A Selection from Hopper's Journals
I just want to add the note that this book contains a selection of the Hopper notebooks, not the complete works.However, it is, as far as I know, the only way these are published, and the pages are very interesting indeed.It is amazing to see how fine these little sketches are of his more famous paintings.It was meant to be a record, a simple catalog, but it reminds one that Hopper was an excellent graphic artist as well as a painter. i think it is a brilliant idea for any artist as a way of keeping touch with larger works instead of with photographs.

This is a wonderful glimpse into the development of Hopper's paintings. It appears to be a photocopy of Hopper's working journals, which were assembled and maintained by his wife Jo over a period of 30+ years. Jo wrote the text and Edward drew a thumbnail sketch for the paintings. For many of the paintings, the text includes the brand of paint (e.g., Rembrandt, Blockx, W&N), the type of canvas and the priming, the studio in which it was painted, and to whom it was sold. Jo frequently included a description of the place, the people, or the mood portrayed in the paintings.

If you're an artist or a serious Hopper fan, you'll enjoy this book.

No thousand words here - just pictures.
This budget priced book contains many lovely and enlightening examples of Hopper's drawings including some studies for some of his well known paintings. This slim volume contains no text at all, not even an introduction, with the single exception of a short blurb on theback cover. The quality of the paper reflects the price of the book but Hopper fans may still find this a valuable addition to their art library.

Very excellent work
I own a lot of Dover art series books. They are excellent books for beginning artists in that they show how the old masters did their early works using different media. Much can be learned from the Dover art books in the use of subject, form, and shading. The Hopper Drawings is one of my favorite Dover art books. Most of the drawings in this book have been made using the Conte crayon. I prefer the Conte crayon over charcoal. It is very sleek, clean, and smooth. The drawings show how masterful Hopper is with the Conte crayon and much can learned by studying his drawings. ... Read more

Hopper through Hoggard
I have always been attracted to Hopper's paintings--how his very human colors and decisive strokes give such depth to what might otherwise have become forgotten scenes--and how appealingly American he is. Now, through Hoggard's poems, I have something else; if not the painter's own words, certainly an imaginatively plausible expression of what he sought and how he sought it. Also, in reading Triangles of Light, I found a reaffirmation of my belief that all art is interdependent and mutually enriching--that all creative endeavor rises out of other creative endeavors. The book gives poetic joy, makes us understand Hopper more fully, and stands also on its own--with poems that are memorable in their own right: lines like "a huge conflagratory fire: sand and water becoming flame", or"His interruptive silences assail her..." I like those--and there are many. (Finally, for those interested in the book as a work of art and a labor of love: Triangles of Light is sensitively designed and beautifully assembled.) ... I have this book plus the one on Chagall from the same series.I plan to get the other titles as well.As a high school art teacher, I plan to use them as references for my nine through twelve classes.The think I like most about them is that the artists are shown in the context of the times in which they lived, and in reference to their contemporaries.The biographical info is very well done, and can be easily understood by young art students. ... Review of Edward Hopper Catalogue Raisonne
A wonderful walk through the life and works of Edward Hopper. Gail Levin is up to her usual very high standards. The reproductions are very good and one can spend hours sifting through this wonderful collection of Hopper's life.

Fantastic colletion for those that know...
Catalogue Raisonné

I'm surprised by the other review here, because he seems to have left out the most important point and purpose of a catalogue raisonné, or perhaps he didn't understand what it was. Levin and New York's Whitney Museum published Hopper's Catalogue Raisonné in 1995 with an introductory price of $600. The price increased to $750 on 1/1/1996 and remained there for over 10 years, effectively pricing it out of reach for many. That's actually not a surprise because this is not intended for most Hopper fans who want coffee table books. This is a scholarly resource publication intended as a research aid.

Briefly, what you'll find here is a set containing four volumes, but only 3 are books; the fourth "volume" shown in the picture actually contains a Windows CD (reportedly NOT Mac compatible) that includes images of the works and scholarly information (provenance, exhibition histories, etc.). The first real print volume contains essays on Hoppers place in American art, all the illustration work, and the etchings. This volume is the weak link here and my only disappointment. The biggest problem is that his etchings are displayed as mere "thumbnails" approximately 1.5 inches square. That's a shame because Hopper's etchings are beautiful; if you haven't had a chance to see them there is still one current Hopper show at the time of this writing. Recent Hopper exhibitions were held at Boston's MFA and the National Gallery in 2007, and the final leg of the tour is Chicago's Art Institute, ending in May 2008. Don't miss it. It's a fantastic show and the best thing Boston's MFA (my local hangout) has done since their famous Sargent exhibition.

The other volumes contain the oils and the watercolors. These images were broken out into two beautiful volumes designed as more typical art books, titled The Complete Oil paintings (erroneously titled "The Paintings of Edward Hopper" here on Amazon) and The Complete Watercolors, also by Levin. You can find both volumes here, but both are now out of print and the Oils book will cost an obscene amount (over $450 at this time). They are both stunning, and have been in my collection for years.

This makes the catalogue Raisonné a great deal. As opposed to paying the amount for the two books individually, you can get both for less. Again, you should understand what this is, and what this is not. If you really just want a typical art book, then I would agree with another review and suggest you collect every other book on Hopper by Levin (they're all excellent and you can get all the images of prints, illustrations, etc.), buy the catalog from the current show (MFA publication by Troyan et. al.), and the books by Hobbs, Mecklenburg, and even Marker (very inexpensive thin book with large prints)

Better Values Elsewhere
If you love Edward Hopper and must have the complete works, you'll buy this regardless of what I say. But if you are just a fan and want to see a bio and highlights there are better compendiums out there. While these books are bound well, the paper could be better quality as could the color reproduction. The biggest drawback is that the books don't lie flat for better viewing.

Again, if you want the complete, historical Edward Hopper - I'd consider this. But for the money and for someone who just admires his more popular works, there are better, and less expensive choices. ... Read more

A Great Catalogue of the Whitney Museum
This beautifully illustrated and informative book is a catalogue of a travelling Whitney Museum exhibition in Germany and the Netherlands. I purchased the book when I visited the Whitney Museum. The book has 100 reproductions of the Whitney's most well known works dated from 1900 to 1950. The purpose of the exhibit and book is to show some of Hopper's paintingsas well as by many other artists who influenced his work. The book begins with a series of essays that focus on Hopper's philosophy as an artist and on all the major American art movements of the first half of the 20th century from the ashcan school to precisionism. There is also an essay about the history of the museum.
The second half of the book deals with the reproductions. The works are divided into seven sections which the first five deals with painting and sculpture. The paintings and sculptures are arranged by art movement and each come with commentary.The first section shows ashcan school works by John Sloan and Robert Henri, who was Hopper's teacher. The second section shows abstract paintings andworks influenced by European art movements. Included in this section are a Futuristic painting by Joseph Stella, a Cubist painting by Max Weber, and three works by Georgia O'Keefe. The third section shows Hopper's works such as "Seven A.M.", and "New York Interior." The fourth section focuses on regionalism and painting during the Depression with works by Thomas Hart Benton and Ben Shahn. The last painting section shows precisionist works by Charles Sheeler and others. The sixth section of the book deals with drawings, prints and watercolors. In this section, you'll see works by Charles Burchfield and John Marin who are known for watercolor painting. The last section deals with the importance of photography in twentieth century art with works by Alfred Steiglitz and Edward Steichen. In the end of thebook there are short biographies of all the featured artists. As a lover of art, I learned about new artists that I never heard of until I glanced through the book. A Wonderful Collection of Edward Hopper Paintings
EDWARD HOPPER'S NEW ENGLAND is a collection of some of Hopper's works of art inspired during his travels in New England. Though Hopper was primarily a New York artist, he spent many summers in New England and produced many of his most memorable paintings during his visits. Some of his visits were to New England's best known artist colonies such as Gloucester, Monhegan Island in Maine, and Provincetown. People familiar with current Cape Cod artists will see the way in which Hopper inspired a good number of them when they see his paintings of Truro and Provincetown, two of Hopper's favorite locales. Many of the locations can still be found today, though they have changed over the years. The paintings of Gloucester bring the simplicity of this old fishing community alive. The pictures from Maine are some of Hopper's famous depictions of lighthouses and sailing vessels. Some nature scenics are also included in this volume. A Poets Ruminations
This is not a book for anyone seeking information on life and/or the works of the great Americn painter, Edward Hopper. Pictures are all in black and white, while few facts about his life ae given.
This is a book solely for the person sufficiently familiar with the artists work to appreciate this outstanding poets reflections on the impact of some of his paintings and some fearures in the picture which produce those effects.
Most will find little meat for thought here. Most will find these minimal responses unsatisfying. Those who know the poetry of this Pulitzer prize winning Poet Laureate of The United state will gain some insight into the workings of his poetic perspective when turned on the subject of Hopper's painting.
Others who want to tune in to a poetic sensibility writing prose may find it gratifying.
It is a very quick read with each selection taking no more than a few minutes to read although those who want to apply Strand's conceptions to their own appraisal of these works will find much more to chew over.

Refreshing, concise, insightful
Just because the previous reviewer didn't get what he expected from this volume doesn't mean it isn't brilliant in its own right.From an outsider's perspective (I am not an art critic, but a literary scholar), I found Mark Strand's insights into Hopper's work to be refreshing and insightful, the first collection of art criticism I have read that speaks thoughtfully and intelligently to its readership without making the assumption that the reader already has the thoughts and inclinations of the critic him or herself.Instead, this is a book that teaches, and I am grateful for it!

Strand Leaves The Reader Stranded
I found this thin volumen incredibly inadequate, as it barely (if at all) mentions some of Hoppers most important themes such as silence, voyeurism, and loneliness.Strand spends approximately two poorly developed paragraphs on a number of paintings, often doing nothing more than describing them with bland geometric terms and giving little-or no-insight.I'm in the process of doing a six month research and writing project on Hopper, I found this to be the worst of all my resources.

Additionlly, the black and white reproductions are tiny and worthless.The book is of little value in any capacity, which is saying something considering my love for Hopper and art history analysis and evaluation.In fact, in the Preface, Strand acknowledges that this volume flies in the face of previous scholars.He must have meant he was going against quality analysis with support, because his book says nothing.There is no point whatsoever!Quite frustrating.

A wonderful resource
Please note: If it isn't clear from the editorial review or the description above, this book shows Hopper's oil paintings only. It is one half of a set, the other, titled The Watercolors of Edward Hopper, showing watercolors only!

There are many Hopper books out there today, but none is as pictorially complete as this one (the one exception is Levin's Catalogue Raisonne, from which this book was derived). The pictures and information are wonderful. Levin has arranged the works in chronological order, so you can follow Hopper's progression through his career. The colors are good and the paintings - one to a page - are well documented whenever possible. I have several Hopper books yet I refer to this one again and again because it is so complete. There is minimal text here; it's not Hopper's life story or an account of each paintings development - though there are a few notable exceptions, such as Nighthawks. What it is is a complete archive of his oil paintings from art school to the end of his life. It's a wonderful book that any serious Hopper fan should consider. Levin should be congratulated on her work. Highly recommended.
