5-0 out of 5 stars *Rembrandt deserves a Many-Tiered Birthday Cake for his 400 Candles*
Rembrandt van Rijn,a favorite artist of the Dutch school, was very young when he began studying to be a painter. He was 'on his own' by age 23 after only six months with a successful painter-instructor.It wasn't long before he was sought-out and moved to Amsterdam, a more convenient location for the many portrait commissions he accepted. Rembrandt never traveled very far from Leiden where he was born in July 15, 1606. Try to imagine - - tulips were not introduced to Holland until his lifetime! The flower had a tumultuous history of its own (read "TULIPOMANIA" >> isbn # 060980765x << & similar titles) - - fortunately tulips were NOT banned as an invasive plant. There is one beautifully shown in the floral "crown" worn by "Flora" - a painting now hanging in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, Russia. It demonstrates Rembrandt's delicate brush strokes and use of his palette.

Light and dark always played a primary "role" in van Rijn's works. The contrast, called by an Italian word>chiaroscuro< is often used whendescribingRembrandt's painting style. The artist was famous for this use of light & dark to show contrast; he avoided symmetry, 'toyed with' perspective - -and the paintings included in this book serve to illustrate these important characteristics of his art.

Rembrandt often chose topics to paint that reflected his interest in married love, and in Biblical stories. In the latter, Dutch people were painted in familiar, not Palestinian, settings. The painting of the Mennonite preacher and his wife was new to me, and of particular interest. The author tells us that "the Bible dominates one half of the (entire)canvas." Anatomy lessons were another traditional subject for large canvases at that time. These were called "memento mori" - -Individuals in such group paintings often paid to be included.

New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art inaugurated this series of books for young readers and it was an inspired project. The author sheds true light on the art without condescending to readers. There is something encouraging about the author's tone as he instructs us about the many artist 'tricks' that were used & now aid our understanding & appreciation of the Rembrandt's mastery.Muhlberger also points out how changes in personality can be detected in self-portraits done at different stages of Rembrandt's life. These self-portraits involved the complicated positioning of two mirrors.

Thank you, Rembrandt van Rijn, for your works that have enriched lives through the centuries. And mcHaiku adds sincerest thanks to Richard Muhlberger, who compiled and edited this excellent & very readable book for young people (and fortunate others). ... Read more

Product Description
Rembrandt changed the course of art history not only as a painter but also as a draftsman and printmaker. His output of some 300 etchings and drypoints represents a lifelong commitment to printmaking unequaled by any other 17th-century painter and comparable only to Picasso in our own time. Rembrandt's Journey unfolds the richness and diversity of Rembrandt's career as an etcher in the context of his paintings and drawings. Illustrated with nearly 200 works in all three media, this book traces the remarkable evolution of Rembrandt's art over four decades, from the robust physical energy of his early productions to the breadth, simplicity and meditative beauty of his later work. It establishes new and important connections among these works and among the three media that the artist explored throughout his career. It encompasses the wide range of his vision, from the tragic and spiritual to the earthy and comic. And it gives full due to Rembrandt's narrative sensibilities, showing how he endowed his figures (particularly in biblical scenes) with unprecedented psychological nuance and vividness. Published to accompany the first comprehensive American survey of his work in decades, Rembrandt's Journey offers a fresh, authoritative view of this endlessly familiar, yet still unknown, artist.Essays by Clifford S. Product Description

Rembrandt (1606–1669) is generally regarded as the finest painter of the Dutch “Golden Age.” This new edition of Art in the Making: Rembrandt (published on the 400th anniversary of the artist’s birth) reexamines 21 paintings firmly attributed to Rembrandt and 6 now assigned to followers. It reassesses his technique, materials, and working methods in the light of significant scholarly developments over the last 20 years, addressing problems of attribution that were hardly touched on in the original, groundbreaking edition of 1988.
Introductory essays by distinguished conservation, curatorial, and scientific specialists cover the artist’s studio and working methods, the training of painters in 17th-century Holland, and Rembrandt’s materials and technique. The essays are followed by handsomely illustrated catalogue entries on 27 paintings. A comprehensive bibliography provides a rich source of information about the practice of oil painting, not only for Rembrandt but for 17th-century Dutch painting in general.

Product Description
Rembrandt - Caravaggio highlights the two geniuses of baroque painting: Rembrandt, the preeminent artist of the Dutch Golden Age, and his Italian counterpart Michelangelo Merisi (also known as Il Caravaggio). Both artists are considered revolutionary innovators in Northern and Southern European art, respectively. With their origins in different painting traditions, each developed an original and striking visual language. The juxtaposition in pairs of paintings by the two artists intensifies the comparison of their work.

Although they never met – Caravaggio (1571-1610) died four years after the birth of Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) –many parallels can be drawn between the two master painters and their oeuvres. This is the first publication tocomprehensively compare the works of Rembrandt with those of Caravaggio. Exploring the use of contrasting colors andchiaroscuro, both artists achieved unexpected realistic detail. The stories conveyed in their paintings benefited from theirinnovative approaches to expressing emotional intensity. Caravaggio pioneered the use of intense light-dark contrast toheighten the drama of his paintings. Benefiting from Caravaggio’s ingenious use of light, Rembrandt developed his own use of light and shadow to underscore the inner emotions of the individuals he depicted.

Unsettling to their contemporaries, the realism of the works of Rembrandt and Caravaggio remains exceptionally compellingto this day. Both painters scrutinized humanity in their own way, amplifying the power and enigmatic qualities of major human themes, such as love, religion, sexuality and violence. Rembrandt and Caravaggio changed not only the course of painting, but also our perception of the world. ... Read more

This is the theme of Rembrandt Creates Rembrandt.Rembrandt's work in Leiden was already extraordinarily creative and intensely dramatic. In the years 1629 to 1631, the artist struggled to master different genres and techniques. He worked with Jan Lievens and took his first known pupil, Gerrit Dou. Product Description

Volume IV of A Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings deals uniquely with the self-portraits of Rembrandt. In a clearly written explanatory style the head of the Rembrandt Research Project and Editor of this Volume, Ernst van de Wetering, discusses the full body of work of paintings and etchings portraying Rembrandt. He sets the different parameters for accepting or rejecting a Rembrandt self-portrait as such, whilst also discussing the exact working environment of Rembrandt and his apprentices. This workshop setting created a surroundings where apprentices could be involved in working on Rembrandt paintings making it more difficult to determine the hand of the master. Van de Wetering, who is one of the Rembrandt experts of our day and age, goes down to great detail to explain how the different self-portraits are made and what techniques Rembrandt uses, also giving an overview of which paintings are to be attributed to the Dutch Master and which not.

In the additional catalogue the self-portraits are examined in detail. In clear and accessible explanatory text the different paintings are discussed, larded with immaculate images of each painting. Details are shown where possible, as well as the results of modern day technical imaging like X-radiography.

This work of art history and art research should be part of every serious art historical institute, university or museum. Nowhere in the art history have all Rembrandt’s self portraits been discussed in such detailed and comparative manner by an authority such as Ernst van de Wetering. This is a standard work for decades to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Rembrandt.

In her book Mariet Westerman guides us through the life and works of Rembrandt - from his earliest self-portraits to the introspective works of his later days. And she does so with empathy and a deep understanding of both the artist's character and the artistic, economic and social environment which he was a part of. Westerman writes in a matter-of-fact way without being superficial. Thus the book may be read by the specialist and novice alike and enhance the pleasure of both the next time they are confronted with the profound humanity of Rembrandt's art. This is no coffee-table book, but comes in a format made for reading and use in trains and galleries alike. Nevertheless, the book is beautifully illustrated with all the pictures relevant to a top biography of one of the most beloved artists in European culture. Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars A cross between Schama and Braudel.
If you can, imagine a slice of time and space from The Structures of Everyday Life set in the world of An Embarassment of Riches. If you keep that idea in your head, and spice it with the tone of an occasionally ironic French medievalist then you have a fairly good idea what it is like to read Daily Life in Rembrandt's Holland.

Daily Life looks at what living would have been like in the Netherlands from the years 1606 to 1669. These years were not only the demarcation of the life of Rembrandt, but also corresponded with the Dutch golden age. Instead of focusing on the great political and military movements that happened during that period (the end of hostilities with Spain and participation in the Thirty Years War), Zumthor chooses to write about the commonplace.

The book is structured in eight chapters, with the first seven chapters addressing major subject groupings. The chapters include: The Background of Daily Life, The Dutch Interior, The Course of Life, Recreations, Arts and Letters, Dutch Society, and Holland At Work. The final chapter is a brief summing up in which Zumthor makes a number of points about Dutch life during that period that I believe would still be interesting and relevant when related to the Dutch society of today.

Living in the Netherlands as an expatriate, I have read quite a few books about the history of the country in both English and Dutch. Daily Life is a fine addition to my collection, and a very enjoyable reading experience. The translation by Simon Watson Taylor is clean and smooth and managed to capture the obvious quirks of the tone of the author. It is a good complement to Schama's book An Embarrassment of Riches. If it is less of a book than the Schama it is because the more encyclopedic nature of the project lacked a bit of depth and narrative flow.

I would recommend this book to other expatriates living in the Netherlands who would like to know a bit more about the history of the country. I can imagine that it would also be invaluable to someone who wanted to get a feel for the background of life at that time. Please note that Rembrandt is not the subject of the book, and his life is only used as a ruler to mark the relevant time period.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good background reading for geneologists...
If you don't feel like reading Simom Schama's 600+ page EMBARRASSMENT OF RICHES, or Israel's 1100+ page THE DUTCH REPUBLIC, Simon Zumthor's DAILY LIFE IN REMBRANDT'S HOLLAND may be the book for you. Zumthor's book was written in French, and first published in English the early 1960s.My paperback copy was published in 1994 by Standford University as part of the "Daily Life" series.

If you're not particularly interested in the politics of the 17th Century, or the military action that took place during the various wars (which Schama and Israel cover in more detail), and you want to delve right into the everyday lives of the people, Zumthor's book allows you to do so. Zumthor covers everything from clothing to food to employment to housing to you name it--all those things all of us do that make up our daily lives.

The section on the artistic elements of Dutch society is relatively short, and Rembrandt is really only mentioned in passing, but you do get an impression of what he, and Vermeer, and other painters probably experienced as they went about their business.Rembrandt and the other painters were not seen as "artists" but rather as "painters" and as such were members of guilds--Medieval organizations that were organized by various occupational groups and still thrived in the first part of the 17th Century in the Netherlands. Zumthor spends some time discussing how the guilds worked and how they were regulated by not only their members but the towns and villages.

Zumthor also provides much interesting information about Dutch church life, community life, and home life and the obsession of the people with cleaning -- stoops, linens, clothes, but according to Zumthor, not always bodies. The Dutch in the 17th Century were a complicted folk, and although I have read Schama and Israel, I enjoyed this book. It's great background reading, especially if you wonder how your own ancestors lived. Read it with Poortvliet's illustrated books, however, as it lacks illustrations (my paperback copy did). ... Product Description
This lovely book pairs full-color reproductions of some of Rembrandt's most powerful religious paintings with finely crafted poems reflecting on them, prompting readers in turn to ponder the spiritual themes behind the Dutch master's famous artworks.

"Drawn to the Light" offers a fresh way of viewing this selection of Rembrandt's familiar masterpieces as well as the religious characters and events that inspired them. The book features eighteen of Rembrandt's paintings, each accompanied by an original poem that mines the religious and artistic expressions of the painting.

In addition to their stirring beauty, Rembrandt's artworks perceptively capture the poignancy and power of otherwise familiar stories from the Bible. Whether his subject was Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac, Moses' destruction of the tablets, David's reconciliation with Absalom, or Jesus' encounters with the woman at the well and with the disciples at Emmaus, Rembrandt strove to render a particular moment of decision, confrontation, or awakening.

Marilyn Chandler McEntyre, a gifted poet and art viewer, further enhances this facet of Rembrandt's work by focusing on its interpretive, evocative, and devotional dimensions. Some of her poems take readers imaginatively into what might have been the painter's process of reflection. Others turn our attention toward the actual moment Rembrandt was striving to represent, asking what it must have been like for those who experienced encounters with the divine and what their legacy might mean for us today. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars *Atransformingencounterwiththe WordinterpretedbyArt*
"Drawn to the Light"is the perfect book with which to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Rembrandt's birth. The meditative poems of Marilyn Chandler McEntyre will convince you that no full-blown biography is needed to appreciate the strengths of this artist. Your celebration should involve the opening of heart, mind and soul to Rembrandt's gift of shedding light - illuminating those aches we hold in common - the Joys, also.

Many will have absorbed vague prejudices, that Rembrandt was profligate. Yes, he did suffer his wife Saskia's death in 1642, and a traumatic bankruptcy in the mid-1650s. He was not known to be an active church-goer but his spirituality is revealed through his art. It is evident in his paintings from Biblical themes that his knowledge of these stories was not shallow.

Poet McEntyre must have experienced many different emotions as she studied the paintings, and wrote about Rembrandt's interpretations. Readers, too, doubtless have many varied reactions while studying these paintings, shown here in excellent reproduction.

In reverie I feel as though I've 'audited' three courses : in religion, painting & writing, and there has been revealed a new understanding of Rembrandt's ingenious use of brush & palette. Augmented by one's favored translation from the New Testament, it becomes an unforgettable encounter.

It isn't widely known that the famous "Return of the Prodigal" was left on Rembrandt's easel at his death and later completed by a pupil. The poignancy and power of this story in poetry and painting, foretelling a future of living with consequences- does make us more aware of the universality of an aching need for forgiveness. The painting is a threefold revelation with meditation, and the study of Henri Nouwen's "Return of the Prodigal Son"(isbn # 0385473079) and McEntyre's poem. The world could be transformed by such study, believes this reviewer.

5-0 out of 5 stars contemplative poetry on art
This book is a treat. As one explores Rembrandt and delights in McEntyre's poetic responses, a relationship of exploration and response is created. And through this process we, the readers, are encouraged to first pause with DRAWN TO THE LIGHT and then find our own poems and our own subjects worthy of exploring-a lovely invitation well worth taking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for personal meditation and communal religious retreats
I loved this book. The poems, like the art work, are beautiful and provocative. And true.I spent a peaceful, prayerful afternoon with it, but am looking forward to working with it at a women's conference and at another meeting where members enjoy experiencing art in various contexts. It would also be a great gift idea for homebound people, for it is both broadening but not intimidating.Experience it for yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something divine
Marilyn Chandler McEntyre, professor of English, is an accomplished poet, with grace and sensitivity that crosses artistic media and achieves great expression in volumes such as 'Drawn By the Light: Poems on Rembrandt's Religious Paintings.'

The layout and print quality of this text is remarkable. The colours leap from the page, even given the relatively muted tones and darker tones Rembrandt often used in his sacred topics. Some of the paintings in this small text are the most famous of Rembrandt's; besides his self-portrait on the cover, the book includes the following:

Two Scholars Disputing; Woman Bathing in a Stream; The Sacrifice of Isaac; Jacob Wrestling with the Angel; Jacob Blessing the Children of Joseph; Moses Smashing the Tablets; Hannah and Samuel; The Reconciliation of David and Absalom; Simeon with the Christ Child; The Head of Christ; Christ and the Woman of Samaria; The Return of the Prodigal Son; The Apostle Peter Denying Christ; Christ on the Cross; Christ at Emmaus; Self-Portrait as the Apostle Paul

Rembrandt had an art for taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary; he also brought the biblical stories into his own time period, in architecture, decoration, style of dress.McEntyre similarly brings the biblical stories and paintings into relief in words that are both timeless and current for the present. One cannot tell if the paintings adorn the poems or the poems adorn the paintings. The details brought out of the paintings, both in McEntyre's words and the highlighted sections of paintings assist in setting a mood of reflection that includes both the big picture and the details.

McEntyre's poetry sometimes seeks the thoughts and emotions of Rembrandt.Other times, the poetry seeks to elaborate upon and seek the meaning brought out in the paintings themselves. Her words invite emotional reflection, spiritual growth, theological inquiry, and a search into the mysteries of life, particularly life with God.God is in the shadows of the paintings; God is in the deep-etched faces of the people; God is in the verse.

God is also in the questions.Perhaps the most powerful piece here, and one of the most famous painting accompanying, is the Sacrifice of Isaac.McEntyre's verse speaks of the questions: 'What kind of God would require such appalling fidelity?'Of course, Abraham was faithful, but not without cost, as McEntrye continues that 'some madness will always haunt him', and Sarah his wife will always mistrust him, her eyes darkened with suspicion.

Further in the text, McEntyre explores another famous painting, the Return of the Prodigal Son.Here she speculates on the painter's gaze, as well as the human condition -- so little in life is private, and even reconciliation comes with a great cost. The prodigal son receives forgiveness, but the painting, like the gospel parable, is just a snapshot. The prodigal now returned will continue to bear his brother's enmity and be in his father's debt.McEntyre compares this with the attire of the prodigal -- that he will wear his past as a hair shirt regardless of the more festal vestments he dons over himself.

In all, this is a fascinating and wonderful text, a great meditation tool, and great for new insights into these important paintings. ... Read more

Product Description
Scrutinizing his own features time and time again, Rembrandt left an extensive pictorial autobiography-his surviving self-portraits include 45 oil paintings, scores of drawings, and over 30 etchings. This absorbing book explores how Rembrandt`s self-portraits developed over his life span, why the genre was so important in his work, and how his innovative style influenced his contemporaries.Amazon.com Review
Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) may not have been a handsome man, but he was an exceptional painter of himself. This sumptuous catalog, published to coincide with the exhibition of his self-portraits at the National Gallery in London, has glossy reproductions of all the paintings and etchings from the show, plus copies of works that are long lost and some not released by the galleries or private collectors who own them. The images are all thoroughly annotated to elucidate their history, and the scholarship is impressive, being mostly drawn from the Rembrandt Research Project, which for years has been working with a combination of x-ray technology and patient research to ascertain the age of the pictures and confirm the identity of their painter. This is not easy work: Rembrandt had many pupils, and he encouraged them to copy his own self-portraits as practice, leading to the unusual situation of a host of Rembrandt self-portraits not actually painted by the master himself. The findings of the project have been contentious, with paintings unexpectedly relegated or elevated through reappraisal. What shines through, though, is the sheer diversity of Rembrandt's genius: the early paintings and etchings in which he turns to a mirror to study expression; the periods of dressing up variously as an Oriental potentate, a soldier, an artisan, and St. Paul; and the famous trilogy of self-portraits painted in his final year that seem to show a man old beyond his years. The catalog also contains a selection of works by his pupils Gerrit Dou and Samuel van Hoogstraten and essays by Rembrandt scholars that seek to revise the somewhat romantic conceit that the series is some sort of spiritual autobiography. Rembrandt by Himself, an intelligent and resourceful accompaniment to the exhibition, will continue to transport the reader long after the portraits in the exhibition have returned to their respective homes. --David Vincent, Amazon.co.uk ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The autobiography as a series of masterpieces
Rembrandt tells his own story as a series of self- portraits. He traces his life from early youth to sad old age. He presents himself posing as if he understands the self can be a social construct. He creates great masterpieces including the Frick self- portrait where he sits as master and ruler , king of the world of art. He in telling his story looks deeply into his soul and traces a single life as no other painter before or since has. Even his great countryman Van Gogh cannot in his hair and soul raising self- portraits touch the depth and broad humanity of the Rembrandt self - portrait and soul .This is human art at its highest, and most inspiring. Who reads this book reads a great painter and great soul, one of mankind's greatest gifts to itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Master
It's about time that I found a (good) book on this subject. Rembrandts self-portraits (I feel) are of his most important work. The quality of the prints are wonderful...unlike 90% of the art related books floating around. The color reproduction is more accurate than most. This is a must have forany fan of Rembrandt...or for any true lover of painting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book on the self portraits of the master.
This book is facinating. It includes three good and fairly dry essays on the topic of Rembrandt's self portraits. More interesting are the prints of all the works that are considered his self portraits, and the detailedcommentary on these works. The prints are very good and quite useful forthe lover of Rembrandt. ... Read more

A painter celebrated for his portraits, Rembrandt excelled at capturing the sensuality of his subjects. This collection of drawings and prints showcases Rembrandt’s finest erotic work. Some of these pieces were originally created as studies, while others were intended solely for private enjoyment. Packaged to replicate an artist’s notebook, this latest volume in a popular series features an embossed cover and informative text. Its simplicity and beauty make it the perfect gift for a friend or a lover. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars What's here is easy to enjoy
So let's start with what to enjoy: the art. Most pieces are etchings; Rembrandt didn't invent etching, but arguably reinvented it. Others are drawings in sanguine, graphite, charcoal, or ink wash. Most aren't overtly erotic as I use the term, they're just nudes - as if R's artwork could be "just" anything. Among other things, those figure studies show how body fashions change over time. Back then, understated busts and fleshy figures defined the "It" girl; today, it's understated figures and fleshy busts. Go figure. Even if only a few drawings have clear sexual content, the others help sustain a likably physical mood.

The biggest things not to enjoy are the things not included in this pricey book. R's wonderful painting, "The Jewish Bride," wasn't a sketch, so it was cut - too bad, since I have happy personal associations with it far beyond any objective analysis of its content. And, although a man relieving his bladder was somehow considered erotic, R's famous sketch of a woman doing the same did not make it into this collection.

High production values make this book a solid artifact. Fine, dense printing on opaque, glare-free paper carry the images well. A delicate buff tone to the paper creates an ambience of age. Heavy stock gives it a substantive feel. It's short, though, just 31 numbered reproductions. Thick boards for the hardbound cover act a bit like a restaurant's fat-bottomed wineglass - they give the illusion of a big payload, but only an illusion. And, even if it's cute and gives that "top shelf" sense of exclusiveness, the die-cut covers and red ribbon tie-shut are just a bit precious. This is a very nice collection, but not quite as nice as it makes itself out to be.

Product Description
Rembrandt's masterful Bathsheba Reading King David's Letter is unusual both as a history painting and as a portrayal of a nude.Instead of displaying a sumptuous body for the viewer's delectation, Bathsheba elicits our empathy. This collection of essays by six leading Rembrandt scholars examines its qualities from perspectives ranging from changing perceptions of female beauty and the nude, to technical analysis, and biographical and psychological analysis of the artist, the subject, and the viewer. ...
