Product Description
Together with the National Library of Ireland, Architectural Press presents seventy previously unpublished drawings by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

The identification in the National Library of Ireland of three sketchbooks, from which these drawings have been selected, represents a significant addition to the body of early drawings by Mackintosh. The sketches date from a crucial period in the young man's development, spanning his highly successful student years and the beginnings of his professional career. Each of the three sketchbooks covers an area central to his growth as an artist: the architecture of his native Scotland, an important scholarship journey in Italy and, Mackintosh's first love and greatest influence, the study of plants and growing things.

Essentially private, these little known and unique works provide privileged access to significant moments in the artist's intellectual and emotional life. In this book Elaine Grogan attempts to take them out of the library display-case and bring them to life in the hands of the reader. She invites us to look over Mackintosh's shoulder on his early tentative steps towards fulfilment as a creative genius. Connections are traced, both backwards in time to his training and forwards to his great successes and eventual bitter eclipse.

* Gain a new understanding of a crucial period in Charles Rennie Mackintosh's development through these unpublished sketches
* Connect his sketch books of Scotland, Italy and botany to later great works
* Be inspired by these private, yet significant sketches ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mackintosh Beginnings
This is a great book for those interested the evolution of the architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It shows a great assortment of sketches from early traveling years to his genesis explorations of the natural (arts and crafts) in the abstracted stylized botanical sketches toward the end of the book. The book also shows a glimpse into the eye of mackintosh, through hisvernacular studies of castles and towers.
The format is that of an art book, displaying the sketches with very little explaination, but this book would be a great resource to those who appreciate the life and work of Mackintosh. ... Read more

Product Description
In 1896, Kate Cranston, the pioneer of Glasgow tea rooms in the late nineteenth century, commissioned Charles Rennie Mackintosh—who would become one of the Western worlds’ most renowned designers—to design her tea rooms, and over the next two decades he did so with dazzling inventiveness. (Mackintosh’s wife, Margaret, herself an artist, also made important contributions to the interior designs.) Cranston and Mackintosh opened up a unique, avant-garde artistic world to thousands of ordinary people and their tea rooms became internationally famous. Taking Tea with Mackintosh illustrates their exciting collaboration with black-and-white historical photographs of the tea rooms and color photographs of their surviving components. In addition, sixteen recipes for traditional tea room cakes, breads, and pastries are supplied, offering the best chance the reader will have to revisit these extraordinary places.

Product Description
When Charles Rennie Mackintosh (Scottish, 1868-1928) left Glasgow and settled in London, he began creating designs for fine fabrics, many of which he sold to Foxton s and Sefton's, at the time England's two leading textile producers. Having proved himself a master at designing modern buildings enriched with curves, organic geometry, and repeated motifs, Mackintosh applied those visual themes to two-dimensional design. The images adapted for reproduction in this calendar--including designs for fabrics and leaded glass--demonstrate the range of the great Scottish architect's visual repertoire.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great chronological history....
....of both the man and his work. His story is told form the beginning and includes all his major art forms and projects.
It demonstrates his stunning vision gloriously and tell us of the Glasgow School with great sympathy and does not overlook the important contribution of the other Glasgow four, including Mackintosh's wife and her sister. The fact that this a "Broad Sheet" style book adds to attraction, the pictures are stunning.
A great homage to a great man and a great movement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Taschen excellence!
As usual Taschen gives good value! This was the first book I read about C. R. Mackintosh, which is indeed an amazing character, and one of the initiators of modernism. I ended up travelling to Glasgow to see some ofMackintosh fascinating interiors and buildings. Go there! The book iseasily read, with gorgious pictures, and a good introduction. By the sameauthors, I also recommand "20th century design", which I believeis going to be published in the States in a short while. ... Read more

Product Description
In a career of only twenty-five years, Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed well over 300 pieces of furniture, the majority in two relatively short periods, 1897-1905 and 1916-1919. This book gives an unprecedented overview of Mackintosh's body of work and illustrates*with over 400 photographs*all of his major pieces as well as the interiors for which they were produced. The range of works presented here is quite remarkable, featuring not only the elongated chairs for which Mackintosh is most remembered, but also tables, bookcases, beds, bathroom fittings, and even a pulpit and an organ. The pieces here range stylistically from the more routine late-Victorian pieces of his earliest period, through the white-painted OEpook School' furniture of 1901-03, to the geometrical severity of Mackintosh's work for W.J. Bassett-Lowke in 1916-19. Mackintosh Furniture is a comprehensive look at a designer whose influence has only recently begun to fully realize itself, and is a must for both students and aficionados of design. ... Read more

"At the turn of the century, young architects and designers in Europe and North America were searching for a new vocabulary to express their ideas and aims for the new century. None achieved this more readily than a young man from Glasgow who may have been Scotland's finest architect and designer in his own time and beyond.

A leader in the Art Nouveau movement, Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) won international acclaim for his architectural, interior, furniture, and textile creations. The designs gracing the pages of this journal are a selection of adaptations from Mackintosh's signature high-backed chairs and stencils.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Much has been written about Charles Rennie Mackintosh, his life and work. This book attempts to decipher the meaning of the symbols and decoration in Mackintosh's art and that of many of his contemporaries, both in Glasgow and abroad. The book places the work of the Glasgow Four in the philosophical and religious framework which inspired it. Herbert MacNair, the last survivor of the Four, described the group's early water-colours as being essentially dependent on symbolism not a line was drawn without a purpose and rarely was a single motif employed that had not some allegorical meaning. This being so, it is surprising that the work of the Mackintosh group, despite enormous recent interest, remains, in general, unexplored. This book gives new importance to the contribution of Mackintosh's wife to his art. It documents a dramatic story of lifelong loves and enmities. Equal prominence is given to ancient belief and modern ideas, to clan tradition and Rosicrucian philosophy, physical sexuality and moral vision. It is a book of insights which places "vision" at the core of the Mackintosh phenomenon. This book documents an extraordinary story of the high spiritual ideals of four young Glaswegians who played a strong central role in the development of modern art across Europe. ...
