Editorial Review

Product Description

This book traces the visual and conceptual relationships evident in the works of Marcel Duchamp (1887—1968), Joseph Cornell (1903—1972), Jasper Johns (b. 1930), and Robert Rauschenberg (b. 1925). Although scholars have previously explored the biographical contact between these four artists, this is the first close look at the aesthetic consequences of their interactions. Dorothy Kosinski argues for a notion of dialogic exchange rather than influence, noting a number of shared characteristics in these artists’ works including iconography (for example, appropriation of Leonardo’s Mona Lisa), process (assemblage and collage), form (boxes), integration of text into the visual field (sardonic subtitles, nonsense inscriptions, etc.), and shared fascination with simple machines.

Featuring around 50 major works by these pivotal artists, including Duchamp’s Green Box and Johns’s Device, Dialogues reveals the complex and rich exchange manifested in their art.

One of the leading proponents of the Pop Art movement, Jasper Johns culled his source material from popular culture with a preoccupation for the enigmatic character of everyday objects, language and numeric systems. This modest volume reviews the artist's broad career via his works on paper and plastic, surveying 30 objects spanning the years 1955-2001, charting his interests, techniques and aesthetic evolution.Edited by Diana Murphy.~Essay by Mark Rosenthal.~Foreword by Louisa Stude Sarofim.Paperback, 9 x 11.75 in./80 pgs / 30 color 8 BW0 duotone 0 ~ Item D20074 ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Taking up one of the basic issues raised by modern awareness of religious pluralism, John F. Kane examines and criticizes the idea that differing religions could be equally true. He focuses on Karl Jasper's analysis of the symbolic character of religious truth as one major example of a widely accepted way of explaining the possibility of a plurality of true religions. The inadequacies of Jasper's approach are seen as instructive for future efforts to wrestle with the problem of pluralism and truth. ... Read more

Help Wanted: MAGISTRATE

Shift work; evening, weekend, and holiday hours required. Serves asjudicial officer at various police stations. Apply Room 102, AdultDetention Center.

That's an ad you don't see in the help wanted columns every day. Butthere it was, alphabetically between laborers and maids. A verycurious ad indeed.

John Jasper mulled it over for a while and reread the ad a few moretimes. He was intrigued, but he was also a little suspicious. In theback of his mind was the thought that there was a scam occurring inroom 102. Then again, it was the Adult Detention Center, so it had tobe legitimate, didn't it? There was only one sure way to find out. Sooff he went, seeking room 102.

Such moments change people's lives, and John Jasper's life was foreverchanged when he became a magistrate of the Commonwealth ofVirginia. He was taught the job the same way he had learned to swim insummer camp -- they threw him off the dock into deep water. But thistime, in addition to deep, it was also strange and mysterious water.

Along the way, he was told that everybody lies, and everybody knowsit.

The magistrate's job, he discovered, is to figure out what happened, not who's telling the truth. Since everybody's lying, nobody's tellingthe truth, so determining what actually happened is what's important.

Join John Jasper in a sometimes exasperating but unfailingly hilariousromp through Virginia's criminal justice system. You'll discover thefunniest (and sometimes saddest) "out takes" the magistrate's officehas to offer.

Here's a sampling of chapter titles: "He's Deaf, I'm Chinese", "'Y' isfor Asian", "Combat Boots and a Mini-skirt", "A Jerk, a Parakeet, andan Iranian", "A Rocket Scientist", "'Z' is for Allute", "DWI -- TooDrunk to Walk", and our personal favorite, "The Finger." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A mix of "COPS" and "Night Court."
A collection of anecdotes, told by a real magistrate in Virginia which is at times poignant, funny, and distressing.Oh, the trouble some people have just getting on in life! The author describes what he deals with dayin and day out, sharing his values and conclusions.I highly recommendthis book to anyone, as it is both entertaining and educational.Would beexcellent gift for high school or college students thinking about careersin social services or law.

5-0 out of 5 stars Witty and humorous, yet painfully real. Great reading.
The author's self-effacing style brought a reality to the situations that made me feel like I was there experiencing the insanity, fumbling along with him in search of a valid assessment of impassioned criminalcomplaints. The quick pace, wit and humor kept my interest such that Ididn't put it down until I was done. The book gives a base working levelpicture of the front end of the criminal justice system in the Commonwealthof Virginia from the perspective of an individual (The Magistrate) who isinterviewing cops as well as suspects and witnesses hot from the"scene of the crime" before they have had time to reflect on andorganize their stories for their own benefit. It is a great study on thedevious side of human nature as it applies to suspects, witnesses andvictims weaving a tangled web to try to save their hides or punish theirenemies. It is a window inside a government bureaucracy as viewed candidlyby a bureaucrat that is still clinging to a conscience and a heart. Thisbook is stimulating, amusing, emotional yet easy reading. I can see it as abest seller when it is discovered.

5-0 out of 5 stars G R E A TR E A D! ! !
I've already ordered them as Christmas gifts. Certainly one of the most interesting, and well written, paperbacks this year. Sure to be a best seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars Want someone arrested?Go tell it to the magistrate!
Want someone arrested? But the police won't do it? In Virginia, you go to the County Magistrate (used be called Justices of the Peace) and tellyour story under oath. If you are the victim of a crime, and your sworntestimony doesn't veer too far from the truth, the magistrate will issue anarrest warrant and you will get your day in court. After 15 years as acounty magistrate, and after hearing thousands of stories, John Jasper hasdiscovered that no one tells 'the whole truth and nothing but the truth'.We all lie, some of us are damn liars, and it's his job to get behind thelies as quickly as possible and winnow the truth out of the strongemotional stew presented to him in the guise of testimony. Oh, and it'salso his job to issue search and arrest warrants requested by the police, interview drunken drivers and spouse beaters and drug dealers brought in bythe police to determine if they wait for trial in jail or on bail, and toalso try to solve heartbreaking problems brought to him by citizens whoreally need the advice of Solomon and the protection of Superman. You willread stories here, first told in the basement of the county jail, whichwill make you laugh, make you cry, make you angry, make you smile. Theywill also leave you, as they have left John Jasper, very wary of thejudicial process in the county, the state, and the USA. ... Read more
