5-0 out of 5 stars This is a good book on Camille Pissaro
This is a good book on Camille Pissaro. It's a good source for those interested in the lives of artists.
It shows his work both in color and black and white.
For whatever reason, Pissaro was the first Impressionist that I became interested in.
Not wanting to give up my book, my art instructor (a fellow bibliophile ), asked if I'd order a copy for her. That's what this purchase was, she's very pleased with it.

Joachim Pissarro's commentary interests andinforms the reader without making the volume unduly heavy intellectually. Product Description

Camille Pissarro (1830–1903) was a ceaseless innovator and organizer whose ideological concerns were as profound as his aesthetic interests. Camille Pissarro: Impressions of City and Country examines how Pissarro's artistic theories and social convictions influenced his Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist work.

Pissarro espoused an anti-bourgeois, anarchist ideology and was interested in the plight of the working classes. This book’s authors examine recurring motifs in Pissarro’s work as intellectual metaphors as well as his background as a Sephardic Jew who was involved in many of the political and class issues of the period. The text also looks at Pissarro as a painter who identified with laborers and agriculture, exploring connections between his subject matter and the “dirty” nature of his painterly technique.

Featuring a wide selection of superb paintings from private collections, many rarely seen, this beautifully illustrated book reveals the genius of an artist keenly focused on his natural surroundings and the lives of common folk.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Edited by Christoph Becker. Essays by Christoph Becker, Wolf Eiermann, and Barbara Stern Shapiro.

Studying the effects of light, climate, and the seasons, Camille Pissarro experimented with art theory and technique, and fused a distinctive style that remains his own, within the larger style of Impressionism. He was a master in capturing the atmospheric nuances of changing seasons and times of day: sunrise, morning mist, hoar frost, blossoming trees, and light reflections on water. Working in close friendship with Monet, Cezanne, Renoir, and Degas, Pissarro participated in all Impressionist exhibitions in Paris, and as the oldest of the Impressionists, he was a thought-provoking influence and a source of inspiration. This publication presents Pissarro's oeuvre in all its thematic and artistic diversity. It is a spectrum which extends from the coloristic masterpieces of his early years, especially his landscapes, through to his later, equally famous views of Rouen and Paris, and includes a diversity of subject matter as seen in his portraits, still lifes, market scenes and representations of everyday peasant life. With over 250 illustrations, over 100 in color, this is an exceptional and beautifully designed survey of Pissarro's timeless art. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I'm interested in impressionism. I'm also painting. At first I want to buy this title because Pissarro is one of my favorite impressionist. I want to see all his paintings in full color. But this book emphasis on biography. So I could see sucha little works of him. Very diappointed. I can't do nothing with this book becoz return it back to USA from Thailand takes too much cost.

5-0 out of 5 stars the first impressionist
camille pissarro gets much less notice than many of his contemporaries -- renoir, monet, degas, cezanne, van gogh, sisley -- yet in many ways he's the most interesting and innovative of the lot. born and raised in the caribbean, he emigrated to france as a young adult and worked as a productive (though often near impoverished) artist for five decades. in that time many painting fashions came and went, yet pissarro was often at the forefront of them all. one of the founding impressionists, his paintings were early on more radical than other painters working at the time (his artistic convictions cost him dearly in market success); he befriended and mentored the likes of cezanne, gauguin, signac; he was among the first to apply the science of color vision to his painting, and with much more care and insight than the mechanical dotmaking of the neo-impressionists. his influence was vital to the development of 19th century painting and is brought to life in this well written and comprehensive survey. the many full page color reproductions of his beautiful, sensitive, skillful and continually evolving paintings show the depth of his artistic sentiment and insight. pissarro is a painter who looks better in the perspective of time, and this handsome study does him full justice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Pissaro makes impressionism happen!
This is another good book by Irving Stone, who also gave usMichelangelo in The Agony and the Ecstasy and Van Gogh in Lust for Life, both of which were made into major movies a half-century ago.The movies were good and had great actors, but the books were even better. This book would make a pretty good movie too, probably a psychological drama.

Stone's books are a chance to see great artists up close and behind the scenes.Since he is doing historical fiction, Stone takes you right into Pissaro's home and right up to his canvas as he is working, and right into his conversations with Monet, Renoir, and the rest at the local pubs. You are even in his head as he creates his art, which is a bit risky, but seems to work. You are there at the birth of Impressionism. It was exciting, at least for me, to get close to these legends.

Surprisingly, it was Pissaro who was the prime mover for the Impressionists exhibitions as a means to expose and educate the hostile audience of that day.The word Impressionism was like a dirty word in those days when the public only wanted clearly executed, classical or romantic paintings of such artists as Delacroix or Courbet. It's really hard to imagine today what made the critics and the public so angry in those days. Was it a bad idea to be innovative? Was it worth almost rioting over? What was the deal with being creative or a little different with your expression?

Organizing anything among this wild group of Impressionist bohemians was almost miraculous, but Pissaro possessed exceptional people skills (always a rare quality, then as now) that made it happen. It is very unlikely that anyone else at the time could have done it. At the same time he and his family were living hand-to-mouth, and you have to wonder how his wife put up with him (just barely, I think).

Almost a century after his time, Pissaro finally gets his due, at least in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars my review
This book made me understand the real struggles all impressionist artists had to live with to have their work accepted by the people, and how much they helped each other in their time of need. The author has brought real-life meaning to a story told many times! Brilliantly written. Ienjoyed once again his hard facts and real characters.Irving Stonedefinitely is a master.

Product Description

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was the only member of the Impressionist group to exhibit in all eight of their exhibitions held in Paris between 1874 and 1886. He drafted the Impressionist convention and was the principal organizer of the first exhibition held in 1874. He was a bold and restless experimenter throughout his career, working in a variety of mediums and techniques, including painting, drawing, and printmaking.  Pissarro was also regarded as an astute judge of young talent. Cézanne and Gauguin both acknowledged their profound debt to him, and Seurat, Signac and Matisse also benefited from Pissarro's generous encouragement and advice at the start of their careers.

This beautiful book is the first to examine closely Pissarro’s innovative role in the Impressionist movement and his novel approach to pictorial composition. With 150 stunning color illustrations of many of Pissarro’s greatest works, this comprehensive and accessible book includes five essays written by distinguished scholars that analyze the artist’s exploration of composition and subject matter, his experiments with color and space, and his turn to Neo-Impressionism toward the end of his career. Camille Pissarro also describes his relationships to other contemporary artists, his reception by critics at the time, and his significant influence upon Impressionism and modern art.

Product Description
From the mid-1860s to the mid-1880s two artistic legends, Paul Cezanne and Camille Pissarro, executed numerous paintings side by side as they worked in Pontoise and Auvers. This book was published in conjunction with an exhibition of 74 paintings and 8 drawings that embody the core of the two artists' collaboration and explores their artistic relationship in detail. The artists' dynamic interaction began with their first meeting at the Academie Suisse, Paris, circa 1861, and continued through much of their careers. To examine the techniques that Cezanne and Pissarro each adopted in response to the other's work, the exhibition and book juxtapose related works by both artists, reuniting many of them for the first time since their creation. The friendship between Cezanne and Pissarro was of considerable importance within the development of early Modernism. An essay by Joachim Pissarro discusses this fascinating interchange and offers new insights into both the shared and the distinctive elements of the two artists' aesthetic sensibility. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What an art book should be
This lavishly illustrated book sets a high standard for art books. It features large reproductions of uniformly excellent quality. Each chapter is prefaced by full page close-ups of the work of Pizarro and Cezanne so you can get a real feel for their texture and brushwork. The comparisons are often of the same motif (since Pizarro and Cezanne often painted together). The text is informative without detracting from the importance of the art.

I was never able to appreciate Cezanne until I saw his work side by side with Pizarro's. Pizarro is an honest craftsman with charming color and technique but you can clearly see that Cezanne wanted to push the boundaries of painting quite a bit more and his works are energetic, experimental explorations. I came to appreciate both artists more by reading and absorbing the visual information in this beautiful book.

If you are looking for a book with great reproductions of either Pizarro or Cezanne, get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pizzaro & Cezanne together again!
Wow! This is a book not to be missed for those who love Impressionism and the contrast between two of the greats in a way scarecely ever shown. They were friends - mentor and student - and drew inspiration from each other over the years until the student (Cezanne) finally departed South and became his own (and more famous) man. But oh the beauty of Pizarro's work!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Catalogue of an Important Exhibition: Dialogues of Cezanne and Pissarro
Though this book is a catalogue for an important exhibition traveling to the West Coast after its origin in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, it is so finely produced and contains such important information along with generous examples of the works of two significant artists that it is sure to become a major contribution to the history of art libraries around the world. It is beautiful to peruse, intelligently written and opens a window into one of the more interesting and productive friendships in art history.

Meeting in art school in the 1860's Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) and Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) continued a mutually beneficial camaraderie for twenty years, during which time they produced not only beautiful paintings but also defined an important transitional period in art. While many view Pissarro as the echt-Impressionist, andCézanne as the pioneering Post-Impressionist, essayist Joachim Pissarro's text questions the significance of these preconceivedart history monikers in codifying each artist's stance in the overall view of art history. The true significance in thedevelopment of their friendship and dialogues about art, as captured in their painting together in Pontoise and Auvers, France, lead to the development of Modernism in painting.

Wisely and elegantly designed, this book places works by each artist side by side, illuminating the interplay of the two master painters and allowing the viewer to absorb the similarities as well as thedisparities that created such a powerful dialogue and relationship and explores how each artist sought new ways to express the visualized scene before him. This is a very fine monograph, vividly encouraging all art lovers to seek attendance at the exhibition wherever possible.Grady Harp, October 05

Product Description
Martha Ward tracks the development and reception of neo-impressionism, revealing how the artists and critics of the French art world of the 1880s and 1890s created painting's first modern vanguard movement.

Paying particular attention to the participation of Camille Pissarro, the only older artist to join the otherwise youthful movement, Ward sets the neo-impressionists' individual achievements in the context of a generational struggle to redefine the purposes of painting. She describes the conditions of display, distribution, and interpretation that the neo-impressionists challenged, and explains how these artists sought to circulate their own work outside of the prevailing system. Paintings, Ward argues, often anticipate and respond to their own conditions of display and use, and in the case of the neo-impressionists, the artists' relations to market forces and exhibition spaces had a decisive impact on their art.

Ward details the changes in art dealing, and chronicles how these and new freedoms for the press made artistic vanguardism possible while at the same time affecting the content of painting. She also provides a nuanced account of the neo-impressionists' engagements with anarchism, and traces the gradual undermining of any strong correlation between artistic allegiance and political direction in the art world of the 1890s.

Throughout, there are sensitive discussions of such artists as Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, as well as Pissarro. Yet the touchstone of the book is Pissarro's intricate relationship to the various factions of the Paris art world. ... Read more

Product Description
Camille Pissarro is perhaps best known for the landscape paintings of his early career, yet in the final decade of his life (1893-1903) he began to depict urban scenes and his paintings from this period, of Paris, Rouen and the busy ports of Dieppe and Le Havre formed an important component of his artistic output. At this time Pissarro, like Monet, started to work on canvases in series, ofthen pointing several simultaneously and discarding one temporarily when the light, the weather or his mood altered. He started all of them at the scene and worked with extraordinary speed and deftness. In this book, the authors set Pissarro's cityscapes in their broad art-historical context, looking also at contemporary treatments of the urban scene by Vuillard, Bonnard and Toulouse-Lautrec. Using Pissarro's extensive correspondence from this period, they reveal the artist's own attitude towards his final works. The book includes a catatogue of Pissarro's urban series, each one introduced by an overview covering the history of the cityscape pictured and the production, exhibition history and early critical reception of the series. This book is the catalogue for an exhibition of Pissarro's cityscape paintings at the Dallas Museum of Art (November 15, 1992 - January 31, 1993). The exhibition will then be shown at the Philadelphia Museum of Art from March 7 to June 6, 1993 and at the Royal Academy in London from July 2 to October 10, 1993. ... Read more

Product Description
The letters of the Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro are well known. Here, with the replies of his painter son Lucien, the world of post-William Morris London appears to complement Camille's Paris. Lucien Pissarro was principally engaged after 1890 with his Eragny Press productions in London. His letters to Camille include technical discussions for the translation of drawings, sometimes by his father, to woodblocks engraved by Lucien, together with Lucien's reactions to his father's comments on work, art trends, personalities, and his own struggles for recognition and financial independence. In sum this substantial collection of letters, published in the original French, with extensive notes and illustrations, offers a unique source for anyone interested in English "aesthetic" life toward the end of the nineteenth century.
