5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Artist Of The 19th Century
Edgar Degas has a special place in my heart. No other artist used as many women as Degas did for subject. He is my favorite Impressionist artist and I regard his art as the finest, most realistic, meaningful and most beautiful of the late 19th century. Degas is most famous for his paintings of ballerinas, but he was a prolific artist and seemed to live only for his art.
When he died, he expressed his final wish: that during his funeral service, speeches must indicate that his greatest love was art and that he should be remembered as a great artist.

That's exactly how we remember him. This book provides a plethora of his paintings, and details about his life. It's very sad that this book is close to becoming out of print. I am honored to be the first to review this book. The cover painting is "L'Etoile" or "The Star on Stage". Degas painted ballerinas in the French opera-theaters in the 1870's. He was influenced by Japenese prints which enabled him to draw harmony and space. He was able to capture the transience of life, fleeting moments, as the ballerinas danced or moved in the stage during a performance. He also painted them during rehearsals and waiting in flocks in the wings. The pastels and oils were vibrant, colorful and made the ballerinas look nearly surreal in their artificial theatrical surrounding scenery. For contrast to the light and bright colors, he included gentlemen in dark suites waiting for the ballerinas backstage or observing them from a distance.

Edgar Degas, a gifted intellectual, had many friends in the art and literary world. Among his friends were the Naturalist writer Emile Zola and the Impressionist artist Edouard Manet. Degas participated in the Impressionist Exhibitions, was part of the movement by all means, although he considered himself a Realist painter of natural movement and contemporary society. He was a modern man in many respects and it was Degas who personally defended and helped Mary Cassat, the feminist and professional artist from America, exhibit with the Impressionists. This was a time when the art world was still very male-dominated. Mary Cassat and Edgar Degas remained good friends for many years.

This book seems to be Edgar Degas life through his paintings. Here, we see everything about him and we discover how unique and interesting he was. He never married, there was never any evidence that he fell in love, and although many accused him of voyeurism and presenting women as objects, this is not true. He loved women and respected them and treated them not only as works of great art but examples of people in motion. Later on, his subjects were prostitutes (albeit veiled by the guise of elegant high-class women in cafes), nightclub singers, and "bathers" as they fussed over their bodies and hair or other bedroom objects. Edgar Degas was incredibly gifted and a fine pro-feminist painter, despite what others might think.

To sum up everything he stood for, Degas himself said his art wasintended to give "truth an illusion of madness". He was a true artist in the very sense of the word. No artist of the 19th century, in France, could compare to his dedication and his intelligence. Viva Edgar Degas! His paintings, originals, are still on display in the Louvre and in the Musee D'Orsay in Paris. A trip there is a pilgrimage to ballet lovers and fans of Degas paintings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
Degas was an artist that tried a variety of media and techniques during his long career. This book explores all aspects of his life and work, also providing quotes by and about the artist. It is very well researched. The reader learns about Degas as painter, sculptor, printer, photographer, and even poet (translations of several sonnets are included). There are many photos of the artist and his work in all media. The result is a vivid portrait of Edgar Degas.

3-0 out of 5 stars EDGAR DEGAS
I THOUGHT THE ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE BOOK TO BE EXCELLENT. THE COLOR RENDITION ARE OF VERY HIGH LEVEL AND I DID REALLY ENJOY THE BOOK FOR THAT REASON. BUT CONCERNING THE TEXT AND ANALYS OF THE PAINTINGS I FIND THEM VERY CONFUSING. THE MENTION OF THE TITLE OF THE PAINTINGS WERE OFTEN WRONG OR I HAD NO IDEA OF WHICH PAINTING THEY WERE REFERING TO. FOR THIS BOOK TO INDICATE THE PAGES OR THE NUMBER OF THE COLOR PLATES WOULD HAVE BEEN EASIER TO UNDERSTAND THE TEXT ANALYSIS.

5-0 out of 5 stars the painter of girl dancers
Degas was obsessed with painting girls naked from behind. No, he wasn't interested in obscene poses, but in drawing the backs and buttocks of women as they washed themselves or slept in bed. He also loved watching pretty girls dancing on stage. And he loved to paint them just as much, in rehearsal and in concert. Painting in the daytime, landscapes from nature in the great outdoors--none of that was for him. In fact, he found it impossible to paint anywhere except in his dim and dusty studio. He painted similar scenes as those of Toulouse-Lautrec, but in his own style. The older Degas treated Lautrec as a sort of disciple, with patronizing benevolence. But unlike Lautrec, he led a quiet, chase life and lived to a ripe old age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Degas
This is a great book for any Degas fan, the color plates are absolutely gorgeous!

2-0 out of 5 stars great artist, less than great book
I love Degas, so don't get me wrong. For a book as big as it is, it's lacking. Way too much text at the expense of Degas wonderful work. It is a big book, why are there so few big reproductions in it. There could be more color images too. This would have been a great book had they made use of the size and done a better layout between text and image, as all books on artist should be. It also seems like they've left out a lot of good stuff the should have had room for. Overall, it just seems like not much thought went into the actual layout of the book.

I don't recommend it as a keeper book on Degas, however if you find a cheap copy, why not, it is Degas afterall and the reproductions do look decent. ... Read more

Edgar Degas the Realist Artist with his contemporaries including, Monet, Renoir, Gauguin, Cesanne, Cassatt, Morrisot, Pissaro and others rebelled from the harshcriticism of the Salon Judges. These artists started their own breakthrough in art called the "Impressionist School."

Mary Cassatt an American Painter living in Paris befriends Edgar Degas and leads us through this story ofa revolution in art involving challenge, rejection, dedication and ultimately world fame.

Artists, writers and intellectuals gather daily to meet in Paris Cafe's to discuss events in Paris in the early 1870s.They have their routine of sitting in the same seats, arguing, joking and drinking beer.Dapper EDOUARD MANET and the talented witty intellectualEDGAR DEGAS are frequently arguing over the merits of displaying their paintings in the Salon.

SALON JURORS decide whether the art is good enough to be accepted or rejected. Both Manet and Degas have successfully had their paintings admitted to the Salon where Manet seeks medals and Degas now questions the competence of the jurors and considers the possibility of breaking away from the Salon entirely.

It was in Parisean Cafes that the Impressionist Group was formed to independently display their art without interference from the jurors. It was agreed that no artist could display their art with the Impressionists Group if they submitted their art to the Salon. Manet prefers to stay with the Salon while Degas is joined by MONET, RENOIR, MORRISOT, CEZANNE, PISSARO and others to organize the First Impressionist Exhibition.

The First Impressionists Exhibition lost money.Edgar Degas is the motivating force in trying to keep this group of artists together. He has to deal with replacing artists who defect by returning to the Salon.

Edgar invites an American artist MARY CASSATT to join the Impressionists in time for the Fourth Exhibition, that was very successful.Mary is overwhelmed to be the first American invited to the Impressionists.

PAUL GAUGUIN eventually joins group as does SISLEY, SEURAT and others. Edgar Degas becomes the mentor for Mary Cassatt whose art improves under Degas' influence. Degas' art commands high prices and was in great demand.Life seems fine until Degas complains about his failing eyesight. The DOCTOR confirms that the deterioration will continue and Degas will eventually go blind. A blind painter?Beethoven wrote music while deaf. Degas continues regardless. If you enjoy art, you will love the book, Absinthe.

A great artist offers every young ballerina an invitation to the dance.

The dance paintings of Edgar Degas are beloved around the world. For the first time, here is a book that reveals the intriguing world of ballet dancers behind the scenes-as shown exclusively through the life and work of Degas.

Observing the young students, called petits rats, Degas discovered that ballet training is much like creating art: it takes hard work and practice. As the "little rats" repeated their steps, Degas drew their poses again and again, for like the ballerinas, he was determined to achieve perfection. More than 30 Degas paintings and drawings capture each step of the journey from little girl to prima ballerina in this absorbing picture-book biography. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Much better than Cem Altinel's review suggests
The copy I saw didn't show evidence of poor color separations, nothing that I could detect at any rate...I especially appreciated the degree of attention paid to Degas' drawings...some publishers seem to think that finished paintings are the only things worth reproducing in color. Next paycheck, I'm buying this one! I also thought that the reviewer's crack about a typically rough American approach was uncalled for (and I'm not an American). Ever hear, for example, of Yale University Press?

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointment
This book has neither fulfilled my expectations on Degas nor provided his most distinguished paintings. The dance theme is not properly supported with the paintings. Additionally the quality of colour separations is very poor. I have also found the page designs unsatisfactory. A typical rough American approach to European Art.

5-0 out of 5 stars A review of the BOOK....
I see the other reviewer has reviewed AMAZON's delivery service and not the actual book... Which is a pity. Because the book is truly gorgeous and an amazing source of knowledge to those who's interested in Degas. It has an incredible amount of picture documentation, as well as tons of interesting written material. It shows in particular how Degas to some extent understood the world of ballet so well he was able to correct the petite ballet rats if they showed an imperfect technique...

It also displays much interesting info about the two old Parisian opera houses Rue Peletier (destroyed in a fire) and Palais Garnier (still existing and in use).

And last, but not least, it shows Degas's various motifs, techiques and ideas. I love this book most of all the arts book I have, and though sligthly expensive I found it to be worth every penny. ... Read more

Product Description

Every girl remembers her first trip to the ballet: the anticipation beforehand, the orchestra's first notes, the ethereal beauty of the ballerinas. This is a tale of one such girl who was caught up in ballet's mesmerizing spell and became one of the greatest ballerinas of all time.

In a story drawn from her memoirs, Anna Pavlova describes her first visit to the ballet to see the Sleeping Beauty. With simple, childlike language, she captures her love for her mother, the splendor of the ballet, and the moments that changed her life. The words are matched with paintings, pastels, and drawings of the French Impressionist Edgar Degas, to give this story all the magic of a fairytale.

Complete with short biographies of Pavlova and Degas, I Dreamed I Was a Ballerina will delight any child with ballerina dreams.Amazon.com Review
A young girl's discovery of ballet is combined with the magic of French Impressionist Edgar Degas's paintings to create a story as delicate and lovely as the ballerina herself. Drawn from the 1922 autobiography of prima ballerina Anna Pavlova, this reminiscence tells of her first trip to the ballet to see Sleeping Beauty with her mother. Her youthful words reflect the sweet wonder of the experience, as well as the gentle love between mother and child. The moment the breathless Pavlova voices her desire to dance on the stage one day, followed by her mother's response that she is "her silly little dear," is made all the more poignant by the reader's knowledge that this particular little girl's dream did come true.

Filled with the enchanting details of the ballet, and perfectly accompanied by the famous ballerina paintings of Degas, this is a book to be treasured by dancers, art lovers, and devotees of ballet alike. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I Dreamed I Was a Ballerina
This book was perfect for my daughter after her first ballet recital. The art is beautiful and it is well written overall.Being a (somewhat) biography added more credibility to the story. The only trouble we had with the book is that the fairy not invited to Sleeping Beauty's christening is called a "hag" so we had some explaining to do when we read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars beautiful book
Beautiful pictures and a nice story...my daughter loves ballet and she really likes this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
A cute story mixed with beautiul artwork. A treasure. I'm gonna pass this on to my future little ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book
I began taking my grandaughter to the ballet when she was 3 years old.By 5, she knew the stories and music to all the classics and began ballet lessons at the Washington Ballet. Now, at 7, during the holiday, she is dancing one of the leading children's roles in Septime Webre's Nutcracker.

I bought this book because I wanted to introduce her to the history of this beautiful art.Not only did she love the story, but, additionally, she was facinated by the Degas images and drawings. We ended up spending more time learning about "Impressionism" than Anna Pavlova. She loved the softness of the images and plied me with questions about the way Degas painted.

Because of that discussion, I bought her an additional book about "The Little Ballerina" statue that Degas fashioned. That led to my descriptions of The Louvre, the copy of the statue in The Metropolitan Museum and a promise that this summer, for her 8th birthday, I would take her to New York to see Swan Lake danced by the American Ballet Theater and the Metropolitan Museum to see the copy of "The Little Ballerina" statue by Degas.

I could never have imagined that this book would be so stimulating. The best part was sharing the story, answering her multiple questions, watching her enthusiasm while I read the story (even though she could have read it herself)and knowing that a child's curiousity was joyously working overtime.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful story

5-0 out of 5 stars Six great articles and many magnificent plates
I was fortunate enough to see this show in London and actually have the article in the Telegraph from Sunday July 26, 1996 that inspired me to see the show. This really beautiful book contains six interesting articles on aspects of the art shown in this event. The first is partly biographical on the last years if the artist's life.I say this because a discussion of the biography must also include some discussion of the art.

The second article discusses Degas' role in the art market in his later years. His current popularity does not give you a proper sense of the complex reactions different portions of the art marketplace and the general population had towards him in his last years.

The third article is a fascinating study of the artist's craft and centers on studies and photographs he used to prepare for his finished and larger works.I remember being very fascinated by the studies while viewing the exhibition.

The fourth article discusses his use of pastels and oils in his later years.Degas was a master colorist and the way he layered his pastels and saturates us with color is still breathtaking. The fifth article discusses his subject matter and how it changed over his last few years.

The sixth article discusses his place in the community of artists and their society in his later years. This is interesting given his reputation as a recluse.

The second half of the book provides full-page plates of the paintings, drawings, sketches, and sculpture in the exhibition. There is also a chronology of his later years, the lenders to the exhibition and a detailed list of items in the exhibition, notes for the articles, and an index.

As fine a book accompanying an exhibition as you will likely find.

Product Description
In Odd Man Out, Carol Armstrong offers an important study of Edgar Degas's work and reputation. Armstrong grapples with contradictory portrayals of Degas as "odd man out" within the modernist canon: he was a realist whom realists rejected; a storyteller in pictures who did not satisfy novelist-critics; a painter of modern life who was not a modernist; a member of the impressionist group who was no impressionist. Armstrong confronts these and other paradoxes by analyzing the critical vocabularies used to describe Degas's work. By reading several groups of the artist's images through the lens of a sequence of critical texts, Armstrong shows how our critical and popular expectations of Degas are overturned and subverted. This is a reprint of the book first published by the University of Chicago Press in 1991. ... Read more

Product Description
An intriguing, marvelously illustrated, landmark survey of this popular painter's work.

We tend to think of Degas as an Impressionist who painted lovely ballerinas and lively scenes at the racetrack. As Werner Hofmann so ably demonstrates in his magisterial new study, that viewpoint fails to do justice to the issues that Degas addressed in his art and to how innovative he truly was. Focusing on people in their social environment, on their relationships and their frequent isolation, Degas embraced many kinds of personal alienation in his work.

His early paintings depict members of the bourgeoisie mainly in the role of observers (as in The Bellelli Family of 1859). Degas shows them indulging in leisure pursuits, as art collectors and museum visitors, or as members of the public at the theater and the races, but they are self-involved and shrouded in silence.

This aura of self-possessed calm contrasts with that of the people who inhabit the world of entertainment. Degas depicted all the stages of public performance: behind the scenes, the performances themselves, and the post-performance collapse of illusion. Hofmann investigates this in various contexts: the self-absorbed body (women at their toilette); the trained body (ballet rehearsals and dancers on stage); musicians; and the marketed body (women in brothels). 215 illustrations, 135 color. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for Degas fans
This book is worth every penny you pay for it, and then some. It gives you a full page of information on Degas at the beginning of the book. Just 1 page. The next 44 pages are his sketches. You get 47 of these, most of them fill the entire page. Each plate is of the highest quality. It's almost as if you're looking directly into Degas' sketchbook. Alot of them even show where he made changes to what he originally drew. Most of them have his notes. Nearly all of them have his signature. Printed under each plate is it's title, size, and year it was drawn. This is, for the most part, the beginning of his wonderful paintings. The sketches from his studies of the dancers.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who even remotely likes Degas, or anyone who likes good art. The sketches are just beautiful, and there isn't a whole lot of history overshadowing the art. This book is just amazing. A must have! ... Read more

Product Description
This volume represents a reconstruction of Edgar Degas' private collection of over 5000 paintings, drawings and prints. It came to light at his death in 1917 and has long since been dispersed. The collection featured many works by the French 19th-century masters, Delacroix, Ingres and Daumier. It also demonstrated Degas' profound interest in the art of his contemporaries, particularly Manet, Cezanne, Gauguin, van Gogh and Cassatt. Degas' passionate pursuit of the art he admired, his relationships with other artists, his desire to found a museum, and the sale of his work at auction in 1918 as the bombs fell on Paris, are among the topics discussed in 11 accompanying essays.Amazon.com Review
When Edgar Degas died in 1917, his heirs found crate after crate gathering dust in the rented rooms inhabited by the isolated old artist. The opened containers revealed one of the greatest personal art collections of all time: There were paintings, drawings, and prints by El Greco, Ingres, Delacroix, Daumier, Cassatt, Manet, van Gogh, Cézanne, and Degas himself, including the famous Bellelli Family, a work from his youth that Degas could never bear to part with. When his heirs auctioned off the collection in 1918, governments granted national museums special funds to make purchases, even though it was the height of World War I and money was tight. The museums, it turned out, were also aided by the war--on the day of the sale, cannon fire sent most bidders running for cover. The ones who remained got bargain prices. This gorgeous book is filled with color plates of many of the paintings, and its 14 thoughtful essays are invaluable to comprehending the tastes of a single artist, one with the eye and the wherewithal to put together such an amazing collection. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to Degas for young children
My preschooler loves the artist series of books by Laurence Anholt, who not only writes stories that young children (and yes, even adults) can relate to, but illustrates his works with vibrant colors that seem to almost leap off the pages. In "Degas and the Little Dancer", young Marie aspires to be a famous ballerina, and her poor parents scrimp and save to send her to a good ballet school. There, Marie flourishes, but when tragedy strikes, young Marie may have to give up her ballet lessons. Help arrives in the form of artist/sculptor Edgar Degas (1834-1917) who happens to frequently paint and sculpt the dancers at Marie's school. He offers her money in return for her posing for him. The relationship is initially fraught with tension as Degas is a harsh taskmaster, but one night, Marie glimpses a vulnerable side to the hot-tempered artist.

This is a wonderful introduction to Degas, especially for young readers, and I would recommend the entire artist series of books by Laurence Anholt. They are all well-written, with engaging stories derived from actual events, and gorgeously illustrated (he has also written about Monet, Van Gogh, Da Vinci, Picasso, and others). The message in this book is heartwarming indeed - one's dreams may not always materialize, yet one can still find happiness, albeit in unconventional ways at times.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great little book
I purchased this book for my 4 year old daughter who loves ballet and enjoys reading. she liked the story and really liked the paintings.

4-0 out of 5 stars I Like This Book... My 4yr old is bored by it
I agree this may indeed be a book for slightly older children. My daughter does not like this book nearly as much as I do. The drawings are wonderful, and I plan to buy more from this series when she is a bit older.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read if travelling to Paris
My 9 year old daughter read this book just before we went to Paris and literally dragged me to the Musee d'Orsay to see all works by Edgar Degas. She then read everything else by Anholt and is now chafing at the bit to see works by Picasso. Anholt's books are wonderfully illustrated, show the works of the artists, and know how to appeal to a child's imagination. We are fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Degas and the Little Dancer: A Story About Edgar Degas
Laurence Anholt created a wonderful opportunity for youngsters, and adults, to learn about art history. Never before have I ever experienced Degas in this manner. I have given this book to many 5-year olds interested in ballet as well as art. It's become a treasured book for both the child and the parents. ... Read more
