Product Description

"My art is rooted in a single reflection: why am I not as others
are?"—Edvard Munch

Published in conjunction with a major exhibit at the McMullen Museum of Art at Boston College, Edvard Munch: Psyche, Symbol and Expression includes nine essays from scholars representing a variety of disciplines. From themes of love, sexuality, gender and anxiety to comparisons with Ibsen and Kierkegaard, the catalog explores the meanings of Munch's imagery, his sources in Symbolist art, and his legacy for German Expressionism within the context of his contemporaries' developments in psychology, literature, and philosophy. The volume of over 200 pages includes more than 60 color plates and 130 black and white illustrations, many from rarely seen private collections and some never exhibited before.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Real Scream
Although the text was a bit more dense than what I'm accustomed to reading, I really enjoyed the perspective that Dr. Wood brought to Munch's life and work. I'll never think of that iconic painting of his--as disturbing as it is unforgettable--in the same way. I have read longer books that have said much less, the read was well worth the time spent. ... Product Description
Many people instantly recognize The Scream, a harrowing painting of a person in pain. It appears on countless posters, T-shirts, and coffee mugs. The main character in the Scream horror movies wears a Halloween mask modeled on the painting. Yet not many people are familiar with the artist, Norwegian painter Edvard Munch. He lost his mother and his sister to tuberculosis; and he was raised by an aunt and his very strict father. With another sister on the verge of mental collapse, Munch became familiar with death and mental anguish at a young age. These feelings are reflected in The Scream and much of his other masterpieces. From his troubles, Munch spawned a new type of art called expressionism and produced over 20,000 pieces. Find out how Munch became one of just a handful of artists who has an entire museum devoted exclusively to his works. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Next Generation
This is the second great monograph to appear in English on the artist, published in 1984, the first of its kind from the Munch Museet, already 20 years after the museum had opened.

This book represents the second monograph to appear in English, after Ragna StangEdvard Munch: The Man And His Art.These two efforts are distinctly different, Eggum's being the comprehensive institutional monograph we have known, whereas Stang was writing independently at the time.Because of the access both of these writers had to the work, without the conflict of copyright payments and so on, they represent the most complete presentations of the artist,(420 plates in Eggum, 360 in Stang), until the recent appearance of the Catalogue Raisonnees on the artist: Edvard Munch: The Complete Graphic WorksGerd Woll; Edvard Munch: Complete Paintings (1,800 Color Paintings) (v. 1-4)Gerd Woll.

Artists always have work in storage at the end of their lives- no one wants it.What is overlooked is that even when the work has commercial value, it is expensive to take care of, especially in a Museum setting.
It is hard to imagine the financial burden the some 20,000 pieces of art left by Edvard Munch to a city the size of Oslo. When I arrived at the Munch Museet in 1966, drawings wre still in stacks in the basement. The museum has worked for decades to unravel this hyper-concentration of works and arfifacts of the artist.

Museum receipts do not cover such an endeavor.Because of this, the Museum has coordinated with the Cultural Affairs section of the Norwegian Embassy to show this work around the world, but especially in English speaking countries, and in America in particular because of the large Scandanavian population here.

The appearance of the work abroad invites people to travel to Norway and see the rich collection that is represented there.

Product Description
This anthology springs out of a productive environment that in recent years has been created in Norway for research into the art of Edvard Munch. Comprising scholars from both the University of Oslo and the Munch Museum, this environment is seeking to internationalise the research and broadening the network of scholars working on Munch's art. The nine essays written by art historians from USA, Germany, Switzerland and Norway shed new light upon different sides of Munch and his art, as well as on the impact he has had in art history. The authors in this anthology are more critical of their sources than has been seen earlier in research on Munch, and their interpretations of works are increasingly based on information that can be documented. A diversity of theory now supplements the traditionally biographical approach. One of the authors describes the process of identifying a formerly unknown Munch painting, Seated nude and three male heads, as well as addressing general problems of dating concerning Munch's oeuvres.Another essay focuses on Munch's portrayals of one of the most radical Norwegian art movements in the late 19th century, Kristianiabohemen, and the importance of this movement for Munch's development as an artist. Through analysis of Munch's paintings the authors also focus on Munch's role in the creation of a national identity, and his perception of the male role in contemporary society. In the last essay of the book it is being argued that Munch and his works have often been better comprehended by other artists than by traditional art historians. The essay shows how certain artists, most of them American such as Jim Dine, Andres Serrano and Elizabeth Jones, have appropriated and developed Munch's pictorial imagination, in independent works or in visual quotations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Far more than just "The Scream"
Munch is best known for his iconic work "The Scream," a work that has been reproduced & parodied countless times since its creation, but which still resonates with emotional power even after such popular saturation. Well, there's a lot more to this artist than just one famous work! This collection of his prints is an excellent introduction to a world of raw feeling laid bare, often swathed in blackness & palpable dread. Munch clearly felt & anticipated the alienation & fear of the 20th (and now 21st) century, depicting it with naked intensity. He delves deeply into the darkest places of the human psyche, making it tangible for all to see, whether they want to or not. This isn't always comforting art, but it's revelatory. A recommended volume! ... Read more

Product Description
The thieves who stole Edvard Munch's The Scream from the Munch Museum in Norway are still at large, but contemporary artists have been borrowing from him for years, as this book shows. Over 50 paintings and graphic works by Munch share a kinship with approximately 50 selected works by 30 contemporary artists. The bowed head of a figure seemingly in mourning in Elizabeth Peyton's Tony Rum Island echoes the posture of a woman in Munch's Das Weinende Mädchen. The vulnerable yet protective pose of a naked girl on a bed in Munch's Puberty gets quoted in the video of the same name from Norwegian artist AK Dolven. Among the other contemporary artists we find here in debt to Munch are Robert Gober, Georg Baselitz, Nan Goldin, Antony Gormley, Jürgen Partenheimer, Louise Bourgeois, Sam Taylor-Wood, Peter Doig, Martin Kippenberger, Paul Winstanley, Erwin Wurm, Tracey Emin, Eric Fischl, and many more.Edited by Rosemarie E.
