Excerpt: Thomas Cowperthwait Eakins (July 25, 1844 - June 25, 1916) was an American realist painter, photographer, sculptor, and fine arts educator. He is widely acknowledged to be one of the most important artists in American art history. For the length of his professional career, from the early 1870s until his health began to fail some forty years later, Eakins worked exactingly from life, choosing as his subject the people of his hometown of Philadelphia. He painted several hundred portraits, usually of friends, family members, or prominent people in the arts, sciences, medicine, and clergy. Taken en masse, the portraits offer an overview of the intellectual life of Philadelphia in the late 19th and early 20...http://booksllc.net/?id=102300 ... Read more

Product Description
This ART/new york program looks at the art worlds most recent enfant terrible, JEFF KOONS. Koons polished polychromed wood and porcelain figurines draw on our popular culture and kitchy imagery in order to confound, confuse and ultimately seduce the general populace as well as the intellectual art world. Views of Koons controversial 1989 exhibition at the Sonnabend Gallery in New York City are intercut with an extended interview with the artist, who declares that True liberation for the artist is outside the art world - - thats where one truly can be free and creative. 28 min. ... Product Description
In This Is Not It, Lynne Tillman's collection of 20 years' worth of important and compelling short stories and novellas, the protagonists seduce you into their lives and thoughts. Engaging, funny, elegant, and ironic, Tillman takes the reader to new heights of wit and meaning through staccato phrases, grammatical twists, and sensuous language. Familiar worlds of honesty, deceit, dark humor, pleasure, pain, confusion, dependence, love, and lust each play decisive roles in her believable fictions. In "Come and Go," three characters and an author collide. In "Pleasure Isn't A Pretty Picture," the reader is treated to a he/she meditation on the one-night stand. And "Dead Sleep" is truly an insomniac's worst nightmare.
A twin act on a double bill, This Is Not It is a collection of innovative and stand-alone writing that also engages and matches wits with the some of the best contemporary art: work by Kiki Smith, Jane Dickson, Jessica Stockholder, Diller & Scofidio, Laura Letinsky, Peter Dreher, Roni Horn, Stephen Ellis, Juan Munoz, Vik Muniz, Silvia Kolbowski, Jeff Koons, James Welling, Aura Rosenberg, Barbara Ess, Barbara Kruger, Dolores Marat, Haim Steinbach, Gary Schneider, Marco Breuer, Stephen Prina, and Linder Sterling. Since 1982, acclaimed novelist Tillman has created these unique narratives that are a parallel universe to the contemporary art world. Maybe they're analogues or dialogues, maybe fictions inspired by art, maybe reflections, or meditations--but whatever they're called, like Borges's fictions, they are their own worlds, too. Tillman has marked out terrain of her own, which this collection celebrates. Full of life and art, This Is Not It is illuminating, bold, subtle, and riotous.

Like an acupuncturist, Lynne Tillman knows the precise points into which to sink her delicate probes. --Edmund White
Lynne Tillman's writing uncovers hidden truths, reveals the unnameable, and leads us into her personal world of pain, pleasure, laughter, fear, and confusion, with a clarity of style that is both remarkable and exhilarating. Honest. Simple. Deep. Authentic. Daring . . . To read her is, in a sense, to become alive, because she lives so thoroughly in her work. Lynne Tillman is, quite simply, one of the best writers alive today. --John Zorn
Literature is a quirky thing and just when you start to believe it actually has been used up, along comes a writer, Lynne Tillman, whose work is so striking and original it transforms the way you see the world, the way you think about and interact with your surroundings . . . . --Los Angeles Reader ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Bold and engaging ...
... probing and daring, Tillman moves beyond expectancy, to formulate an honest look into how we collect our thoughts, our selves, as well as how we loose track of them ... with fluid and brilliant flashes of wit, charm, and insight throughout, it's worth a good go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Joyride
...through a unique vision of the world we're struggling to be in - through the alternation of worlds. A glimpse into the nature of things, situation, and people. Precise sentiments. Bold language. Innovative forms. Rewarding for young writers and readers who enjoy variety in literature. Leave this book alone though if you're used to more traditional stuff - not that everyone would like Lynne Tillman. ... Read more

Product Description
Damien Hirst's Alone Yet Together, a pseudoscientific installation of fish suspended in formaldehyde in small, identical glass boxes, graces the cover of this volume. As the singular image selected to represent the Pisces Collection, it demands some exploration of wordplay. Pisces is, after all, the zoological term for fish and also the name of a zodiac sign--the astrological sign, as it happens, of the collection's anonymous owner. Devoted to contemporary art from the 1980s onward, the Pisces Collection takes not an encyclopedic approach but a focused one, concentrating on representing the work of a relatively small group of artists in depth. For the first time, 150 pieces from this very valuable collection are presented to the international public, featuring work by John M. Armleder, Ross Bleckner, George Condo, Wim Delvoye, Fischli & Weiss, Sylvie Fleury, Andreas Gursky, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Paul McCarthy, Mariko Mori, Jack Pierson, Richard Prince, Ugo Rondinone, Thomas Ruff, David Salle, Cindy Sherman, Thomas Struth, Rosemarie Trockel, Franz West, and Christopher Wool. Highlights from the 80s include Prince's My Name and Koons's Encased Five Rows; the 90s are represented through photographic works by Sherman and Gursky, alongside Struths's Paradise 2 (Pilgrim Sands). Hirst's Something solid beneath the surface of several creatures great and small, with its use of live and dead animals, is one of the collection's more controversial pieces.Artists Include: Andreas Gursky, Paul McCarthy, Jeff Koons, Margrit Brehm, Franz West, , Rosemarie Trockel, John M. Armleder, Ross Bleckner, George Condo, Wim Delvoye, Fischli / Weiss, Sylvie Fleury, Damien Hirst, Thomas Struth, Mariko Mori, Cindy Sherman and Richard Prince amongst others.

Product Description
Within Warhol's Death and Disaster series, the so-called Car Crashes comprise the most numerous and diverse set of images. As Gerard Malanga writes in his accompanying essay, "We would return to this silkscreen again and again for several months; in effect, the first painting repeated many times over, this initiating Andy's serial imagery on separate identically shaped canvases, and anticipating the Flower paintings to come."The book also includes a contemporary interview between Malanga and Jeff Koonsas well as a reprint of an interview between Malanga and Warhol from 1963. When we were making the 5 Deaths paintings, with the car upside down and the people underneath, Andy asked, "Are they still alive?" as if the accident had actually occurred in front of us.--Gerard Malanga

5-0 out of 5 stars Art as a repetitive accident
This is a high-quality catalogue on a small Warhol exhibition held in a commercial gallery that focused on one of the artist's Death and Disaster series, depicting a car accident scene. The illustrations accurately show Warhol's mastery of color and the mechanization, dehumanizing effect the repetition of the same scene (albeit a horrific one)in an endless variety of colors and formats can have on the viewer.

An interesting conversation between artist Jeff Koons andWarhol's long-time friend Gerard Malanga helps the reader understand the artist's goal, ideas and creative process. ... Read more
