminated by his work, while the known facts of his life, his own writings, those of his sister, and of others, are used to analyze the paintings, which are described in considerable detail. Rojas also provides sustained analyses of Dali's relationships, including his influential amorous and intellectual affair with Federico Garcia Lorca. ... Read more

Product Description
Published to accompany a major exhibition of his work, in Liverpool and St Petersburg, this study presents Salvador Dali's engagement with myth, legend and belief. Focusing mainly on the 1930s and early 1940s, during his involvement with the surrealist movement, it explores his illustration and adaptation of clasical, popular and Catholic narratives, his fascination with stories in collective ownership and his determined appropriation of them for the self-consciously orchestrated story of his own life. The book is edited by the exhibition's selectors. It examines Dali's work with myth from various historical, theoretical and mythological perspectives, with essays by acknowledged scholars including David Lomas, Robert Lubar and Jennifer Mundy. Fully illustrated with paintings, drawings, objects and prints brought together from the collections of the Tate Gallery and the Salvador Dali Museum, and from other major collections (private and public). ...
