Product Description
Mackintosh's only known writings on architecture comprise six lecture scripts and a diary, reproduced in full. They illuminate the roots of his genius in unexpected ways and give insight into both his respect for tradition and his passionate commitment to creative independence. Essays by established experts in the field introduce the texts, and illustrations include many previously unpublished or inaccessible Mackintosh drawings. ... Read more

Product Description
This study presents a record of Hill House, one of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's domestic masterpieces which underwent substantial renovation in 1992. The house combines Arts and Crafts honesty with Art Nouveau decoration and the ruggedness of a 17th-century Scottish laird's home. Built for the publisher Blackie, Mackintosh designed not only the house with its fixtures and fittings, but also the outbuildings, garden gates, walls, terraces and pergolas - all as part of a unified aesthetic conception. Charles Rennie Mackintosh is regarded as the most inspired of British Arts and Crafts architects and is now recognized as a pioneer of the Modern Movement. An outstanding furniture designer and painter, as well as an architect, Mackintosh was feted abroad - especially by the Viennese Secession - whilst remaining largely unrecognized in Britain. James Macaulay has also written "The Gothic Revival 1745-1845". ... Read more

Product Description
The Glasgow style of decorative arts evolved in the 1890s at the Glasgow School of Art, from influences begun by the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movements in Great Britain. It was characterized by the juxtaposion of elongated verticals and sensuous bright, light, feminine designs, such as the rose, butterfly, peacock, singing birds, circles, crescents, and teardrop shapes. The text explains the meanings of each motif. Biographies of 20 influential artists in the Glasgow style include Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Herbert McNair, Margaret Macdonald, and Frances Macdonald, Their broad spectrum of designs, shown here in over 530 beautiful color photographs, covered walls, furniture, metalwork, jewelry, embroidery, textiles, dress, pottery, stained glass, and book illustration. Their goal was to support themselves by creating useful decorative arts that presented their new aesthetic. Today, Glasgow style decorative arts are avidly collected and cherished for their originality and handsome decor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Focuses upon a decorative arts movement that is applied to a distinctive style
Arts and crafts movements are categorized and named to distinguish their history and evolution. "The Glascow Style" by Laura Euler focuses upon a decorative arts movement that is applied to a distinctive style associated with such diversity of materials and objects as textiles, dress, pottery, furniture, metalwork, jewelry, embroidery, book illustration, stained glass, and more. The values of these objects (always subject to their condition) can range from a few dollars for a book to millions of dollars for a desk. Profusely and handsomely illustrated with 530 color and black-white photographs, "The Glascow Style" also provides item values, as well as biographical information on many of the men and women whose artistic endeavors are collectively associated with the Glascow arts and crafts movement. With its informed and informative text so beautifully augmented with stunning, diverse, representative examples of the spectrum of objects decorated in this distinctive mode, "The Glascow Style" is a welcome and highly prized addition to personal, professional, community, and academic library Antiques and Collectibles reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite Glasgow Style book ever!
I have been interested in this art movement for many years, and own several books on the subject.Euler's is by far my favorite. The pictures are gorgeous. The prose is eminently readable, and entertaining- which is rare in an art history book! The author clearly knows -and loves- her subject.I look forward to reading any further books Euler chooses to grace us with.

5-0 out of 5 stars A stunningly beautiful and comprehensive work
For anyone interested in the Arts & Crafts movement, especially English (and Scottish) Arts & Crafts, this is an essential addition to any library. Most people associate the Scottish School with Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and this book certainly covers his work, but unlike other books, this one explores many other designers, painters, illustrators, architects and others less well known.A perfect gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye candy and more
This beautiful book is worth buying for the pictures alone and it's also very informative. My interest in the decorative arts is only casual but I'm finding The Glasgow Style really absorbing because the author obviously loves the subject matter and has done a wonderful job of making her extensive knowledge accessible, entertaining, and instructive. ... Product Description
This volume concentrates on the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, influential Scottish architect, artist and designer, who painted flowers and plants prolifically throughout his career. It traces the development of his botanical studies from the early pencil sketchbook drawings, through the introduction of watercolour in the early 1900s, culminating in the Suffolk group of 1914 to 1915, and concluding with the studies from France of 1923 to 1927. The book also considers the work of contemporary symbolists, the evident influence of Japanese floral art, the European botanical tradition and early herbals. It also looks at the use of plant forms as decorative and formal sources for his design work in architecture, furniture, interiors, textiles and graphics, most notably his use of the rose as a design theme throughout his work. ... Editorial Review

Product Description

Charles Rennie Mackintosh is established in the Scottish iconography as an architect of originality, a designer of genius and a painter of exceptional quality. He is, however, an enigma as a man. This Victorian Glaswegian made his way through the art scene at the end of the nineteenth century to become a famous figure in his own time and a legend today. A prophet is not without honour save in his own country, and this was certainly true of Mackintosh who managed to annoy, offend and enrage the architectural establishment of his day to an extent that he turned his back on his own city and went willingly into exile to England, and finally to France. In all of this, he was unfailingly supported by a fellow-artist and co-worker, Margaret Macdonald. They were often a test to each other, but each protected the others vulnerability. Their love story through challenging times is one of the great sagas of art history. This is the life of an ordinary Glasgow man with extraordinary talent, a great love story with personal complications, professional conflicts, triumphs and disasters and an engulfing tragic ending.

2-0 out of 5 stars An enigma within a poorly written biography
As the dust jacket to this book says, Charles Rennie Mackintosh was an architect and artist of brilliance whose character remains an enigma. Cairney is described as a writer, actor and painter. I hope he's better at the last two. His stated aim, to find Mackintosh's "presence",is not achieved except where that presence shines through contemporary accounts, because the book is cluttered with baseless assertions, cliches, anachronistic assumptions and simple mistakes. This book's main merit is that it collects most (not all) the known written as well as some oral sources about Mackintosh (unfortunately not properly referenced). But it's irritating to read and it leaves as many questions as it answers. ... Read more
