Product Description
Pierre-Auguste Renoir once wrote to a friend,Although we don t eat every day, I m still quite cheerful.Like many painters, Renoir was always happy with a paintbrush in his hand. He was a productive Impressionist artist, creating more than 7,000 paintings, drawings, and sculptures during his lifetime. Renoir is best known for portraits of engaging children, lovely women, and sensual nudes. After years of struggle to earn enough money to eat and pay the rent, Renoir began making a comfortable living painting portraits of wealthy patrons. His fame grew, and his paintings sold to rich collectors. Despite his growing fame, Renoir remained a shy, humble family man. He adored his wife Aline and his children. He maintained close friendships with other artists Monet, Sisley, and Bazille. He had no interest in fame, just in painting beautiful pictures. Why shouldn t art be pretty?he asked. There are enough unpleasant things in the world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Blank Journal with a Literary Theme
This blank journal is meant for journaling about books read.It has literary quotes and beautiful reproductions of paintings depicting women reading. It is refreshing to have a blank book journal as so many of the others are organized in specific ways which may or may not suit an individual.I have filled up two of these journals and enjoy the art, the ability to use as much (or as little) space as I want to write about each book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best One-Volume Monograph Today
This is a large and magnificent book. It contains a scholary text and an abundance of large beautiful color plates. The book is a truly a pleasure to browse, but also serves as the best serious one-volume monograph on Renoir found on the market today. It is a certainly a lifetime keeper and is protected by a sturdy, illustrated slipcase.Typical of the kind of books published by Abbeville Press, it is worth its full price, let alone the "steal price" on Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Artist in the Fullest Sense of the Word
Pierre-Auguste Renoir was an artist in the fullest sense of the word.Thepaintings he left us show us the simplicity and sensuality of his times andtheir brilliant colors and joyous images express the passion of Renoir'sown soul.

The paradise of color and the changing effects of light wereRenoir's greatest gift to the world. This book, Renoir:The Crown ArtLibrary, showcases some of the artist's most beloved works and gives abrief overview of his life.

A quick glance at this book tells you thatRenoir's favorite subject was always people. In fact, it is possible toselect an entire series of masterpieces from Renoir's works withoutincluding even one landscape--something that would be impossible with anyof the other Impressionists.

The people created by Renoir are alwaysfilled with the warm joy of simply being alive.Of the many illustrationsin this book, most are in color, allowing us to both study and participatein the "joie de vivre" that Renoir, more than any other artist, communicated to the world.

There is a short analysis of the evolution ofRenoir's technique and we learn why he abandoned the dark, sombre colors ofthe Old Masters and turned to the brilliant reds, blues, yellows and greensof which he was so fond.

We learn how and why the feminine form becamea stronger and stronger element in his paintings, especially those of hislater years, and we see how, in the last ten years of his life, he limitedhis palette to only a few colors--cinnabar, ochre, Naples yellow, black andsome white, yet managed to create playful visions of a sun-bright world, seemingly devoid of weight; paintings in which contours of people andsurroundings are blurred and all is joined in a concord of color andnaturalness.

Renoir:The Crown Art Library is a wonderful introductionto the life and style of this master Impressionist, the world's most joyouspainter. Those looking for a biography of Renoir would be better offchoosing Renoir, My Father, by Jean Renoir, the artist's middle son. In-depth analyses of Impressionism and Renoir's own technique inparticular, are also better covered in other books such as Rewald's Historyof Impressionism.

But for the vast majority of people, laymen who onlywant to increase their knowledge and appreciation of the world's greatestartists, Renoir:The Crown Art Library offers a wonderful starting point. With is lavish illustrations and lively text, it will broaden the scope ofanyone's understanding. The book is a joy to browse and once insight isgained into the how and why of each painting, that joy is onlyincreased.

While certainly far from exhaustive, Renoir:The Crown ArtLibrary, is a lovely book and anyone with even a passing interest in Renoirand Impressionism will find it well worth their while.

4-0 out of 5 stars Renoir's Life

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed
My Mom was thrilled with this coloring book. It was exactly what she wanted - which I knew thanks to the Amazon wishlist!

2-0 out of 5 stars Art Therapy
Out of the (5) books I ordered, this is my least favorite but still good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelously interesting coloring book
I am an adult colorer and have done dozens of coloring books, most of them published by Dover.

I am currently coloring this one, and absolutely loving it.

The pictures are quite well rendered by Marty Noble, an illustration of a Renoir painting fills each page.I am finding them easy to do with markers or chalk.I think an older child could also do these pictures, age 10 & up.

The subjects are interesting, showing men, women and children in various everyday situations and activities from the time period in which these paintings were done--a mother & her children in their parlor, a man & woman dancing in a cafe, young girls in their pretty dresses, a husband & wife in the garden of their home, and others.

Furthermore, a small image of each painting is shown on the inside front & inside back covers of the coloring book for those who wish to make it like the original.

The title of each painting is given underneath the drawing inside the coloring book, together with information on the size of Renoir's painting and the year in which the painting was done, and a brief history of Renoir is also given just inside the front of the book.

Highly recommended.

Product Description
This large, lavish journey through the art of the 19th-century French landscape offers a host of masterful works, among them Corot's Forest of Fontainbleau, Millet's End of the Hamlet of Gruchy, Renoir's Rocky Crags at L'Estaque, and Monet's Rue de la Bavolle, Honfleur. As is often the case, however, some of the most wonderful things to see are also the least expected: rare and unusual monotypes by Degas, three states of a softground etching by Pissarro, and numerous works by some of their lesser-known but equally important contemporaries. Unlike previous books on the topic, Impressions of Light presents a unique and stunningly complete group of work that introduces a new level of complexity into the discussion of French landscapes. Rather than considering the landscape as a steady, linear development and the product of a single medium, it takes into account the many crosscurrents and intersecting developments in French art, from the Barbizon school through the post-Impressionist period. In addition, it studies the landscape in a variety of media--painting, prints, and photography--exploring both the individual artists' perceptions and the ways in which they influenced each other. With over 80 paintings and 70 works on paper from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston's collections, and published to accompany a major exhibition, Impressions of Light encompasses more than 100 years and 56 artists working in a dozen different media. It holds the broadest possible view, yet never loses sight of the extraordinary intricacy that makes the landscape so enduringly appealing. Artists Include:Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Huet, Odilon Redon, Jean-Francois Millet, Charles-Francois Daubigny, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cezanne, and Paul Gaugin among others.

Essays by Fronia E. Wissman, Karen E. Haas, Anne Havinga, Sue Welsh Reed and Barbara Stern Shapiro.
Introduction by George T.M. Shackelford.

4-0 out of 5 stars Come Visit Beautiful French Landscapes
The book Impressions of Light by George Shackleford et al is a companion book to an art exhibit of works from Boston's Museum of Fine Art. The paintings are landscapes created by France's greatest nineteenth century painters and photographers. Most of the painters are Impressionists but others schools are represented as well. The book also contains sketches which were part of the exhibit. The sketches, as well as the written commentary which accompanies many of them, allows the reader to better understand the creative process of the painters. The factual information in the book is very extensive and helps the readers see more in the works than normally meets the eye. Perhaps what is most interesting about this book and the collection of paintings and photographs included it is the plethora of lesser known works by these great artists. Readers, especially those who have been fortunate to view the exhibit, will be transported to the settings of these great works and gain a deeper appreciation of these great artists and photographers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A spectaculrly beautifully, illustrated art history
Impressions Of Light: The French Landscape From Corot To Monet is a lavishly, richly, spectaculrly beautifully, illustrated art history showcasing one hundred years of French art and 56 French artists. Included area wealth of rare and unusual monotypes by Degas, three states of a softground etching by Pissarro, and numerous illustrative works by lesser-known by equally significant contemporaries. Of particular interest is the attention paid to intersecting developments in French art from the Barbizon school through post-Impressionism. Enhanced with more than 80 paintings and 70 works on paper drawn from the MFA collections, showcasing the French landscape through painting, prints, and photography, Impressions Of Light deftly explores individual artists' perceptions as well as the manifold ways that influenced each other. Impressions Of Light will prove to be a welcome and much appreciated contribution to Art History collections in general, and 19th Century French landscape art and photography in particular. ...
