Product Description
Few American artists are as enduringly popular as Frederic Remington (1861-1909). His bronzes and paintings of the American West have become iconic images, shaping the way Americans view the history of the West. This generously illustrated volume is the first to examine the exceptional collection of his works housed at the Frederic Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg, New York.

In his richly detailed portrait of the artist, Western art scholar Brian W. Dippie traces Remington’s life and artistic development. Drawing extensively on Remington’s letters, diaries, and other archival materials, Dippie explores some 100 of the most important works in the collection in the context of prevailing social, cultural, and political attitudes—including the ethnic and racial stereotypes for which Remington’s work is sometimes criticized today. An important addition to the Remington literature, this handsome volume highlights Remington’s impressive range and underscores his achievements as an illustrator, sculptor, and painter.Amazon.com Review
Cowboys and horses, adventure in wide-open spaces. The mythos of the Old West comes alive in the paintings, drawings, and sculptures of Frederic Remington (1861-1909). Born during the Civil War and educated at Yale University, Remington committed his life to making portraits of the American frontier. The Frederic Remington Art Museum Collection presents the collection of the museum founded by and housed in the former home of Remington's widow, Eva Caten Remington.

For much of his creative life, Remington worked as an illustrator for publications like Harper's Weekly. His renderings of life in the Old West were hugely successful, and some even accompanied an essay by President Theodore Roosevelt. His drawings displayed a strongly believable atmosphere:

[Remington's] illustrated scenes from the Apache War were rendered in a direct, spare and unsentimental style with an attention to detail that made them seem like snapshots of specific incidents. In truth, like much of Remington's reality, they were generalizations, not documents, created by extrapolating freely from firsthand observations.

Today Remington's work is often seen as problematic, and as evidence of the racist brutality that wiped out the American Indian culture and population. Of course, in Remington's time, his views of the frontier reflected those of most of the United States. Aside from these political complexities, Remington's work captures the imagery of a time and a landscape long gone. If you are fascinated by the Old West, then you should not miss this book. The book includes detailed commentary on the paintings and drawings, with 333 illustrations and 127 full-color plates. --J.P. Cohen ... Read more

A fantastic pictorial record of history, giving a flavour of the atmosphere surrounding events that complements contemporary sources and academic writing on the times.

4-0 out of 5 stars Remington the Artist and the Man
I have long been a fan of Remington's work. This book presented new material on both his work and on his life.I was impressed with the details presented in this book.I only wish there were even more samples of his work included in the book.I would have then given it a rating of 5 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars First material from Eva Remington's diaries
Here's a biography that will interest the artist's fans. It explores the extent to which Remington's Eastern roots and his determined and independent wife influenced his work.

Remington was a man of large appetites who, in spite of a pampered childhood, spotty academic career and a few business failures, established a solid reputation with his sketches. He then went on to worldwide acclaim for his bronzes and paintings.

The authors are the first to have access to Eva Remington's diaries, which provide new insight into the life of this great artist of the American West. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book for Young Artists
Fantastic Book for Young Artists

Absolutely wonderful child friendly books about artists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mike Venezia has lots of fun teaching young kids about the art of Frederic Remington
I have read a couple dozen of Mike Venezia's books in his Getting to Know the World's Greatest Artist series, and although I have not kept a careful count this volume on "Frederic Remington" might have more illustrations than any of the others. There are thirteen paintings by Remington, to go along with three magazine covers, three etchings, three cartoons, and one bronze sculpture. There are also three photographs of Remington, a painting by another artist, and nine of Venezia's cartoons. So that is three dozen illustrations (and I would say that Venezia does not even use some of Remington's most famous paintings, such as "The Scout: Friends or Foes?" and "The Fight for the Waterhole").As you would expect, most of the paintings represent the Old West, but there is also one from his coverage of the Spanish-American War ("Charge of the Rough Riders").

The point of these books is to introduce children to art and artists, and Venezia will not only provided biographical details on Remington's life, but insights into his art work.So Venezia talks about how Remington liked to paint running horses, and to make viewers wonder what was going to happen next and use their imagination to figure things out.The biographical part pretty much comes in the middle of the book, and then Venezia returns to examining Remington's work, including the way how he painted American Indians in his films changed over time.Consequently, whether you are a younger reader or one of the older variety, you will understand the basic details of Remington's life and the key themes of his artwork.

I always like the way Venezia uses humor to help his young readers learn key things about these artists. For example, when Remington became more successful he put on a great deal of weight and began working from a rocking chair (so he could easily lean back to view his work and quickly move forward to start painting again). So Venezia draws himself trying out both of Remington's technique and I would like to see young readers forget that image once they have seen it. There are more volumes in the Getting to Know the World's Greatest Artists series than there are illustrations in this particular volume, so you can keep checking out more of Venezia's books to learn about artists from Botticelli and El Greco to Picasso and Van Gogh, all done in the same spirit of fun.Bet you cannot read just one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Frederic Remington

Peggy and Harold Samuels are art dealer with a special interest in Frederic Remington, whose general artistic theme was the American West. Together they edited Remington's COLLECTED WRITINGS and published THE COMPLETE PRINTS (the latter subsequent to this biography), so it only seems natural that they would attempt a biography of the artist. The result is an exhilarating and detailed portrait of the man and the artist.

Remington was born in 1861 in upstate New York and studied art at Yale and the Art Students League in NYC. In 1880, he went out to the West for his health and began sketching western scenes and cowboys and Indians, which he sold first in Kansas City and then back East to magazines (especially HARPER'S WEEKLY). That magazine sent him all over the country. With his bride Eva, he spent two years in the West in the 1880s visiting military posts, Indian villages, and even traveling with the cavalry on campaigns. The illustrations and painting born of these trips (he returned to the West many times and covered the Spanish-American War as well) made him famous and wealthy. He also wrote books, mainly short story collections with western themes (PONY TRACKS was probably the best), but his success there never matched that as an artist. Late in his life he added sculpture to his oeuvre, producing two dozen pieces. He died of appendicitis at his estate in Connecticut in 1909.

The book opens in January 1908, with Remington feeding many original paintings into a large bonfire in his backyard, work he no longer cared about. The Samuels believe that he was consciously making a break with his past and was about to go off in a new direction, ending his career as a commercial illustrator, craving a wish to be considered a "serious" painter of the Impressionist school. The Samuels focus heavily on Remington the artist in this biography, yet because of their judicial use of his diaries they are able to capture the man as well as the artist. It's a fascinating work on a multi-faceted man. Highly recommended. ... Read more

Product Description
In the decade preceding his untimely death, Frederic Remington (1861-1909) produced a series of paintings that took as their subject the color of night. This richly illustrated volume is the first to present all of these works--some seventy paintings that secured for Remington the critical acclaim he so coveted. Indeed, these magnificent nocturnes marked an important new direction for the celebrated illustrator, writer, and sculptor of America's vanishing frontier.

In these deeply personal works, Remington explored the technical and aesthetic difficulties of painting darkness. Surprisingly, his images are filled with color and light--moonlight, firelight, candlelight. Focused on the subject the artist had made his own--the American West--these paintings reflect Remington's dramatic reworking of the narrative tradition as well as the spare modernism of his late work.

Frederic Remington: The Color of Night, accompanying the first exhibition devoted to the nocturnes, includes three insightful essays discussing Remington's nocturnes within the literary, historical, aesthetic, and technological context of his time. The nocturnes do much more than document a night that was rapidly disappearing under bright, newly installed electric lights. They also reveal how this son of a Civil War hero moved from burnishing Theodore Roosevelt's rough riding heroics in Cuba to exploring, like Stephen Crane and Ernest Hemingway, his own soul-searing war experience, and, like Joseph Conrad, to probing America's own heart of darkness.

As the definitive resource on Remington's nocturnes, this volume pairs large reproductions of these stunning paintings--including newly conserved works and others not seen publicly since the artist's death--with commentary from his personal diaries and letters and from contemporary critics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking!
I knew very little about Remington's works before buying this book.I had of course, seen many of the famous paintings, but I hadn't really looked seriously at this man's work.Frankly, the cover of this book caught my eye and then the themes of its compositions are what inspired me to buy.I was not disappointed. What a great introduction to the works of this very fine artist.Of all the books I have seen on Remington's paintings, this one is still by far, my favorite.

The printing of the paintings are very well done. They are so well reproduced that at times I felt that if I touched the print I would feel the brushstrokes. Each painting is also printed on one page alone which eliminates the annoying "lost in the gutter" effect of a two page spread. The prints themselves range in size from 8X6 to 6X9 (portrait) and generously cover as much of the page as possible. There are also diary notes from Remington's hand as well as commentary which gives context. There is also a section in the back that breaks down several of Remington's paintings as well as his palette and technique as put forth by those conservation experts who have restored some of his work.

I am very much drawn to the dramatic and entertaining qualities of paintings and works that are set during the night as well. There's so much inherent drama in the light and in the mystique of that time, that I very much enjoy when artists explore those hours in their own works.Maybe everyone is like this, but I enjoy the stillness and gentleness that seems to overcome the world after dark.Seeing that same love of night in this artist and his works has been very rewarding.

All in all, a really great buy and a very fine book.I think you'll like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars the nocturnes
This book is replete with Remington's night scenes. For the working artist/illustrator, this is the Bible of scenes depicting night and other low-light situations. As always, Remington's compositions are things of wonder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete and detailed
This book is divided in parts.
In the first part you will find the biography of Remington and all his artwork
In the second, there are all the "The color of the night" paintingsin big size with the description of each one.
As a bonus, there is a brief study of the technique that used Remington to paint these great paintings.
Great book about a great artist. ... Read more

Two days after I rode into the Pine Ridge Agency, very hungry and nearly frozen to death, having ridden with Captain Baldwin, of the staff, and a Mr. Miller all night long. I had to look after a poor horse, and see that he was groomed and fed, which require considerable tact and " hustling" in a busy camp. Then came my breakfast. That struck me as a serious matter at the time. There were wagons and soldiers—the burial party going to the Wounded Knee to do its solemn duty. I wanted to go very much. I stopped to think; in short, I hesitated, and of course was " lost," for after breakfast they had gone. Why did I not follow them ? Well, my natural prudence had been considerably strengthened a few days previously by a half-hour's interview with six painted Brule Sioux, who seemed to be in command of the situation. To briefly end the matter, the burial party was fired on, and my confidence in my own good judgment was vindicated to my own satisfaction.I rode over to the camp of the Seventh United States Cavalry, and met all the officers, both wounded and well, and a great many of the men. They told me their stories in that inimitable way which is studied art with warriors. To appreciate brevity you must go to a soldier. He shrugs his shoulders, and points to the bridge of his nose, which has had a piece cut out by a bullet, and says, " Rather close, but don't amount to much." An inch more, and some youngster would have had his promotion.I shall not here tell the story of the Seventh Cavalry fight with Big Foot's band of Sioux on the Wounded Knee ; that has been done in the... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pony Tracks
This is a great little book of western history, circa the nineteenth century.Anyone acquainted with the western cowboy era is familiar with Frederic Remington's art. Those recognizing him also as an artist in prose are a much smaller group.

In the early part of his life, Frederick Remington (1861-1909) was earning his keep as a journalist. He published "Pony Tracks in 1895.It is a collection of reports written from the American West for magazines.Readers will appreciate the skill of writing as much as the history. In addition, it is illustrated with the fine art work for which Remington is justly famous.

The stories range all across the American West and down into Mexico. He wrote several after traveling with various cavalry troops, including some lead by General Miles. There is also his account of a five-hundred mile stagecoach ride in Mexico in which Remington admits, "I'm a Jonah in a stagecoach, and that is not a superstition, but a fact amply proven by many trials."In addition to the trials and mishaps, he gives us an insightful description of the people, mules, and countryside.Another trip was with the soldiers policing Yellowstone Park prior to the creation of the National Park Service.

At another place a canoe trip provides an opportunity to combine the adrenaline-spawning excitement of white water with contemplation over a pipe beside the campfire."You drink in the spell of the forest and dream of the birch barks and the red warriors who did the same thing a couple of centuries since."

Anyone with a complete copy of "Pony Tracks" on their bookshelves must certainly treasure it.The University of Oklahoma has recognized the value and made it available.Unfortunately, it is a scanned copy flawed with smudges and other signs of heavy wear. Some of the illustrations are reordered but I didn't find any missing. In the absence of a copy from earlier publication, the book currently available new is well worth the price. If you are interested in a very early account of the Wild West, look it up.

Before he ascended to the highest office in the land as the United States’ youngest president, Theodore Roosevelt, with illustrations by Frederic Remington, though a New York City man born and bred, was a devotee of the Old West. In 1888, he published this charming ode to the American frontier, from the rewarding hard work of a rancher on the open plains to the pleasures of hunting the big game of mountains high. Today, the inimitable prose and infectious enthusiasm of Roosevelt’s writing here serves as much to limn a unique aspect of the character of the nation as it sings an elegy for a disappearing way of life. 2-0 out of 5 stars There's a better edition that's less expensive
What a great book - too bad the reproduction in this hardcover is not so good. Try Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail for an edition of this book with crisp illustrations, It's less than half the price brand new.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great book, lousy edition
Having misplaced my earlier printing of this book (by the University of Nebraska Press) I ordered the Kessinger Publishing, LLC release of this title, only to be terribly disappointed. The Remington drawings are so poorly reproduced that some appear as blacked-out, scarcely discernable blobs, rather than the wonderful sketches they originally were. This printing appears to be a very poorly-reproduced copy of earlier ones, with much quality lost.Find a copy of the extremely attractive Nebraska (Bison) edition instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vintage Teddy
From someone who has lived this life on the great plains from cowboy to hunter, this book is in every detail right on. It is written in Teddy's classic modest style (who else could float the Missouri during spring break up chasing criminals with guns and describe it with as much excitement as buttering toast).

It also is a repeat of some of his earlier works as this seems to be a bit of transitional book of when he was about leaving the Elkhorn for the east.
The Wilderness Hunter is more poetic and Hunting Trips of a Ranchman is a better read, but the history in this book of how Montana and the Dakotas were made safe by lynch justice makes this one interesting too.

The sketches by Remington are wonderfully historic to study and add a great deal to this book.
This book though is like all of Teddy's in settling down with a friend and always looking for his next book to find a campfire with him again.
Thank God Mr. Roosevelt wrote so many wonderful books.

5-0 out of 5 stars TR's Writing At Its Finest!
"Ranch Life And The Hunting Trail" is Theodore Roosevelt's narrative of his life and experiences during his time in the Dakota Territory of the 1880s.Published in 1888, it displays Roosevelt's writing at this finest. His picture words make the scenes come alive in all their splendor. This is a TR I never knew existed. For anyone with a love of western adventure, this book is it!

Besides providing the sheer enjoyment of reading, this book actually teaches the reader much about the life and economy of the era.I had always heard about the open range and the roundup, but this book makes the concepts clear.Cattle and horses were left to feed on the open range. The herds were divided during the roundup, with the calves given the brands of their mothers, as the way to assert property rights in the cattle. The devastation of a severe winter cannot be imagined until you read an eyewitness account, and few are written as well as this. The challenges of the hunt and the unique characters of the West can be experienced vicariously through the pages of this book.

Frederic Remington's illustrations add visual images to the written word.

This book is an excellent choice for anyone with longing for the lure of the Old West or a window into the world of Theodore Roosevelt.
