Product Description
This volume explores Salvador Dali's work. It focusses on his art up to about 1930, aiming to throw light on Dali, and how greatly his later images, obsessions and attitudes were rooted in his youthful experiences in Catalonia and Spain. The text includes essays by well-known writers on Dali, Surrealism and cultural life in Spain at the time Dali was painting. His upbringing in Figueres and Cadaques, his student years in Madrid, his relationship with the poet Federico Garcia Lorca and his collaboration with the film-maker Bunuel, the critical reception of his work, and his connection to the French Surrealists before 1930 are all discussed. ... Product Description
Salvador Dali was one of the most famous--and one of the most notorious--artists of the twentieth century, recognized as much in the popular imagination for his flamboyant personal style and his penchant for showmanship as for his groundbreaking artworks in many media. Dali & Film investigates, for the first time in depth, the part played by film as a key influence on Dali's art, as well as his extensive involvement in film-based projects. This illuminating volume presents both the major paintings that reflect the artist's famous preoccupation with film and materials related to the key film projects on which he worked.
Throughout his long career, cinema contributed to Dali's understanding of both the power and the uses of illusion. In 1929 and 1930 he collaborated with the influential Spanish Surrealist filmmaker Luis Bunuel on the startling and highly controversial films Un Chien andalou and l'Age d'or. Many years later, Dali worked with the Disney studios in Hollywood and with Alfred Hitchcock, devising a dream sequence for the psychological thriller Spellbound that remains one of the most innovative in cinema. Over the intervening years, Dali came to reject what he saw as the elitism of Modernist film, and embrace instead the popularity of mainstream cinema, recognizing its potential to bring his work to a vast audience. Extensively illustrated with reproductions of paintings, film stills, storyboards and photographs of the artist with figures ranging from studio bosses to the Marx Brothers, Dali & Film reveals the depth and persistence of Dali's fascination with the medium, bringing a new dimension to our understanding of one of the great masters of twentieth-century art. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A really bad book
I just receive it. It is a really bad book, designed in a very old fashion, and focused on paintings and not on his films. I will sell my copy at half price.

Product Description
On canvas and in person--Salvador Dali's weird, captivating and complicated world.

It is hard to tell what is more fascinating: Dali's brilliant, hallucinatory art or the eccentric life he led. This book considers both the works and the man. Dali's penchant for self-promotion; his partnership with his wife and muse, Gala; and his contentious relationship with artists of the Surrealist movement are examined alongside vibrant reproductions of some of the most dazzling paintings of the twentieth century. The book also explores Dali's rich legacy, which includes brilliant works in virtually all forms of media. The result is a true marriage of life and art, and an insightful look into the mysteries of fame and creative genius. ... Read more

Product Description
Julien Levy opened his New York gallery in 1931, and the following year assembled the first Surrealist show ever held in that city. Over the next two decades he exhibited works by Dalí, Ernst, Joseph Cornell, Calder, Eugene Berman, Tchelitchew, Giacometti, Arshile Gorky and many other luminaries of 20th-century art, giving a number of them their first shows. But Levy was more than a gifted dealer: he also had a gift for friendship, and in this charming, anecdotal memoir he recounts his intimate dealings with some of the most innovative figures of his generation. He crossed the Atlantic with Duchamp and introduced Tanguy to New York. He conceived the idea for Dalí's Birth of Venus pavilion at the World's Fair, shared a summer house with Ernst and fished with André Breton (yielding a memorable description of the Surrealist leader's run-in with a blowfish). And he was with Gorky in the final, tragic days before the painter's suicide. Memoir of an Art Gallery is the story of prescient vision and lifelong devotion. By turns humorous and moving, and back in print after many years, it is also one of the most enjoyable works ever written about the pivotal time when Manhattan became the art capital of the world. 4-0 out of 5 stars Fun read, anecdotal during the glory days of surrealism
Fun to read Levy's take on what was going on around him and because of him in New York.A few fun photos as well.Highly recommended if you want to be "inside" that period of time, tho Levy's writing style is sometimes a bit self-important giving me the impression that he wants to be considered an artist in his own right. That said, he played a big part in bringing surrealism to America and as such his perspective is valuable.Enjoy. ... Product Description
From the 1920's to the present, Spanish artist Salvador Dalí has maintained a reputation as the master magician of contemporary art. His alien and nightmarish images stimulate the viewer's imagination with extraordinary power attracting each new generation by the force of his hallucinogenic inspirations.

This publication is a delight and a revelation for aficionados of Dalí and offers new insights into his art and life. For those approaching Dali's work for the first time, it provides a perfect introduction to the cosmos as it is seen and interpreted by this self-proclaimed master of the "Paranoic-Critical."

Dalí's art was and remains controversial. It has infuriated and enchanted both layman and art critic but it remains undeniably memorable. His painting of soft watches is one of the great icons of the twentieth century. Dalí's detractors label him as a money-mad charlatan while his advocates praise him as the greatest painter and draftsman since the days of the Renaissance. Dalí acknowledges and capitalizes on both viewpoints with equanimity.

Dalí's visual language is virtuosic and his range of imagery is protean. There is not one field in the visual arts that he has not explored successfully: painting, sculpture, graphics, book illustration, jewelry design, scenography. He is even acknowledged as an essayist and novelist.

His influence in all areas is staggering and the pages of this book explain his ever-fresh popularity with art lovers of all ages and all tastes. Whether the subject is inspired by Freud or the Bible, alchemy or science, or from Classical mythology or nuclear physics, Dalí's art remains unforgettable. It is mystical. It is erotic. It is inspirational. It is obsessive and evocative.

2-0 out of 5 stars don't buy it unless it's real cheap
Ignacio Gomez is a poet, in this case, acting as art critic. His analyses are quite simplistic, and therefore, the text offers only limited insight into Dali's work.Furthermore, the book offers only a limited number of prints in comparison to other books about Dali. The only redeeming quality of this book is that the printing was done with utmost care, and in contrast to other books i've seen, the reprints of Dali's paintings are extremely close to the originals. ...
