5-0 out of 5 stars So much more than a ballet story
My teacher read us this book. She really likes art and wanted to show us how wonderful the world of art can be. I love the pictures in this book. The brushstrokes really bring the paintings to life. I also learned some french words from reading the book - oui, I would buy this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars very good book
I truly enjoyed this book. The books illustrations were great.I have read many books on Degas and this was one of the best.I would recommend it to any one .

4-0 out of 5 stars Marie in Fourth Position
The author beautifully brings to life Marie and Monsieur Degas. My five-year-old daughter especially liked the illustrations, which are done in a Degas-like style. This book will make you want to run out to themuseum to see the Degas sculpture in person. My daughter liked the bookeven better than Degas and the Little Dancer, a similar book by LaurenceAnholt which I believe takes a few more liberties with the facts but whichwe also liked. The Anholt book, unlike the Littlesugar book, hasreproductions of several Degas works, which were a very nice touch. ... Product Description
Ballet dancers and late nudes constitute one of the peaksof nineteenth century art. Both are images which were made famous byEdgar Degas.Contemporaries described Degas' nudes in terms ofexcited horror; "Crouching, gourd-like women fill the bathtubs...Whoare these women?Whores or housewives?"Nobody knows because of themanner in which Degas chose a distinct method to paint these women.Instead of dramatizing the figure's nakedness, Degas discreetly allowsher to carry on with her essentially private activities, unobservedand thus, uninhibited. It is this "keyhole" depiction that this bookcaptures. ... Product Description
Edgar Degas, long known for his formally innovative, "slice-of-life" views of nineteenth-century Parisian life, is today recognized as an artist whose commitment to recording the contemporary world led him to challenge conventional stereotypes in art and to confront many of the social tensions of his time. Norma Broude, Professor of Art History at The American University and a pioneer in the feminist reassessment of Degas's images, explores the French artist's unusual presentations of men as well as women, as both grappled with the challenges and uncertainties of shifting gender roles and lifestyles in the modern world.

Product Description
One of art history’s most admired artists, Edgar Degas (1834–1917) challenged contemporary conventions with his intriguing working methods. This generously illustrated study is the latest title in the National Gallery’s series Art in the Making. Drawing on both technical studies and documentary evidence, it takes a fascinating look at Degas’s techniques in the context of his life and artistic milieu as well as his place in the Impressionist movement.

The book includes a vivid biographical sketch, an essay on Degas’s working methods and materials, a discussion of his reputation in Britain, and catalogue entries on 14 works owned by or on loan to the National Gallery.

This book is the catalogue for an exhibition at the National Gallery, London from November 10, 2004 to January 30, 2005, sponsored by ExxonMobil

David Bomford is Senior Restorer; Sarah Herring is Isaiah Berlin Assistant Curator of Nineteenth-Century Paintings; Christopher Riopelle is Curator of Nineteenth-Century Paintings; Jo Kirby is Senior Scientific Officer; and Ashok Roy is Head of the Scientific Department, all at the National Gallery, London.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great book for little ballerinas
my daughter really loves looking at pretty ballerinas & dancers, as many other 4 year old girls, I think. So, I bought her this book and she loves it.We have many of the other art books, but this one is special to her.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful pictures, great story
Very durable board book, Just enough words to tell a story without keeping you (and the kids) up all night at bedtime. The ending is about sleep, so a great bedtime book. And who doesn't like Degas?

2-0 out of 5 stars We bought several books in this series before I realized I just don't like them that much
Can't fault the art, it's a great way to introduce kids to Degas.

And the text... well, I can take it or leave it. It sounds trite to my ears, though, so I prefer to leave it. The author's got a tin ear when it comes to rhythm, nothing seems to scan right.

The really bad part about these books is that they're cheaply made. I've had them fall apart on me while other books that we've had longer and that we read more often are in great shape.

You can't have a poor-quality board book, it just doesn't work. I can't in good conscience recommend these books until that little problem is fixed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful board book
I got this book for my daughter when she was a baby. She's 2 1/2 now and still enjoys it.I probably like it more than she does. The pictures are just beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars lovely book
Wonderful Degas photos illustrate ballet beautifully, I wanted one of them for myself. ... Read more
