Product Description
John Everett Millais is admired as one of the most celebrated of Pre-Raphaelite painters. Perhaps less known is the major contribution he made both to book and periodical illustration between 1852 and 1883. Many of his illustrations remain little known, largely due to the fact that they are scattered in obscure books and periodicals. This text brings together over 300 examples of his illustrations, enabling this major part of his oeuvre to be appreciated. ... Read more

Product Description

Reprinted for the first time since 1889, this is the first biography and considered appraisal of one of England’s most prodigiously talented painters. Sir John Everett Millais, P. R. A. (1829–1896) was the most precociously talented artist England has ever produced. His astonishing facility gained him entry as the Royal Academy’s youngest ever pupil. At just 19 he founded with six other painters the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, which revolutionized the English art world with a visionary intensity of both subject matter and style. Millais was its most creative member; as Jason Rosenfeld says in the introduction to this volume, "the sheer quality and distinctness of each of Millais’s paintings of the 1850s is unmatched by any Western artist of the period." Yet there is much more to Millais’ career than Pre-Raphaelitism. Some of the most emotive narrative paintings of the Victorian era, its greatest portraits, and especially some of its most beautiful, if neglected, landscapes, came from his brush—as did some of its most notoriously successful paintings, like Bubbles, the "fancy picture" that was made into an advertisement for Pears’ Soap. This volume includes not only Millais’s only published work of art criticism, the pithy Thoughts on Our Art of Today, but also the first extended biography and appraisal of his work by the important critic M. H. Spielmann. This hugely engaging Sketch gives both a warm and personal picture of the man and a level-headed evaluation of the qualities—and defects—of his work as they appeared to contemporaries. Neither essay has been in print for more than a century.

Product Description
The long and stellar career of John Everett Millais (1829-1896) has been framed in terms of his rise to notoriety as an original member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood followed by a compromising descent into comfortable success as a popular painter and leading figure in the Royal Academy. But this dismissal of Millais's post-Raphaelite work overlooks more than forty years of artistic endeavor and distinction. In this book, nine scholars reexamine Millais's entire career from a variety of perspectives, arriving at a new vision of his place in the history of British art and finding that fame and recognition did not represent the end of this important Victorian artist's development. The contributors consider the whole fabric of Millais's work, seeking the patterns of continuity through his career. They acknowledge the significance of Millais's association with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood yet place that brief phase into the context of his entire body of work. Exploring such topics as Millais's position among contemporary artists; his active interests in theater, literature, and science; his life-long love of nature; his role as a celebrity and a popular artist; and his enduring fascination with the poignant specter of mortality, the book presents a portrait of Millais not limited by the parameters of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. It is a portrait of a supremely gifted artist, a rival of Frederic Leighton, and a counterpart to Alfred Lord Tennyson. ... Read more

Product Description
Among the notorious Victorian artists who called themselves Pre-Raphaelites, the most renowned was John Everett Millais. A fascinating, wonderfully diverse individual, he knew nearly "everybody who was anybody." Well-honored by his peers, he was, for forty years, Britain's most popular artist. The350 paintings he produced displayed their creator's remarkable versatility: Millais was a master of historical, mythological, Biblical, and literary subjects as well as landscapes and portraits. Astonishingly, there has been no full-length biography of Millais for a hundred years, so much of G.H. Fleming's material has never before appeared in a book. This vivid, authoritative portrait is a long-overdue contribution to art history. G.H. Fleming, an authority on the Victorian period, is the author of nine books, including Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Young Whistler, and Whistler: A Life. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars LOADED WITH WONDERFUL INFORMATION
I would highly recommend this book on John Everett Millais for anyone who has an interest in the life of this incredibly talented painter. From his early induction into the Royal Academy to his death, this book seems to uncover every aspectimaginable, be it good reviews or bad. I could not put it down. My only disappointment is that the photos of his work are all in black and white. I am not a scholar, but a layman with a keen interest in learning of the man behind such outstanding pieces as My First Sermon. I will read this book again and again, it is that interesting. ...
