5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary
Handsome and well-produced book from ACC: hardback, cloth over boards with gold details in dustjacket. 263 pp; 2.75 pounds. Preface, Introduction, Bibliography, Index.

About 225 illustrations in color and b&w, all of them full-page. Each illustration is supported by a detailed discussion of the formal qualities of the painting, some history of the subject and/or a discussion of what the painter has achieved. The most prominent portrait painters from 1880 to 1920 appear (Whistler, Sargeant) along with many less-well known names (Sickert, Greaves, Steer, Yule, Orpen, McEvoy, and many more.)

"It may seem surprising that at the precise period when the camera became widely available, portrait painting rose to new heights. However, in an era of luxury and opulence, those who patronized the leading painters expected their portraits to emphasize qualities which photography could not easily convey."

Consequently, the images here are vital, lively, painterly, and feature compositions which -- given the traditional limitations of portraiture -- are rather ambitious.

I was quite enthusiastic to see the rather wide range of styles employed here. French influences have clearly snuck into the brains of some of these painters while other images seem firmly rooted in post-Impressionistic aesthetics. There's so much more to see here than the rosy-cheeked angel faces of young women from good families!

Kapitel: Peter Hacker, Wilfrid Bennett Lewis, Gerhard Dünnhaupt, James M. Stayer, Paulo Ribenboim, Arthur Mcdonald, Walter Henry Zinn, Nikolaus F. Troje, Kenneth Hall, Will Kymlicka, George Humphrey. Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Will Kymlicka is a Canadian political philosopher best known for his work on multiculturalism. He is currently Professor of Philosophy and Canada Research Chair in Political Philosophy at Queen's University at Kingston, and Recurrent Visiting Professor in the Nationalism Studies program at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary. Kymlicka received his B.A. (Honours) in philosophy and political studies from Queen's University in 1984, and his D.Phil. in philosophy from Oxford University in 1987, under the direction of G.A. Cohen. He has written extensively on multiculturalism and political philosophy, and several of his books have been translated into other languages. Kymlicka has held professorships at a variety of different universities in Canada and abroad, and has also worked as an advisor to the Government of Canada. One of his main concerns throughout his work is providing a liberal framework for the just treatment of minority groups, which he divides into two basic categories: polyethnic or immigrant groups, and national minorities (such as the Canadian Québécois, or the Māori of New Zealand). He lists criteria for national minorities or "minority nations": By these criteria, the two "minority nations" in Canada are the First Nations population and the Québécois. Kymlicka argues that such minority groups deserve unique rights from the state by the nature of their unique role and history within the national population. Polyethnic groups, however, are less deserving of such rights, since they come to the state voluntarily and thus have some degree of responsibility to integrate to the norms of their new nation. At the same time, Kymlicka acknowledges the problems faced by ...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more

The double orders of the transverse arches and the extradoses, higher than the intradoses, show points of contact with S. Savino at Piacenza (Plate 185), an authentically dated monument of 1107. At S. Savino of Piacenza, however, the arches treated in this peculiar manner are in the main arcade, whereas at S. Martino they are in the transverse arches. S. Martino may, therefore, well be later than S. Savino, and may be ascribed to c. 1120, a date which agrees well with the character of the masonry and the elaborate section of the responds.MONTEVEGLIO,1 S. MARIA ASSUNTAI. This monument has been published by Maestri,2 and is mentioned by Melani.3II. The church of S.
