Product Description
Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975) was one of the most significant sculptors of the 20th century and one of the most successful woman artists of her time. Published to accompany two exhibitions marking the centenary of Hepworth's birth, this is the first book to focus on specific themes in her work rather than offering a chronological survey. The generous color illustrations feature not only her best-known and most popular works, but also a selection never before photographed in color. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Master of Modern Sculpture
If you like Barbara Hepworth's work, this is a "must-have" book.I found out about it quite late (the show was in 2003), so I'm lucky that I was even able to buy a copy.Lots of biographical material and plenty of pictures.Of course, the best thing would be to be able to see her sculpture in person, but this is the next best thing. You won't be disappointed! ... Product Description
Born in Yorkshire in 1903, Barbara Hepworth was determined to become a sculptor despite the misgivings of her parents and the common attitude at the time that a woman studying sculpture was not to be taken seriously. She was part of the generation of British artists that included Henry Moore (with whom she studied in Leeds) and Ben Nicholson (whom she married), and her sculpture explored the forms of life--especially human life--as well as those of mathematics. From the beginning, her work displayed a monumental power, and after World War II it received far wider recognition and acclaim. Hepworth later experimented in new substances such as sheet metal, wire, and bronze, but her work always maintained its nobility, subtlety, and flawless rendering of surface. She died in 1975, after a long illness that did not prevent her from completing the work many consider to be her masterpiece: The Family of Man. A. M. Hammacher, who knew Barbara Hepworth for many years, has provided a highly readable, thorough, and intimate portrait of this great twentieth-century artist. ... Read more

Product Description
English artist Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975) created a unique combination of subtropical garden and sculpture park at Trewyn in St. Ives-a haven of peace that acted as a showplace for her sculpture, a working environment, and an opportunity for Hepworth to pursue her other great love, gardening. This book is a beautiful record of the plants and sculptures at Trewyn throughout the seasons; it explores the evolution of the garden, its purpose, the placement of the works, and the relationship between Hepworth's abstract sculptures and the natural forms that surround them. With specially commissioned photographs taken in all seasons, two essays on Hepworth's work at Trewyn, and full descriptions of both plants and sculptures, this is a wonderful addition to the literature on St. Ives and on Barbara Hepworth. ... Product Description
Yorkshire by birth, resident of St Ives, Cornwall, for more than 30 years, scholarship student at the Royal College of Art at the age of 16, mother of triplets, Honorary Doctor of Letters of five universities, Cornish bard, Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire, and world-famous sculptor: such was Barbara Hepworth, whose life always revolved around the demands of her creative work. This book presents a pictorial record of her life, work and writings over 40 years, from her childhood years to her first marriage to the sculptor John Skeaping and her second marriage to Ben Nicholson; and from figuration through geometric and organic abstraction to the internationally acclaimed grandeur of her large-scale, post-war work. ... Product Description
Barbara Hepworth has been proclaimed by many as the "first great woman sculptor". After years struggling to succeed as an artist, she made a major breakthrough in 1931 with her Pierced Form sculpture. Her works can be seen in major cities across the world, including one at the United Nations building in New York. Many more Hepworth sculptures can be seen at the museum on the site of her Trewyn Studio in St Ives, Cornwall. It was here that Barbara felt truly at home, and the influence of St Ives and its dramatic landscapes can be seen in much of her later work. This title looks at her life, including her social background and aspects of her daily life, and examines the ways in which her work reflected and shaped social and cultural changes. It features panels including quotations and background information, pictures of her work and a timeline of key events and significant works. ... Read more
