Product Description
From the Pax Romana to Peter Mayle, Provence's lovely climate and lively landscape have proven irresistible to visitors, and especially artists. The fabled landscape cheered up even Van Gogh, whose short but productive time there resulted in paintings in blazing golds and uncharacteristically bright letters to his brother. This exhibition catalogue collects some 180 works from a fertile century and a half of painting, encompassing Classicism, Romanticism, Naturalism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, and Cubism. The tour of Provence starts with Vernet's high views of the port of Marseilles (a favorite subject of others as well), continues through late-18th-century celebrations of natural phenomena such as the gorges of Ollioules, and comprehensively covers the explosion of masterworks of the 1880s leading into the 1920s, including those by Monet, Renoir, Gauguin, Cézanne, Derain, Dufy, and Braque. By primarily focusing on landscape, Right Under the Sun allows us to see these master artists anew, and offers insight into the development of Provençal painting, examining the effect of the harsh light and the rise of the panoramic compositional format.Essays by Nicholas Cendo, Denis Coutagne, Benoît Countancier, Fred Leeman, Vincent Pomerède, Richard Thompson and Marie-Paule Vial.Hardcover, 9.5 x 11 in./288 pgs / 230 color. ... Product Description
Apollinaire was modernism's first champion, and after his early death in 1918, he became its first saint. Lying in a hospital bed in 1915, recovering from combat wounds suffered in World War I, Apollinaire assembled the fragments of a tragicomic, mock-epic, and occasionally obscene autobiography-a-clef: The Poet Assassinated. This novella recounts the life and death of Croniamantal, whose birth is "saluted" by the Eiffel Tower's "beautiful erection," who rises through the Parisian literary world to proclaim himself "the greatest of living poets," and who is then torn to pieces by a mob. A statue built "out of nothing, like poetry and glory," is constructed in his honor. This translation is by Matthew Josephson, an American editor who arrived in Paris just after the war and entered the circle of avant-garde artists and poets that had been galvanized by Apollinaire's life and death. Josephson was among the first to introduce these dadaists and surrealists to the U.S. via his archetypal small magazine, Broom, and among his most ambitious projects was this translation, published by Broom as a limited edition book in 1923 and never since reprinted. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Los cuentos fantásticos de Apollinaire
... Product Description
The early decades of the 20th century saw unprecedented cooperation between the performing and visual arts. Painters and other visual artists working in a variety of avant-garde styles, such as Cubism, Surrealism, Dadaism, Constructivism, and Futurism, worked in the world of theater and dance throughout Europe, creating masterpieces inspired by the explosion of creativity in the performing arts, from the ballets of Diaghilev and Balanchine to the plays of the Russian Meierkhol'd and Futurists such as Marinetti, and operas by the likes of Wagner and Offenbach. It was this burst of integration that led to the formulation of the idea of the "Total Art Creation," (a term coined by Wagner), and enriched both the theater and the visual arts. This handsome volume, published on the occasion of a major exhibition at the Reina Sophia Museum in Madrid, examines these avant-garde experiments in fusion between the arts with extensive color illustrations by virtually every major painter of the period:artists like Picasso, Kandinsky, Leger, and others, as well as in-depth essays on several of the performing art forms and the ways they involved visual artists in their production.

Featuring Works by: Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Fernand Leger, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, Francis Picabia, Andre Derain, Juan Gris, Georgio De Chirico, Kasimir Malevich, Alexander Rodchenko, George Grosz, El Lissitzky and others.

Essays by John Bowlt, Linn Garafola,Eric Michaud, Maria Teresa Ocana and Marga Paz.

Product Description
Cézanne and the Dawn of Modern Art presents selected paintings by Paul Cézanne alongside works by younger artists that reveal the powerful influence of the man hailed as the founder of modern painting. The driving forces in the reception of Cézanne's art were not art critics, art historians, or even the artist himself, but rather other artists--primarily the Fauves led by Matisse, de Vlaminck, and Derain; and the Cubists including Picasso, Braque, and Léger--all of whom absorbed and elaborated on Cézanne's revolutionary ideas about color and composition.

Against this background of Cézannisme, the book presents key works by Cézanne and younger artists in revealing juxtapositions. Readers will discover analogies and variations between the works of the "father of modern art" and those of his successors in a series of related motifs--portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. This volume is, indeed, a compact history of the icons of modern art. It offers new insight into one of modern art's most complex artists, traces the influence of Cézanne's work on a succeeding generation of 20th-century artists, and examines tendencies in Cézanne's art that paved the way for both the Fauve and Cubist movements. From the moment he begins to put down a stroke, the painting is already there. -Pablo Picasso on Paul CézanneEdited by Felix A. Baumann, Walter Feilchenfeldt, and Hubertus Gassner.

Product Description
Monet's London: Artists' Reflections on the Thames intimately explores Expressionist Claude Monet's London series of paintings, especially those that immortalized the Thames River. In this volume we are invited to explore the scope of the socio-cultural context of that time, through the works of Monet's contemporaries: Derain, Coburn, Fenton, Pennell, and Whistler, to name a few. In the latter half of the 19th century, London, specifically around the Thames, had become a seductive urban landscape--a place that encouraged artists to create.

Not only does Monet's London document an important exhibition, but it is also the first publication to thoroughly document and discuss the artistic and cultural context of Modernist London (1859-1914), with special emphasis on the visual power of the Thames River.

The Thames was all gold. It was beautiful, so I set to work in a frenzy following the sun and its reflections in the water. --Claude Monet

Read more
