Product Description
The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, houses one of the most distinguished collections of works by Frederic Remington (1861-1909) in the country. Featuring Fight for the Water Hole, one of the icons of American art, and many other highlights, the Hogg Brothers Collection is remarkably comprehensive, representing an unparalleled survey of Remington's career.

This handsome and generously illustrated book showcases the most important works from this collection--including paintings, works on paper, and a bronze sculpture--establishing each within its appropriate historical, cultural, and political contexts. Drawing on unpublished archival information, the book discusses Remington's spectacular rise to fame as a popular illustrator who mythologized the experience of westward expansion and whose works created the enduring American cowboy archetype, while chronicling the rapidly disappearing Native American cultures. Later paintings in the collection, such as The Call for Help and Episode of the Buffalo Gun, which display rich colors and a bravura brushstroke, are considered anew in the context of previous technical achievement, including works by the French Impressionists.

The book begins with an introductory essay about Will Hogg--a contemporary of Remington and one of Houston's most prominent businessmen and philanthropists. In 1943, after the deaths of Will and his brother Mike, their sister Ima donated the works by Remington--in accordance with their wishes--to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. This essay is followed by twenty-two catalogue entries of the most important works in the collection and a conservation essay that details fascinating new information on Remington's technique. The book concludes with an illustrated checklist of all forty-one works by Remington in the Hogg Brothers Collection.

Frederic Remington will be of great appeal to those who have long loved and admired this unique American artist. And, with its new technical data and information, the book will also be a valuable addition to libraries of both students and scholars. ... Read more

Product Description
This engrossing book will change perceptions of Frederic Remington, an immensely popular American artist who has rarely been treated seriously by critics. Drawing on methods of art history, literary theory, psychoanalysis, and material culture studies, Nemerov shows that Remington`s paintings are not mere illustrations of the frontier experience but are complex, imaginative inventions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A SURPRISING LOOK A SOME SELDOM SEEN PRINTS

I came across this book at a 2nd-hand bookstore back in 1992 for $13.00 and it remains one of my favorite Remington volumes.

The main review mentions a 'disjointed text' but I do not notice nor agree with that opinion. There is nothing 'weak' about this book for any reader who enjoys Remington everything in this book should please.

I have a couple good Remington prints hanging in the family room, and until this book, could not come up with names for them nor much history concerning them. It is sometimes amazing just how much Remington is available but has remainded unseen by most readers. But thanks to this volume many seldom seen or never seen prints will be put before the interested reader. And since Mr. Remington, during one of his depression periods, saw fit to later burn most of these prints, this is not only the first book to publish the complete prints, but outside of being seen in this book, since they no longer exist, this is the only place they can be seen.

Again, thanks to Peggy and Harold Samuels, another book about Remington showing "the first definitive collection" of prints is now available. These two authors-authorities of western art have given us a new and fresh approach to some of Remington's western art.

Not only a good 'coffee table' book but one also excellent for your western art shelf as well.

Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for All on Fred Remington (Not just for Kids)
This is a wonderful book if you are interested in the Life and Works of Remington. It is good for young and old alike. This is a reasonably priced Art Book that is filled with pictures and interesting facts. It is a book that can be viewed over and over because of the beautiful artwork. If you are interested in great pictures of his art and less about reading facts this is the book for you.The pictures tell it all.

5-0 out of 5 stars An intelligent introduction to art for young children
As the mother of a six year-old, I'm grateful for the appearance of this series, The Life and Work of... There aren't many art books for children this age; most are simply too long and involved for young children. This profile of Remington is filled with large type text and a colorful narrative that is sure to appeal to children 4-8.Not only the beauty, but the variety and choice of illustrations are exceptional. My son and I really enjoyed the early photos that demonstrated for the first time how right Remington was: horses really do lift all four legs in the air for a split second. Given the helpful glossary at the end, I can't for the life of me understand why they didn't add a pronunciation guide. Still I won't take a star away from this series for the error, because I believe the book is more profitably shared by parent and child than read on its own. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Stories, But Hard To Read
The stories in this book are wonderful. Hilarious accounts of cowboy life in the Wild West cattle camp of Wolfville, Arizona in the late 1800s.

The typesetting in this book is unspeakably bad, however. It is apparent that proofreading and typesetting were omitted to cut costs. Frequent typos, clumsy punctuation and bizarre linebreaks make this book a chore to read. ... Read more
