Product Description
Edward Hopper (1882-1967) is generally considered the major twentieth-century realist. Such paintings as House by the Railroad, Early Sunday Morning, and Nighthawks seem to embody the loneliness of the individual in the cities and open spaces of America. Hopper strongly influenced contemporary American art, and there are countless photographs and films inspired by his work. The forty paintings in this volume give a representative overview of Hopper's art. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Small book, but potent
When you need a bracing shot of Edward Hopper's realism but don't want to drag your treasured 'coffee-table' books down from the good bookcase, just reach for this handy little paperback. Among the 40 color plates -- approximately postcard size and of good quality -- you will probably find the favorite painting you were looking for. The essay by Heinz Liesbrock, "The Silent Truth of Light: Edward Hopper's Oeuvre", gives a quick written overview. A good value, and an artist whose significance seems to be ever-increasing.

Product Description
The complete watercolors of arguably America's best and probably America's most "American" artist. This magnificent volume reproduces all of Hopper's 357 watercolor paintings. They were first published in the four-volume catalogue raisonne of the artist's works. Now they are offered at a price that will make them attractive to anyone seriously interested in art. Hopper was comfortable in both oil and watercolor, although his technique with each medium varied considerably. While oils were done in the studio, often from detailed sketches with notations on colors, the watercolors were painted on location and seem far more spontaneous. In the years since Hopper's death in 1967, many of his paintings have achieved iconographic status as statements about this country. His empty cityscapes and countrysides speak of our sense of loneliness and alienation, while his fascination with the light on Cape Cod and the buildings in Gloucester result in the evocation of feelings that can only be described as uniquely American. 350 color plates, with notes and annotations by Gail Levin. Published in association with the Whitney Museum of Art. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
Levin has split her Catalogue Raisonne of Hopper's work into two books with this one containing all the watercolors. I must disagree with other reviewers here regarding their complaints about the size of the images. In my opinion, it's unrealistic to make the images larger without changing the size/format of the book - which matches the companion of Hopper's oil paintings. Besides, this is a complete catalog of all his watercolors and I think it works very well. Don't assume that the images are "tiny"; they fit the pages and hence, I won't downgrade my assessment to match theirs.

Levin has done an outstanding job and I think all Hopper fans will appreciate this book. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars There's nothing like seeing them all together
This would be a 5 star book if the reproductions were just a bit larger, but it's a small complaint. If you like Hopper you will enjoy discovering works you've never seen before. If you're a painter too, you'll like the format: 1 page of introductory text and nothing but reproductions after that! Lots of people are familiar with Hopper's quote "All I ever wanted to paint was sunlight on the side of a house." This is the book that makes you understand what he meant: his mostly on-sight watercolors have a sun drenched quality that his oils didn't catch as often, good as they are. Hard to imagine anyone being disappointed by this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A feast for Hopper watercolor lovers!
It is exactly what it claims: a"catalog" of all Hopper watercolors, with short notes about each work from the artists' notebook. I appreciate the compact, easy to handle size, and the clean design, yet wish for larger reproductions.(Which explains the 4-star rating.) I was delighted to see many watercolors for the first time. If you are disapointed by the lack of text, get Virginia Mecklenburgs' book on Hopper watercolors...it's as "easy" and wonderful to read as this book is to look at. I look forward to owning the companion, The Complete Paintings of Edward Hopper. ... Read more

Venezia does a great job of making Hopper's biography interesting to kids, and his work accessible and exciting to them. Examples of his paintings are presented throughout the story, and readers learn what influenced the worksat different periods of his life. The author's own cartoons, interpretingevents in the story, are very funny. Both big and small kids love them. Product Description
For readers who have little time to spare and are averse to art-world jargon, this series aims to provide an entertaining guide to individual artists and pop culture. Each volume presents an account of the artist's life, personal and professional anecdotes, concise definitions of cultural and social movements that shaped the artist's work, and colour reproductions. This study of the American realist Edward Hopper discusses why his paintings can leave viewers feeling lonely and alienated; why his art can seem familiar, yet elusive; why he was smitten with films, sex and car travel; and why so many women in Hopper's paintings look alike.Amazon.com Review
"Eerie silence, desolate houses, and blank-eyed individualswith frozen faces, stunned and fixed in time. Cold sunlight from somemysterious, otherworldly source. Unmoving bodies drained of passionand lonely people staring nowhere," writes author Justin Spring on thefirst page of this pocket-sized guide to one of America's favoriterealist painters. "Welcome to Hopper's world."

Hopper's landscapes and interiors have affected everyone from noirfilm directors to the abstract expressionists. His paintings conveyingthe loneliness of contemporary life were painfully apt in the 1930sduring the Great Depression--and they are still meaningfultoday. This book, one of the Essentials series of art books that offerthe reader a quick and easy grounding in the work of a single artist,is also a surprisingly deep work thanks to the author. Spring can takea marriage like Edward and Jo Hopper's, which other writers haveviewed as monumentally dysfunctional, and find what was good andenduring in it. He has a perfect grasp of Hopper's beauty as well ashis strangeness, his voyeurism and his insistence on privacy, hisasceticism, his love of culture, and his wanderlust. Spring also givesreaders telling glimpses of scores of famous paintings, such asNighthawks and A Woman in the Sun. Quoting Jo's noteabout the latter: "Cigarette and sad face of woman unlit." This is anexcellent introduction to the art and the artist. --PeggyMoorman ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars small, yet informative...
... but more about the artist and less about the art.Basically the abbreviated "Cliff's Notes" version of who Edward Hopper was and what constituted his work. The pictures are tiny and do little justice tothe incredible artist that he was.If you want an introduction to theartist and his work, this book is sufficient, but not highly recommended. If you truly want to "know" Edward Hopper, check out any numberof books by the current foremost authority on Hopper, Gail Levin, or anylarger scale reproduction catalog of his work.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little book with a lot of Hopper
Pocket-sized introduction to Edward Hopper from Abrams via Andrews McMeel Publishing, one of a series that includes Dali, Pollock, Van Gogh & others. Features a fine biographical essay by Justin Spring plus manyillustrations, critiques & sidebar notes. The size of this bookprobably consigns it to the gift item category for someone you know whoowns a coffee table collection of Hopper's works or who just enjoys artsypresents, which is unfortunate. A version of this book with larger printswould be quite good.

This book is great edition to any art history library. Wonderfully written, concise and very detailed and interesting. A true find at a valued price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Skip It
To be frank, this book is nothing special. There are a few paintings rarely seen, but overall the book is largely derivative.Berkow failed to harness the magic of Hopper's paintings in the text, resulting in a dull read with far too many `details' from paintings.Considering Hopper's utilization of tight cropping, details seem rather pointless, especially since they were magnified to the point that quality suffered significantly. Additionally, several of the works mentioned weren't even pictured. Some reproductions were even mirror images!Given such blatant mistakes, it's hard to put any amount of faith into this book. ... Product Description
This monograph discusses the relationship between Edward Hopper's sketches for his 1943 painting Hotel Lobby and the finished work. It examines and analyzes both the composition and subject matter in the light of Hopper's goal of expressing himself through his art. It also addresses the possibility that the artist s choice of subject reflects the conflicts that existed in his personal life. This is the first book devoted entirely to a comparison of Hopper s sketches with his finished canvases and should add to the understanding of his working methods. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rare Look Inside an Artist's Method
This is actually a paperback book and although small in page numbers it is large on information. It takes an in depth look at a single painting, how it was created and what motivated Edward Hopper to paint it.The book, which actually accompanies an exhibition of similar title at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, offers a short version of Hopper's career and then launches into how the artist's painting "Hotel Lobby" was created. There are comparison images with other artists, an overview of the 10 sketches made for the painting, and a discussion of how Hopper progressed from what may have been an actual hotel lobby to the finished canvas. Also included is a laboratory examination of the painting and an look at how Hopper used perspective in this work. Although written by a museum curator, it is not pedantic. The book is easy and enjoyable to read and gives great insight into the way Hopper's personal life may have affected his choice of subject matter. It is rare to find a book that discusses Hopper's work through his sketches. If you like this great American artist's paintings and want to know more about their creation, you are going to love this book. Although it focuses on just one painting, the discussion can be applied to much of Hopper's work.It is, of course, much more enjoyable a read if you can see the painting in person, but even if that is not possible you will certainly come away with a fresh view of Edward Hopper and his work. ...
