Product Description
This a biography of sculptor, Dame Barbara Hepworth. With her second husband, Ben Nicholson, and her contemporary, Henry Moore, she led a group of artists moving away from representative to abstract art. She produced a form that was entirely hers. From the beginning of the 1930s she broke new ground and ten years later she was prominent among avant garde artists working in St Ives and winning international acclaim. Like others, Hepworth received much hostile criticism, but her faith in her work remained unswerving and her talent was rewarded during her life. This book analyzes Hepworth's personal life, her relationships with family and friends. She is portrayed as a woman who set herself standards that filled her life with conflict and contradiction; a person of fierce emotions and little sense of humour; and who, during the 1960s, in the opinion of some who knew her well, from the generous and composed person who had once seemed an oasis of stillness became increasingly arrogant and self-absorbed. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary life
Barbara Hepworth is an exceptional artist not yet sufficiently appreciated. That is why this book contributes to better understand the work of Hepworth, who was a contemporary and friend of Henry Moore, by describing her difficult life both in the personal sphere and also in her professional struggle and achievement.
Festing begins from an undoubtedly neutral point of depart, but the more she knew about Hepworth the more she became a vigorous praiser of her and of her work as well.
From the early years of Hepworth's career to the very day her studio in Saint Ives, at the west end of Britain, got fire and consumed her place and her life, Festing describes Hepworth feelings, thoughts and works, in a fluent and deep text. We have to thank the autor. ... Read more

Product Description
One of a series exploring the lives and work of major artists associated with St Ives, this is a study of Barbara Hepworth and her work as a sculptor, which spanned five decades. Her art is discussed in the light of her contemporaries, including Henry Moore and Ben Nicholson, her second husband. Hepworth's style developed from figurative to geometric to abstract, culminating in the grandeur of her large-scale post-war work. Her best-known work is associated with the landscape around St Ives, where she lived for most of her working life. She remains a central figure in 20th-century art, and the book provides an overview of recent critical thought, and describes how her international reputation was built and sustained. ... Read more
