3-0 out of 5 stars Monet A Retrospective
This book came water damaged from the supplier. It is ok but not to the level that I expected. It did not have several of the paintings that I was looking for such as the irises which is world famous. Also it did not have the painting showing the red boats in the harbour, another famous painting.I did order another book on Monet's gardens which was considerably better.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good in parts
The book opens with a chronology of about 15 pages and a short introduction. The remainder of the text comprises a vast array of contemporary reports and commentaries on Monet from news media and other sources by a numerous writers. These do make fascinating reading; the wide range of writers includes among others critics, philosophers and statesmen, and among these are some notable names such as Proust, Maupassant and Zola; the comments range from ridicule to praise. They run according the publishers, chronologically from 1865, but that is a very loose description for the sequence is far from consecutive. Usefully reference to colour plates is provided in the margin alongside the relevant text. The book includes an index.

It is illustrated throughout with 132 colour plates and 119 monochromes. The colour reproduction generally is acceptable, but there are a number of images that are noticeably dark with little detail evident in the darkest areas. The monochrome images are not so good; typical of poor quality offset-litho the images are too dark with large areas of solid black entirely lacking detail. The colour plates each occupy a page, although due to the book format some paintings may occupy no more than half the page. This problem has been overcome with a few of the very wide Water Lily paintings by employing fold out pages. A very wide range of Monet's work is covered.

Overall production does not impress, the presentation in some sections is crude, and it is badly let down by the quality of the monochrome images. It is a big and heavy book, and the large format does allow for many of Monet's paintings to be reproduced to a reasonable size; it is worth having for the colour reproductions and the interesting text.

13.25" x 9.75" (33.6 cm x 24.7 cm)Published 1985 ISBN 0883633019 Hardback

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Value With Over 100 Full-Color Plates
Enjoy Monet's greatest works with over 100 full-color plates. In addition to the vivid plates the text is overflowing with wonderful descriptions of his life and work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Own if You Love Monet
This is a large, heavy and durable book that brings you a great portrayal of Claude Monet, with wonderful pictures both in color and black and white, along with interesting and intimate commentary about his life during the time he created his paintings. One of the full color pictures is of "Green Reflections" where the picture is over 27 feet (847 cm) long.

The back of the book has an in depth index of paintings, colleagues, associations, museums, and the names of Monet's paintings.

Highly Recommended for impressionist art lovers. Barbara Rose, author of, `Individual Power' and `If God Was Like Man'

4-0 out of 5 stars It's Grrrreat!!
I saw this book in my local bookstore and immediatly snatched it up! It got a TON of paintings done by Monet, most of them in color. Though theactual biography about him is slim, the articles by past painters, colleagues, and friends are wonderful. Be warned: It's a heafty book, butundoubtedly delightful!! ... Read more

Product Description
In 1868, Claude Monet was desperate. Though he had been painting for a decade, he was living in poverty. He had to support his girlfriend and infant son on his meager earnings. His relatives refused to help him out, so he begged for money from his friends, telling them that his situation seemed hopeless. Yet just over two decades later, with brisk sales through an art dealer, Monet had become wealthy and famous. People came from all over Europe, and even a few from the United States, to visit him. He lived in comfort for the rest of his life. Monet is best known as an Impressionist painter. Impressionism was very different from the art that preceded it. It took years before people accepted it, but today exhibits that feature the works of Monet and other Impressionists are very popular. ... Read more

Product Description
These 40 paintings follow Claude Monet’s progress through years of landscapes, tracking changes in his work and making the case that fields and meadows may have been his most revealing theme. Starting in 1873, Monet began painting the fields around Argenteuil with occasional human subjects--his first wife Camille and their small boy Jean--in close brushwork that brought out a vibrating tension, large-scale liveliness. The series of Seine landscapes upon which he embarked in 1878, around the area of Vétheuil, compared the river’s untouched meadows to that cultivated farmland. Canvases from the spring of 1880 contain a particularly palpable joy on the renewal of the land after a very hard winter. And it was after relocating to Giverny in 1883--a move that coincided with the increasing establishment of the Impressionist movement as the most important development in French art of that era--that Monet painted the work from which this monograph takes its name, his 1887 Fields in Spring, with its crucially austere organization of surfaces and highly systematic palette. It was a turning point in his oeuvre, a mingling of severity and simplification that brought incomparably harmonious effect and the unbroken admiration of his colleagues. This concise study closes with the fascinating paintings of 1894 in which Monet perfected this systematic approach. ... Read more

Product Description

Michelangelo (1475-1564) began his work as an apprentice when he was thirteen. At twenty-four, he carved the Pieta which today stands in St. Peter’s in Rome. From 1408 to 1512, he painted the gigantic fresco that covers the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Twenty-five years later, from 1536 to 1541, he painted The Last Judgement on the wall behind the high altar. Hailed as the greatest artist of all time by the art historian, Vasari, Michelangelo continues to move and amaze through the tremendous energy and sheer beauty of his work.

This conveniently sized edition is ideal for the pockets of young students and older art lovers alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good reproductions, interesting ideas
I am a painter who wanted to do a series of paintings for an upcoming exhibit. I got this book to see if it would stimulate some interesting ideas. Given the plethora of poorly illustrated books on Monet I was pleasantly surprised by the reproductions. A few I had never seen before and others I had never seen with their accompanying series paintings. Most of the reproductions are quite large, which I appreciate, and the colors are rich and seem accurate. I haven't read the text straight through but skimmed various sections and the ideas presented are very stimulating and fill in the gaps regarding Monet's motivations for painting in a series.

If you are a painter who feels drawn to doing series this book will prove invaluable. This book is also my best book of Monet's reproductions (admittedly I am still searching for the ultimate Monet book, one with lots of large, incredible reproductions. If you have any suggestions please let me know). ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars We bought several books in this series before I realized I just don't like them that much
Can't fault the art, it's a great way to introduce kids to Monet.

And the text... well, I can take it or leave it. It sounds trite to my ears, though, so I prefer to leave it.

The really bad part about these books is that they're cheaply made. I've had them fall apart on me while other books that we've had longer and that we read more often are in great shape.

You can't have a poor-quality board book, it just doesn't work.

I can't in good conscience recommend these books to anybody because of that.

Product Description
This stunning book illustrates for the first time the most important collection of Monet's paintings in the world: the works at the Mus,e Marmottan Monet in Paris. It takes the reader on a remarkable journey through Monet's life and work, detailing chronologically the development and themes of Monet's paintings: the landscapes, seascapes, portraits, figures and silhouettes, and the Giverny paintings including the famous water lilies. It also features the work of his contemporaries and friends, including Manet, Degas, Gauguin, Renoir, Caillebotte, Berthe Morisot and many others. It is a fascinating overview of Monet's life, times and work and presents more than 100 works.Originally a hunting lodge bought by Jules Marmottan in 1882 which then became a hotel, the Mus,e Marmottan Monet became a national museum when Paul Marmottan bequeathed his collection of paintings, furniture and bronzes as well as the building to the Academie des Beaux-Arts. It was given its first major work : Monet'sImpression, ... Read more
