Product Description
The cycle of 50 etchings that German Expressionist Otto Dix created in 1924 are reproduced in this volume and reflect the antimilitarism and hatred for war that Dix expressed after his service in World War I. Dix's work is distinguished by its treatment of war subject matter, emerging in images of destruction, disfigurement, and maiming of the human body that offer an apocalyptic vision of the world. An introduction to biographical details including Dix's participation in the Great War and the evolution of his artistic vision is provided. ... Read more

Product Description
Between 1921 and 1933, while painter Otto Dix was in his 30s and early 40s--in the years following the Great War, in which he had fought for Germany at the Somme, and which had driven him to make some of the most controversial, violent art of his generation--Dix put much of his artistic energy into portraits of his lover and later wife, Martha. The paintings, watercolors, drawings and humorous sketches brought together here show Martha Dix advancing through roles as a sophisticated, emancipated woman; as lover, muse, and intellectual companion; and then as mother and heart of the family. The painterís widely varying attitudes toward his most frequent model, which range from admiration and intimacy to increasing distance, transpose themselves into a myriad of styles. The titles of the works, which range from emotionally charged imagery to matter-of-fact description, underscore this shift. Martha Dixís portraits, organized here by the Otto Dix Foundation she helped to found, document the urbanity, shifting gender roles, fashions, arts and artistic and social freedoms that bloomed in the 1920s, as well as Otto Dixís shifting perspectives and techniques. Comes with a sexy garter-esque ribbon page-marker. ... Read more

Excerpt:Dietrich Peltz item Awards: Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords Generalmajor Dietrich Peltz (born 9 June 1914 in Gera died 10 August 2001 in Munich ) was a German World War II Luftwaffe bomber pilot. Peltz joined the army in 1934, undergoing pilot training in 1935. After training, he flew in the Polish and French campaigns with StG 76, achieving 102 missions on the Ju-87 Stuka before converting to the Junkers Ju-88 with II./KG 77 in the summer of 1940. He was awarded the Knight's Cross in October 1940. In March 1941, Hauptmann Peltz was elevated to Gruppenkommandeur of II Gruppe. In the late summer of 1941 the unit was transferred to East Prussia, to fly missions against targets in the Northern sector, including the Leningrad-Moscow railway line, canals and lock gates. Here Peltz was instrumental in developing accurate bombing techniques, allowing his group to achieve success against precision targets which previously could be achieved with much larger bomber forces. Peltz was awarded the Oak Leaves to the Knight's Cross in October 1941. In late 1941, Major Peltz was made Commanding Officer of the Bomber Unit Commanders School at Foggia , where all operational bomber commanders were trained in the latest operational techniques. Peltz was then tasked to raise I./KG 66, a unit to develop the use of pioneering types of precision guided munitions then under development in Germany, such as the Fritz X and Henschel Hs 293 , against Allied shipping. Operational by October 1942, this unit was sent to Norway against the Allie... ... Read more

Product Description
This book documents a remarkable joint exhibition of work bythe 20th-century German artist Otto Dix and the contemporary Los Angelesartist Raymond Pettibon. The show features a generous cross-section of workson paper by Dix from the entirety of his career, beginning with his earliestworks from the turn of the 20th-century, inspired by Nietzsche, to hisclassic war postcards from his experieinces during World War I, to laterworks that examine themes of love and death. Pettibon respeonds to theseworks by executing drawings on the walls of the museum where the Dix worksare hung. These drawings, a blood red heart, human eye, and other organs, speak to the themes explored by Dix, and are accompanied by Pettibon'scaptions. Together, Dix's drawings, etchings, and illustrations, andPettibon's interventions combine to create an installation that reflects thepast, present, and future of figurative art.

Raymond Pettibon is a well-known California-based artist whose comic-likeillustrations, complete with captions, have won him a large following amongfans of pop art. His extremely rare self-published books are highly soughtafter by collectors, and his work has been exhibited in recent years in soloshows at The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Renaissance Society inChicago. He has also illustrated album covers for rock groups includingSonic Youth and Black Flag. Otto Dix was born in Germany in 1891. Hisservice as a private and seargent in World War I was a formative experiencethat led to some of his most recognized work, his etching protfolio from theearly 1920s entitled "The War." Fired from his job teaching art in Dresdenby the Nazis, Dix retired to a quiet life of painting during the 1930s and1940s. After the War, Dix resumed his art career, working in the media ofpainting, drawing, etching, and lithographs, until his death in 1969.

Edited by Hans-Werner Schmidt. Essays by Ingeborg Kahler, Roberto Ohrt andUlrike Rudiger.
