Trite poorly written nonsense that has nothing to say about Parrish's art.
I was so tempted to give one star and probably would have if the author didn't stop when she did.

The book has nothing of importance to say, no insights and only the author's opinions with very little to back it up.

If tempted to purchase a book about the art of Parrish, avoid this one as it will disappoint.

Perhaps the photo of the author in a sleeveless black frock and elbow length gloves was warning enough of the calibre of this insipid book.

It is so bad, I wouldn't lend it or give it away. No one deserves to be punished by it.

Very interesting!
I love the artwork and the story behind the art!This book was super interesting to me. Sue Lewin was a beautiful model and whether or not she really was Maxfield's lover really doesn't matter to me, although I really do believe that she was! Too bad that they never made it official.

His model and muse
Sue Lewin was the model for a huge number of Parrish's lovely, romantic paintings. She sat for the innumerable photographs that he used for his paintings, she tended his children, she lived with him for decades in his `studio' (a fair-sized house by any standard). He often painted her with a wedding band on her finger. He just never married her.

Another woman, Lydia, was his wife. For many years, she lived in the other house on the property, almost a mansion. This peculiar split life, wife and mistress on the same estate, just a few yards a way from each other, was a permanent feature of the Parrish household.

It seems to have started innocently enough, when Lewin was hired as nanny and maid to the Parrish household. Parrish had great financial success during his life, enough to build the two grand houses at `The Oaks.' Over time, Lewin became more involved with his art, posing and making costumes, cooking for him and fending off threats to his privacy. At the same time, Parrish became cordially estranged from his wife. There was a curtain of silence around the arrangements, but that is the story told in this remarkable book.

It is clear that Lewin had enormous importance in Parrish's work, far more than hard evidence may ever tell. If you like Parrish's work - and it's easy to like - this brief book will give real insight into the art, the man who made it, and the woman who inspired it. The only disappointment in this book is that it doesn't show more of Parrish's famous illustration.

Beautiful Pictures, But Weak Text
Any book containing attractive reproductions of Maxfield Parrish's work is bound to be visually stunning.But the text is loaded with partially informed speculation about the relationship between Parrish and Sue Lewin,his favorite model. The author is an art dealer, not a historian, and herlack of analytical training is a serious problem. Maybe Lewin was Parrish'slover.But where's the concrete evidence?Everything that the authorpresents to support her contentions is either hearsay or capable of morethan one interpretion. The fact that they shared a house for severaldecades is a VERY persuasive fact, but Gilbert damages her credibility --and her case -- by tossing in too much pointless guessing.

A Fascinating Look into the Life of an Artist & his Subject
Being an admirer of Parrish's work since childhood, I had always wondered how he worked since his paintings had a sort of surreal realism to them. I was surprised to find that he utilized photographs instead of live modelsand that Sue Lewin was the model for the majority of his most famous works.The art is not only beautiful in the book, but the photos are just asincredible as the paintings themselves. great stories, goodperformance
I love fantasy and mythology, and I thought this audiobook would be a good introduction to this classic work in the genre.I found the stories to be very fun and exciting, and the narration added to the experience a whole lot.It's a great way to become acquainted with this wonderful set of tales.

Fun Read

I enjoyed this book, it was actually given to me when I was a child but I didn't get around to reading it until now (I'm 20). I am in college so I make it a point to read classics and it can be kind of stressful because I am trying to get as much as I can out the books. So to me The Arabian Nights was a break from all the pressure.

The only thing that bothered me was that the endings were pretty much the same in all the stories and that is that the main characters all lived happily ever after to ripe old ages.

Flights of Fancy
This version of "The Arabian Nights" is a compilation of ten of the most popular of the stories contained in the original"Tales of a Thousand and One Nights".The original contains two hundred and sixty-four stories.A lovely touch to the Barnes and Noble edition is that they include eight illustrations by Maxfield Parrish.While these stories have been the subject of movies for children, the vocabulary is not exactly for children in the language in the book.The original stories were translated from Arabic into French by M. Galland, a Professor of Arabic in Paris, and then from French into English in several editions.The first manuscript is from 1450 or earlier and the French translation in 1704 became instantly popular.The flights of fantasy are absolutely spectacular and cannot be reproduced in movies as well as the words can do in the readers own brain.Castles, jewels, strange beasts, cannibals, powerful kings and queens and lovely men and women fill the stories that take place in China, India, Persia, Arabia, and on various islands nearby. The Barnes and Noble edition from 1993 contains the following tales: The Talking Bird, The Fisherman and the Genie, The Young King of the Black Isles, Gulnare of the Sea, Aladdin, Prince Agib, The City of Brass, Ali Baba, Codadad, and Sinbad. They are wild exotic stories, that are fun for adults to read also.

Like seeing a print instead of the original painting....
I purchased this book wanting an inexpensive edition of the Arabian Nights.When I saw this edition was illustrated by Maxfield Parrish, I knew this would be a good one.Unfortunately, I can't shake the feeling that I am missing something in this edition.

I know that this is not the full collection of tales.I was disappointed that the editors didn't give us much of the framework that the original was set.There are only ten stories here, and they are not really linked together at all.It is more like reading an anthology than reading a coherent piece of literary work.

I also felt that something was missing in the translations.Although Allah is mentioned, they typically refer to God.Whether this is what the originals stated or if this is how it was translated by western scholars, I don't know.

When I saw this was illustrated by Parrish, I had images of his work throughout the book.Unfortunately, they are grouped together in a couple places with a small quote from the story they represent.Some of the pictures seem like they were created for something else, but looked close enough to work.Although the art is good, it doesn't fit into the book very well.

The flights of fancy are fun and this would be appropriate for children.I don't think adult readers would want this one.

Not the Arabian Nights
While looking through the list of books on mythology, I couldn't help but notice a number of books containing "Arabian Nights" in the title.I hate to burst the bubble of anyone who plans to read this book,but I can tell you immediately that these are not the tales of the ArabianNights.Aladdin was a character added completely from the mind of a French"translator," and Ali Baba and Sinbad are not included in theorignal Arabian Nights.If you want a decent copy of the stories, look forHaddaway's translation.If you want a version of the story appropriate forchildren, tone down the sex and violence, but please stay true to thestory! ... Parrish is one of my favorite artist
I love the art of Maxfield Parrish and this wall calendar hangs in my office.I have people in my office on a daily basis and always receive comments on the colors or interesting artwork of Mr. Parrish.Every year I purchase one of these calendars and will continue.

One of a beautiful series
This book has absolutely beautiful paintings that compliment the familiar song Over the Rainbow.My 5 year old daughter likes it a lot.Her absolute favorite in the series is I Live In Music by Ntozake Shange, which is part of this series, and might seem odd for a pre-schooler, but her whole class really responded to it as well.

Lyrics are wrong at the start
The lyrics at the beginning of the book are incorrect. Most people would not know this, as the lyrics weren't used in The Wizard of Oz. The correct lyric is: "When all the world is a hopeless jumble and the raindrops tumble all around, Heaven opens a magic lane. When all the clouds darken up the skyway there's a rainbow highway to be found, leading from your window pane to a place behind the sun - just a step beyond the rain." The book leaves out the word "highway" - pretty critical to the sense of the lyric and the rhyme. The only reason I know this is that the Seattle Men's Chorus uses "Over the Rainbow" as its theme song, and starts with the beginning of the song - inlcuding the lyric that Judy Garland didn't sing in the film.

Wonderful gift for someone you cherish
Sometimes you don't know what to get a person who has everything.This is it.An art lover to a music lover can appreciate the beauty in this creative interpretation of Over the Rainbow, which is most often associated with Judy Garland and The Wizard of Oz.This would be a great book to show a child that Over the Rainbow exists in an entirely different form than television portrays.

Go for the hardcover and Parrish
The poems in this collection are somewhat old fashioned and in places somewhat sad. I've heard that Mr. Field lost a child and this explains some of the wistfulness and sadness of some of the poems. The poems are sweet without being cloying and reflect a father's delight in childhood and children. My main desire to write this review is to encourage anyone thinking of buying it to buy it in the hardcover edition with the fabulous Maxfield Parrish full color pictures. There are 10 full page color pictures in all and I believe they are unique to this book, as I've only seen a couple of them in collections of Parrish's illustrations. The colors are true--Parrish's color palette was often very subtle. There are some sideways nudes, but these are not distasteful, being handled in a way that illustrates the freedom of youth (The children look nonsexual, as if the sexual parts of their bodies didn't exist). I heartily recommend this book for the gentle poems and the marvelous pictures. So hold out for the hardcover and find one with the Parrish pictures.

Poems of Childhood

Yes, for the love of children
To answer the extremely perseptive reviewer, who seemed to have gotten so much more from this book than any body else besides myself...yes, Eugene Field had a son who died. He wrote a poem about it too, and it is called "Little Boy Blue". My mother used to torture herself reading this poem..and it got so bad she just couldn't any more. This book of poetry is just wonderful. The illustrations by the renown artist Maxfield Parish are a pure delight, a treasure unto themselves.

Touching and memorable.
Some of these poems are for children. Some are merely about children. Some are for grown ups who love children. Some are for children who have no idea how dear they are to the grown ups in their lives.

Despite having had my copy of �Poems of Childhood� for ten years, I know absolutely nothing about Eugene Field save what I can infer from the poems in this collection. From their recurring themes, and the order in which they appear, I can guess that Field lost a child who was very precious to him . . . was slowly healed of his grief by the love and presence of other children . . . and was given a second chance with the birth of a new baby.

There are about 15 poems that hint of that lost child and a handful that juxtapose sleep and death, making me wonder if the baby died in its sleep. Other sad poems are merely wistful about beloved children who have grown up. Thankfully, there are just as many happy poems as sad ones: cheery verses about toys, imaginary creatures, and playground games. Field also wrote several �lullabies� that are perfect for rocking children to sleep, whether or not they are put to music.

I don�t know any other poet who has brought such dignity to "babytalk." Toddlers in his poems are called names like Pittypat, Tippytoe, Googly-Goo and Luddy-Dud. His imaginary fairies include Amberglee, Daisybright and Pilfercurds. Moreover, I�m sure that no other collection of children�s poems has this many terms for "dreamland"--Blinkiwink garden, Shut-Eye town, and Hushaby street, to name a few.

Though Field could be accused of writing the same poems over and over again, most of his verses have such distinctive _personalities_ that this is not entirely true. What they _all_ have in common is his delicate touch--yes, even the ones in which his voice turns rustic and homey--that has endeared him to children and grown ups alike. ... Read more
