5-0 out of 5 stars A Gorgeous Gift Book
This beautiful, 72 page book is a great gift for art lovers and Christians. Its introduction explains Rembrandt's possible inspiration and some details for each work. The text of the KJV Bible gives the book a devotional quality. Both text and art make for good meditation during a busy Christmas season. My favorite is the drawing on the book's cover, shown in full on page 27. It's a tender portrait of Mary and Jesus, possibly modeled by Rembrandt's wife and first child. I think knowing that the child died after two months makes this drawing all the more poignant to me. Jesus, God Almighty incarnate as a human, was just as frail as Rembrandt's first born.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful marriage of art and scripture
This volume is a wonderful marriage of art by Rembrant and text from theGospel infancy narratives. Thus the book revolves around well knownepisodes: the annunciation, Mary's visit to Elizabeth, the birth of Johnthe Baptist, the birth of Jesus, the angel appearing to the shepherds ...etc.Some of the texts have multiple paintings and etchings associatedwith them; this has the effect of allowing the art more than the word totell the story. This is an excellent book for anyone interested inreligious or biblical art.

3-0 out of 5 stars Why so small?
The pictures of this book are very good and the text fits well, however, having copies of the other two books in this series, "The Life Of Christ" and "The Old Testament", I was a bit dissapointedwith the size of this book. The publishers seem to be attempting one ofthose "gift" books and in doing this they do a great disserviceto the artist. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I needed a nice coffee table book for a gift for a friend who loves cars. I bought this with the little bit of information given on Amazon, firstly because it was most recently written of the Bugatti books offered, and secondly, for the price, I hoped it would include the glossy photos of the old, beautiful Bugatti autos from the 1920's, 30's and 40's as well as the new Veyron.

When I received the book I could see that it is actually a book of an exhibit at the National Gallery of Victoria of works of the Bugatti family. If you are interested in this exhibit or in the furniture and sculpture of Carlo and Rembrant Bugatti, then you may be interested in this book.

I found the book disappointing thin and small. It is a little larger than 9 by 11 inches and only a half an inch thick. The book, just over 100 pages long, includes only 8 pages of color photos of 2 old cars (a red 1938 Type 57C Atalante designed by Jean Bugatti and a blue 1926 Type 37 designed by Ettore Bugatti.)

This book has a lovely cover, but inside it was not what I expected. ... Read more

From 1870 to 1935, the first true catalogues raisonnés of Rembrandt's paintings were produced, incorporating the results of individual connoisseurs' evaluations of authenticity and quality. This book, the first full-length study of this scholarly corpus, concentrates on the written connoisseurship of Wilhelm von Bode, Abraham Bredius, Cornelis Hofstede de Groot, and Wilhelm Valentiner, whose articles and catalogues first shaped the modern conception of Rembrandt as a painter. In addition to analyzing their written work, Scallen addresses the social context of their connoisseurial practices, as shaped by their museum careers and their relationships with dealers and collectors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book For Specialists
Rembrandt, Reputation, and the Practice of Connoisseurship focuses on a sixty-five year period from 1870 to 1935, when the number of works attributed to Rembrandt's oeuvre grew to a bloated 700 paintings, due in part to market demand for the artist's work, particularly in America. Scallen offers a detailed analysis of the accomplishments and methods of the leading Rembrandt scholars of the period: Wilhelm von Bode, Abraham Bredius, Cornelis Hofstede de Groot, and Wilhelm Valentiner. Scallen shows how the scholarship of all four, though rigorous and sophisticated, was in part influenced by market forces, as the expert attributions they issued (or "expertises") directly affected the value of art works and were, moreover, not issued for free. Scallen provides a sober examination of the Rembrandt literature of the period, including the archival work of Bredius and Hofstede de Groot, the various catalogues raisonnees, and interpretive articles - but, equally interesting, she also captures the personalities of the individual scholars and maps out the ways in which their personal animosities and intellectual turf wars often shaped the intimate details of their work and opinions. In light of the ongoing and controversial endeavors of the Rembrandt Research Project, Scallen's thoroughly documented and historical contextualized study of the attributions made by this earlier generation of experts gives rich food for thought. That said, it is definitely a book for specialists only. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Some of the world's greatest treasures are hidden away and have not been seen publicly for decades, sometimes for centuries. Others have been destroyed. They are not stolen property. They are simply private property, and no matter their public significance, the public has no claims on them. A capricious owner of Leonardo da Vinci's notebook would be perfectly within his rights to throw it in the fireplace, as James Joyce's grandson did with letters from the author's daughter, or Warren Harding's widow did with her husband's Teapot Dome papers. This is a book about such rights and why they are wrong.
Some incidents are famous. A great artist's mural is demolished because the rich man who commissioned it is offended by its political implications. One of America's most famous collections is closed to virtually every notable person in the art world, whose requests for visits produce only a postcard from the owner saying "go to Blazes." Scholars who seek access to the Dead Sea Scrolls, monopolized and secreted by a handful of individuals for nearly forty years, are dismissed as "slime," "fleas," "gang-snatchers," and "manure," and told, "You will not see these things in your lifetime."
Playing Darts with a Rembrandt explores abuses of ownership of cultural treasures in a wide range of settings, including material of historic and scientific interest, as well as art and antiquities. It examines the claims made on behalf of the public for preservation, protection, and access to important artifacts, balancing those claims against proprietary and privacy interests, and discusses the proper role of institutions such as museums and libraries that act as repositories. Acknowledging the complexities that sometimes arise (such as the claims of history against the desire of a great figure's family to withhold private letters), Playing Darts with a Rembrandt proposes a new species of qualified ownership: to own an object of great public importance is to become a "fortunate, if provisional, trustee, having no right to deprive others who value the objects as much as they do themselves."
The fascinating stories that comprise the bulk of the book, ranging from dinosaur excavations and the Dead Sea Scrolls to the fate of presidential papers and the secrets held by the Library of Congress, will be of interest to a wide range of general readers. The extensive discussion of collectors, and their role, should commend the book to those in the art world, as well as to those professionally associated with museums, libraries, and archives. While written in a readable and untechnical way, it should also be of interest to those in the legal community who are interested in the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of our property system.
"Sax turns his attention from public rights to conserve land and water to protection of cultural treasures. As always, he sees both sides of the argument and comes to reasoned and wise conclusions, balancing private and public interests. His prose is lucid, and his examples are both instructive and entertaining. An invaluable book for anyone interested in the preservation of our cultural resources." --I. Michael Heyman, Secretary, Smithsonian Institution

Until theearly seventeenth century, the distribution of paintings and other art works was in the hands of the artists, but after that to an increasing extent it was taken on by specialists. The most important art dealers were active in Amsterdam, the art centrepar excellence . Hendrick Uylenburgh and his son Gerrit Uylenburgh were leading figures among these dealers. The Uylenburghs, father and son, ran an art business and at the same time headed a painters' workshop where renowned artists worked. Rembrandt worked for this business from 1631 to 1635. He painted countless commissioned portraits and as well as historical paintings and troniesalso did grisailles and etchings. While working for this business he met Saskia Uylenburgh, a cousin of the art dealer, whom he married in 1634. Uylenburgh & Son provides insight into the nature and significance of the Uylenburghs' enterprise and also discusses their investors and customers. Product Description
Author Molly Blaisdell transports young readers to the city of Amsterdam in the 1650s. It is a time when world-renowned artist Rembrandt van Rijn is at the height of fame among his patronsÂ--and when his young son Titus longs to imitate his father and become a great painter. At first, Rembrandt rebuffs TitusÂ's attempts at drawing, telling the boy he is too young to learn art. But gradually, the master painter is won over by his sonÂ's enthusiasm and persistence, and he begins to teach a very happy Titus the basic techniques of drawing from life. Here is a warmhearted story for children, with illustrations that capture the atmosphere of seventeenth-century Holland and suggest some of the genius that radiates from RembrandtÂ's own magnificent paintings. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fun!
A great way to stimulate a child's curiosity about Art History! The story contrasts the intensity of the father with child's point of view. Nice layering of the story and beautiful illustrations. This story conveys the human story of an iconic artist through the developing relationship with his son.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clever way to make a famous artist relevant
This book makes Rembrandt relevant and relatable to kids by presenting the artist, in part, from the point of view of his son. The story makes us sympathetic to the son, Titus, and his own artistic development while showing a good view of life in the mid-seventeeth century and cleverly integrating the artist's work into the illustrations. Great for budding artists, young dog lovers, and history buffs alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful introduction to Rembrandt
This sensitively written book combines colorful illustration, historical information with a storyline that appeals to children and adults alike. You and your children will cheer young Titus on as he gains confidence and learns to draw with the help of his father, the great master, Rembrandt. This is a wonderful gift for the artist in all of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Window into Rembrandt's World
A beautiful book! I love the way the story is integrated with colorful modern illustrations juxtaposed with Rembrandt's own moody, emotive work. Blaisdell renders the world of this artist an inviting one by allowing us to view it through the eyes of Rembrandt's young son Titus. On one hand, Titus contends with a household of rambunctious pets who make a mess his father's studio, and on the other, struggles with his desire to win his father's approval. The gentle story-telling brings to life not only the world of a great artist, but the enduring warmth of a son's relationship with his father. It's clear that the mission of the book is to introduce kids to art and the artistic process, and the book definitely succeeds in this. Highly recommended. ... Read more

Product Description
With his words, Thomas Lloyd Qualls has painted for us a bridge between prose and poetry, between literary fiction and spirituality, and between every novel which has come before Waking Up at Rembrandt's and those which will follow. In the sanctuary of café rembrandt, all the little things that happen in a day are imbued with light. Whipping fresh cream is an act of poetry and pouring a drink is an act of faith. With a voice that is at once prophetic, immediate, and lyrical, a woman who is equal parts purveyor of spirits and spiritual guru leads us on a different kind of journey through the stories of three lives in transition. As the characters begin to wake up, we, too, are awakened from our slumber. Like the paintings of the master himself, Waking Up at Rembrandt's is a luminous work of art. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The text is lyrical and engaging from beginning to end
"Waking Up At Rembrandt's" is an impressive debut novel showcasing an undeniably talented and imaginative author. The setting is the cafe Rembrandt and involves a roster of memorable characters that includes Maggie (a world-weary lawyer), Dillon (an over-educated slacker); and Phillip (an struggling writer aspiring to literary greatness). Their individual stories are related through the perspective of the bartender Jillian who is also something of a spiritual guru who helps her charges to evolve and transform into an awareness of themselves and their possibilities. The text is lyrical and engaging from beginning to end as author Thomas Lloyd Qualls demonstrates an ability to paint with words the way Rembrandt was noted to paint with pigments. "Waking Up At Rembrandt's" is highly recommended reading and will leave the readers looking eagerly towards the author's next literary project. ... Read more
