Product Description

As essential a text for GPs as for dermatologists, this book is an atlas-like representation of the various forms of melanocytic skin lesions associated with cutaneous melanomas and other pigmented skin tumors. It is a comprehensive and up-to-date text on the practical issues surrounding the management of individuals with these lesions. It encompasses the classical methods of morphology such as the clinical and dermoscopic examination and dermatopathology. The book also deals with the most up-to-date diagnostic approaches such as laser scanning in-vivo microscopy and automated diagnosis. The visual ‘atlas’ includes superb clinical, dermoscopic and histopathologic images.

3-0 out of 5 stars Review
Nice overall review of the dermoscopic findings of pigmented lesions ranging from melanocytic to keratinizing and their various clinical features, histopathology, and management; also with each particular type it provides a few case presentations. However, if you are looking for an "atlas" would consider An Atlas of Dermoscopy by Ashfaq A. Marghoob, Ralph Braun MD, and Alfred W. Kopf (Hardcover - Oct 20, 2004. Although the cost is 3x this item, the "atlas" component is much more thorough. This book does describes the 2-step method for pigmented lesions and contains a nice schematic for benign acral nevi. It also touches on confocal. Overall a nice book, but if you are just learning dermoscopy I would pick another atlas and save this one for later. ... Read more

Product Description
This never-before-translated masterpiece—by a heroic best-selling writer who saw his life crumble when he wouldn’t join the Nazi Party—is based on a true story.

It presents a richly detailed portrait of life in Berlin under the Nazis and tells the sweeping saga of one working-class couple who decides to take a stand when their only son is killed at the front. With nothing but their grief and each other against the awesome power of the Reich, they launch a simple, clandestine resistance campaign that soon has an enraged Gestapo on their trail, and a world of terrified neighbors and cynical snitches ready to turn them in.

In the end, it’s more than an edge-of-your-seat thriller, more than a moving romance, even more than literature of the highest order—it’s a deeply stirring story of two people standing up for what’s right, and for each other. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Man Dies Alone
I enjoyed the book and shared it with friends. After reading the biography of the author, I was surprised by the manner in which the novel flowed. It wasn't what I expected, as it was refreshingly better. I was hoping for a different ending, but it did maintain my interest to the bitter end. I have enjoyed reading about the period of history covered in the novel and felt that it probably accurately portrayed the circumstances of the time. Well Done ! Highly recommend ! Wish that there was a follow on book, but alas, the author has long since reached his eternal reward....

4-0 out of 5 stars Gripping
Fascinating window into life under the Nazi regime.Written by an author who lived and worked in Germany before and after World War II, it answered my questions concerning how a citizenry could be a part of or tolerate such an existence. All those who lightly throw around the words fascism or Nazi should read this book. Although I generally prefer more easy going material, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Life under the Nazis
This is an extraordinary account of a couple who wish to alert the public to the horrors of the war (WWll)By leaving postcards denouncing the war they hope to spread disaffection.Unfortunately, most of the cards are handed in to the police and do not make an impact. The couple is caught, and others peripherally connected are also caught and subjected to brutal cross examination. The novel is based on actual facts and paints a remarkable portrait of the domestic scene in wartime Germany.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, interesting story.
This book is interesting in that it presents many of the aspects of German life in WWII from the perspective of a somewhat 'average' German family. This is a different point of view when compared to other pieces I've read. This book will run you through a number of interesting emotions and is descriptive enough to make you feel like you're there. In the end, it's a little hard to figure out if the author has intended to present the main characters with his own opinions or not.If his bias is present, it is veiled enough to let you make your own decisions about the actions of the main characters.I experienced a number of strong emotions while reading this story, and that for me is the true measure of a book.

As an aside, don't read the afterward until afterward (duh). The afterward itself is quite and interesting story, so don't skip it!

5-0 out of 5 stars An unexpected perspective
I have read a lot about the Holocaust and about how it might have felt to be a Jew in Germany, Poland, France during that time.I've read some books about the experiences of people who were gay, and people who were disabled - much narrative of the victims of the Nazi party and the German people.I didn't think that I could get anything out of reading another book about the era. I was very wrong.

Every Man Dies Alone is the first book I have read that tells the tale not from the victim's point of view, nor from the bystander's - nor even from the perpetrators (I am sure books like that exist). It is a novel about the lives of Germans who have some knowledge of what the party does to Jews and others, but whose knowledge is limited - much the way many people don't know a lot about the details of their government. They are uncomfortable with Nazism, to varying degrees, and do the minimum in order to live their lives - pay minimal dues, sign up for the party at work but don't attend meetings. Some of them experience an event - a death, or hearing that a loved one committed atrocities in Hitler's name - that pushes them over the edge into small rebellion.None of these Germans are heroes; most of them simply wish to live their lives in peace.None of them takes so bald a risk as to stand up and publicly declaim the Nazis. But they each find their own way to resist against the Nazi morale, and the beauty of this book is that, although this resistance accomplishes nothing against the massive Nazi machine, it helps the characters learn more about how they can survive in such a place with dignity.

The argument about ordinary Germans is that they all should have risen up against the party and against Hitler, that no amount of protest could be enough until the killings stopped. This novel really brought home how dangerous even the smallest of rebellions could be; how lives could be risked by even going along with the motions, how no one is safe.It conveyed the feeling better than any other of what it was like to be under constant surveillance and at the mercy of those who could lie about you to better themselves, in a time when the lies needed nothing to back them up, to be a risk to you.I was most impressed by the book on all counts.

I couldn't believe when I read in the postscript that it had been written contemporaneously - I wouldn't have thought it possible to write such a book in 1947.Perhaps that is part of why it felt so real, and gripping. ... Read more

Product Description
Color Creates Light: Studies with Hans Hofmann brings together the man, the schools, the painting, the ideas, and the teaching. Jed Perl of The New Republic calls this book "enormously important... nothing less than the missing chapter in the history of the period," for Hofmann's decade of painting in Paris prior to World War I, combined with his observations of the masters of all cultures, enabled him to explain Cubism to the avant-garde and catalyzed the later Abstract Expressionism.

In the ateliers of German emigrant Hans Hofmann (1880-1966) in Munich, New York and Provincetown, talented students later to become some of the most significant artists and educators of the time rubbed shoulders with critics, collectors, and curators, who in turn transmitted and transmuted Hofmann s ideas across Europe, America, Canada, and beyond. From how Hofmann taught to what he taught, artists talk shop about the inner workings of the visual language, required reading for those engaged in creative composition, whether visual, verbal, musical, architectural, cinematic, or choreographic. ...
