Product Description

Announcing a new book from Apress and the OakTable Network:

Oracle Insights: Tales of the Oak Table presents eleven world-renowned industry specialists proffering their own highly experienced views, input, and insights on Oracle&emdash;where it's been, where it's going, how (and how not) to use it successfully, the software and techniques that they've introduced to help people achieve their goals, and some frightening tales of what can happen when fundamental design principles are ignored.

The collaborating authors have solved many of the worst Oracle performance problems in the world, and they've each saved at least one doomed flagship project. Over many years they've been sharing their unique knowledge with each other at conferences, around the OakTable, and in coffee shops, restaurants, and bars on five continents. Now they want to share their key insights with you.

A major focus of this book concerns the ways in which you can avoid common and debilitating mistakes when building Oracle software projects. From these stories, you'll learn the simple steps that will help you avoid real pain on your next (or current) Oracle project. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Secrets about Oracle REVEALED; or "Failure is a Repeatable Process"!
This book delivers the fun "back stories" on both Oracle databases in particular, and database-oriented application development in general. For example: why did Oracle personnel -- in sheer desperation -- start instrumenting the DBMS? Because they couldn't figure out what their highly-complex software was doing either! Now it's public knowledge how to track every step of Oracle execution.

Why do projects fail despite Oracle being highly-scalable? Because people *assume* they know what the Oracle DBMS will do, so they never test for scalability before throwing the project into production!Tale after tale prove you can't optimize what you never tested: only ignorance and hubris are infinitely scalable!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
If you wanna do Oracle DBA/architecture professionally, you'll end up reading this one. Sooner is better than later. Similar in world view to the AskTom site and oracle-l. Database work from the inside....

2-0 out of 5 stars Nearly useless for the advanced DBA
The book starts off with "A Brief History of Oracle" that lasts 68 of the 395 pages of this book...

Then it proceeds with various chapters by noted Oracle gurus that haveserious flaws of being too superficial and random in their coverage of Oracle technologies. No aspect of Oracle is covered in depth.

Worse yet, some of the authors have devoted far too little of their time on their chapters. Some of the chapters are nothing more than a bunch of philosophical rantings about Oracle and database management.

If you are interested in Oracle performance tuning, I recommend books specifically devoted to the subject by a highly regarded author (Cary Milsap and Jonathan Lewis comes to mind). If you are interested in reading half motivated essays by Oracle gurus, then this book fits the bill.

If you are unfamiliar with Oracle performance tuning and architecture, this book will offer a lot of interesting insights. But finding good technical nuggets of Oracle architecture and performance tuning will require some lengthy, and often unneccessary, reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and fascinating read for aspiring Oracle gurus
As an Oracle and SQL Server DBA for the last seven years I found this book an excellent and very refreshing change from technical manuals and books on Oracle database design and administration. The first few chapters are priceless from Oracle history to the useful read on Oracle tuning using Wait events. I really enjoyed learning how the product evolved from inception to the new version of 10g. All in all money well spent and nice to know that even such gurus as the Oak Table guys are human and have shared tough DBA experiences. Someday I want to meet and work with these guys!

5-0 out of 5 stars I want more books like this one!
I really don't know where I should begin writing this review to give the book a proper credit that it deserves. Hmm...FUN - I think that this word best describes this collection of essays (eleven prominent authors instead of more usual one or two, certainly helped a lot).
Can't remember when was the last time that I read technical book that kept me reading and reading, and reading - simply because all essays were *fun* to read. To be clear, yes I'm an Oracle geek, but I don't think you have to be an expert to understand 'the point' in the majority of the book, on contrary, if you're by any chance an Oracle newbie you have an opportunity to learn from the true experts (from their work done onthe "projects from hell") and pick up some good habits and techniques to start your Oracle career (this book is not really about internals as much as it's about proper design and importance of understanding technology before using it - and using it to the full extent - you'll probably never again write DB agnostic applications, if this was your sin in the past :-).
So, being an expert or not, I'm sure you'll get the true 'message' from this book that will stick with you for the rest of your life (of course experts will enjoy reading it slightly more, they'll finally learn, what AFIEDT.BUF is really all about ;-).
Finally, thank you guys for writing this book, and Mr. Mogens Noorgard (you lucky *****), thank you for "networking" Oak Table members together.
Thank you for reading this review. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars This very good reference, directed at collectors and dealers leaves a bit to be desired.
This very good reference book in approx. 404 pps. with text in the English, French and Dutch languages as befitting a book focused on a Belgian artist, is a 1999 reprint of the 1973 original with the addition of 23 full color prints.
It encompasses the print oeuvre of James Ensor (1860-1949) whose eccentric sensibilities disturbed and delighted the public with his often grotesque imagery. The original premise of the book was to rationalize the artists oeuvre which had been subject to two different prior catalogues that sometimes conflicted with one another and included or reinforced errors, as well as overlooking certain material.
This folio sized book is printed on thick, high quality kaolin-coated pages which make it a pleasure to leaf through even if the B&W reproductions leave a bit to be desired whether due to the source material or the actual printing process.Unfortunately, only critical information is included relating to medium, plate size and descriptions of known states.Although a discussion of the types of paper these issues were printed on no effort was made to match this information with specific plates. Also, there is almost no accompanying commentary so that the images are just starkly laid out even though they often beg for some explanation.I think I found three prints that discussed the underlying meaning of the depicted scenes. One thinks that it wouldn't have been too difficult to add a bit of context and doing so would have made this book a stupendous addition to one's collection.
Interestingly, the book's dust jacket liner notes makes mention of the imminent publication of a definitive catalogue raisonne of Ensor's prints, I can find no evidence of it ever having been printed; although, there is a recent catalogue of his paintings extant.
Anyway, this is a worthwhile acquisition for serious print collectors and dealers.Art fans, unless strictly interested in prints, would likely be able to find a more 'arty' book to buy and enjoy. For my money though, this is the one.It made me wish to go forth and acquire one or more of his prints....especially the hand-coloured ones. ... Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Ostend (Dutch: , Dutch pronunciation: ) is a Belgian city and municipality located in the Flemish province of West Flanders. It comprises the boroughs of Mariakerke, Stene and Zandvoorde, and the city of Ostend proper - the largest on the Belgian coast. In earlier times, Ostend was nothing more than a small village built on the east-end (Dutch: ) of an island (originally called Testerep) between the North Sea and a beach lake. Although small, the village rose to the status of "city" around 1265 when the inhabitants were allowed to hold a market and to build a market hall. The major source of income for the inhabitants was fishing. The North Sea coastline has always been rather unstable and in 1395 the inhabitants decided to build a new Ostend behind large dikes and further away from the always-threatening sea. Ostend on the Ferraris map (around 1775)The strategic position on the North Sea coast had major advantages for Ostend as a harbour but also proved to be a source of trouble. The city was frequently taken, ravaged, ransacked and destroyed by conquering armies. The most important of these events was the three-year Siege of Ostend between 1601 and 1604, with on both sides combined more than 80,000 dead or wounded. In their fight against the Spanish Empire during the Eighty Years' War, the Dutch rebels, the Geuzen, had occupied the city. After this era Ostend turned into a harbour of some importance. In 1722 the Dutch again closed off the entrance to the harbour of Antwerp, the Westerschelde. Therefore, Ostend rose in importance because the city provided an alternative exit to the sea. The Southern Netherlands (largely the territory of present Belgium) had become part of the Au...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more

Excerpt: James Sidney Edouard, Baron Ensor (April 13, 1860 November 19, 1949) was a Belgian painter and printmaker, an important influence on expressionism and surrealism who lived in Ostend for almost his entire life. He was associated with the artistic group Les XX. Ensor's father was of English descent, and his mother was Flemish. A poor student, he left school at the age of fifteen to begin his artistic training with two local painters. From 1877 to 1880, he studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, where one of his fellow students was Fernand Khnopff. Ensor first exhibited his work in 1881. From 1880 until 1917, he had his studio in the attic of his parents' house. His only travels were three brief trips to Paris, London, and Holland. The Rower, 1883, oil on canvas, 79 x 99 cm, Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, AntwerpDuring the late 1800s much of his work was rejected as scandalous, particularly his painting Entry of Christ into Brussels (1888-89), but his paintings continued to be exhibited, and he gradually won acceptance and acclaim. In 1895 his painting The Lamp Boy (1880) was acquired by the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels, and he had his first solo exhibition in Bru...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=7626508 ... Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "James Ensor," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have James Ensor in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with James Ensor when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name James Ensor, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
