Product Description
Purportedly the first artist to produce an abstract painting, American artist Arthur Dove (1880-1946) occupies a central place in early American modernism. This book accompanies a major exhibition on Dove, organized by the Addison Gallery of American Art and the Phillips Collection. It covers the period from 1908 through 1946. 54 duotones and 90 color illustrations .Amazon.com Review
For years it seemed that the American abstractionist Arthur Dove was nearly forgotten. This book, compiled to accompany the first major exhibition of his work since the early 1970s, is a worthy tribute to his legacy. Dove's small, vibrant, enigmatic abstractions, like those of his good friend Georgia O'Keeffe, were tied to his observations of the world around him. There were always a few of his works on view at the Washington, D.C., Phillips Collection, which sponsored the exhibition in conjunction with the Addison Gallery of American Art. However, Dove's work rarely turned up in print--except for the witty yet uncharacteristic collage The Critic--a monocle on roller skates. This collection, long overdue, is chock-a-block with color plates of paintings, collages, drawings, family photographs, and other biographical material, all woven together by the exhibition's curators in three graceful essays. ... This book is excellent.I bought it at the exhibit of the same name, that was put together by the Phillips Collection. It was a great show and this is the only way to see it now.Dove was the first abstract painter, at the same time as Kandinsky but having never seen Kandinsky's work until several years later. ... Product Description
The first book to focus exclusively on the luminous watercolors and pastels of Arthur Dove (1880-1946), this volume explores the contributions of these mediums to the development of Dove's distinctive images of the American landscape. Dove's landmark pastel series of 1911-12, "The Ten Commandments," represents American modernism's first breakthrough into abstraction. His subsequent pastels of the 1910s and 1920s provided him with the stylistic innovations he later adapted in his oil paintings. Watercolor became the primary medium of Dove's summer months in the early 1930s and remained so throughout his career.Bringing together watercolors and pastels from collections across the country, this book will be of deep interest to both scholars and admirers of twentieth-century American art. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good book about hard to find artist
I like this book because it offers a good text with some very nice reproductions of Arthur Dove's work. His work has always been a favorite and finding books about him specifically is a challenge. This book is very good for someone who wants to have a record of his watercolors in particular, since seeing actual shows with his work is even harder to come across! ... Read more

Product Description

From the outset of her career, Georgia O’Keeffe credited her introduction to modernism as deriving in part from a reproduction of a pastel by Arthur Dove she saw around 1913. By this time Dove was well established as the foremost modernist artist in America, yet O’Keeffe herself would later become a source of renewal for his work.

Renowned scholar Debra Bricker Balken here offers the first investigation into the interrelationship between these two great artists. She shows that while Dove’s sensual evocations of landscape—his abstractions of nature’s undulating rhythms and forms—offered inspiration for O’Keeffe, the influence of O’Keeffe’s work on Dove was equally significant. After 1930, Dove turned to O’Keeffe’s early works for renewed aesthetic inspiration, mining, as he put it, her “burning watercolors.”

Beyond examining the impact of these mutual influences, this beautifully illustrated publication situates Dove and O’Keeffe within the circle of Alfred Stieglitz, and brings them into a fuller context within the modernist scene of the 1920s and 1930s. What emerges is a fascinating look at the first pivotal moment of modernism in America.

5-0 out of 5 stars Darn! Another Book Out of Print!
No point reviewing it in detail. Hartley, Dove, and O'Keefe are three of my favorite 20th C painters, and I was reminded of this book by seeing some of their works in the new De Young Museum in San Francisco. Hartley's stock seems to be rising these days. The Walker Museum in Minneapolis is the best place to get to know him. I had a chance to buy a Hartley canvas some twenty years ago, but I thought it was overpriced. Terrible mistake! It would sell for six to eight times more now. With critical assessments shifting from the who-influenced-whom approach to a more open-eyed confrontation with the paintings per se, Hartley is bound to rise even higher.

The new De Young didn't thrill me at first. It looks a lot like Darth Vader's garage from the outside, and it was built to house an essentially provincial collection. HOWEVER... It's getting a comfortable feeling inside, with excellent viewing angles and light, and the collection includes three wonders: 1)great stuff from Indonesia, well displayed and intelligently labeled. 2)great stuff from Mesoamerica, also well displayed. 3)about four good gallery rooms of 20th C American paintings, including the three mentioned above, and Diebenkorn, Jess, de Kooning, Hopper, TH Benton, etc. I like to jog through Golden Gate Park, stop at the De Young to view just one gallery or even one painting, and then jog out to the Pacific. ... Product Description
When Duchamp moved from Paris to New York in 1915, he was disappointed by the predominantly nature-based abstraction he observed, publicly proclaiming that American artists were too dependent on outmoded European traditions and had overlooked their greatest subjects--the skyscraper and the machine. Meanwhile, the artists associated with Alfred Stieglitz and his "291" gallery remained loyal to their belief in nature as a source of ongoing renewal for visual culture, and emphasized the crucial role that intuition and spirituality played in their creation of art. The crossfire between Duchamp and Stieglitz and their respective circles defined a critical moment in early twentieth-century American art. Debating Modernism includes reproductions of work by artists from both camps, from Charles Demuth, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Paul Strand to Man Ray, Francis Picabia, and Marsden Hartley. An essay by curator Debra Bricker Balken traces the threads of the debate through the 1910s and 20s, and also addresses the appearance of sexualized imagery in nearly all of these artists' works, a phenomenon that ironically unifies the two seemingly opposed camps. Jay Bochner's essay focuses on the artists' respective violations of American expectations about art.

Artists Include:Jean Crotti, Stuart Davis, Charles Demuth, Arthur Dove, Marcel Duchamp, Marsden Hartley, John Marin, Georgia O'Keefe, Francis Picabia, Man Ray, Morton Schamberg, Charles Sheeler, Joseph Stella, Florine Stettheimer, Alfred Stieglitz, John Storrs, Paul Strand, Max Weber, Beatrice Wood and Marius de Zayas.
