Excerpt: Eliza Tibbets (1825 - 1898), along with her husband Luther C. Tibbets, is known as the founder of the citrus production industry in California. In 1873 she convinced William Saunders, Superintendent of the fledgling Bureau of Agriculture, to make her a test grower for his new seedless oranges from Bahia, Brazil. By planting and nurturing the orange trees that Saunders sent her, Tibbets revolutionized the citrus industry. Introduction of these oranges, later called the Washington Navel Orange, proved to be the most successful experiment of Saunders tenure, and one of the outstanding events in the economic and social development of California. For the next 60 years and more, a great industry was built up from the two small trees planted by Eliza Tibbets. Born in Cincinnati on August 5, 1825 Eliza Maria Lovell was the youngest child of Oliver and Clarissa Downes Lovell. Pioneers to early Ohio, the Lovells had come to Cincinnati from Boston in 1812, first by covered wagon, then by Ark. The Lovell family quickly became prominent in the frontier town. Excerpt:Angel De Cora Dietz was a Winnebago painter, illustrator, Native American rights advocate, and teacher at Carlisle Indian School . She was the best known Native American artist before World War I . Background Angel De Cora Dietz (1871-1919), or Hinook-Mahiwi-Kalinaka (Fleecy Cloud Floating in Place), was born at the Winnebago Agency in Dakota County (now Thurston), Nebraska, on May 3, the daughter of David Tall Decora, a Winnebago of French ancestry. Her mother was a member of the influential LaMere family. Career Angel was played an important role in the turn-of-the-century, since she exhibited her art to both Native and non-Native audiences. She understanding being Indian, had personally experienced historical trauma of being assimilated and had witnessing genocide. Her understood ancestral historical trauma through the tearing apart of Winnebago families, culture, and land. Still she maintained a strong resilience in life to overcome and flourish. She successfully adapted to the Euro-American culture. Artwork In her art work, Angel De Cora painted firelight to illuminate warm memories of her childhood life on the Nebraska plains after she settled far from home in the east".
