auguste rodin: watercolours and drawings
Love the book, something I have been waiting for for years since most focus on his sculptures.I gave it a four rating only because I wouldhave liked a larger format.The roughly 9.5" X 6" doesn't open flat and also it would have been nice to have larger sized reproductions.I was aware of the size and liked it anyway since it is certainly a good price for the number of illustrations.Definitely worth buying.

This book is certainly a treat for anyone who appreciates Rodin's work. Rodin's drawings are truly unique, and are well reproduced in this book. I would also recommend the Klimt and Schiele collections by this publisher as well.

This new monograph examines the life and works of Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), whose compelling career and legacy continue to captivate audiences, artists and critics alike. As one of the greatest and most prolific sculptors of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Rodin transformed sculpture-making and reinvigorated what was considered to be a dying art form. Born into a working-class family, Rodin had little formal education in the fine arts and struggled against poverty throughout his career. At an early age, he attended the Petite Ecole, a school for drawing and mathematics, learning skills aimed at the commercial sector. Then, having failed the entrance examinations for the Ecole des Beaux-Arts three times, Rodin supported himself by working for several commercial studios as an assistant for a few years. In 1863, devasted by the death of his beloved sister, Maria, the artist joined a religious community, the Order of the Blessed Sacrament, which was under the direction of Father Pierre-Julien Eymard, who would become the subject of one of Rodin's first sculptures.Realizing that religion was not his calling, Rodin returned to Paris, where he began to work in the studios of Albert Carrier-Belleuse, a fashionable commercial sculptor, who was to have a considerable impact on the art and career of the young sculptor. At this time, Rodin also began to work on his own, creating portraits of his father and studying the works of Rubens. After a trip to Italy in 1875, Rodin also studied the works of Michelangelo, whose influence was crucial to his development and his determination to be a sculptor. Rodin's signature style of working directly from the model was formed early with his "Man with the Broken Nose", which was rejected for the Salon exhibition in 1865, although the marble version was accepted ten years later. Rodin then created "The Age of Bronze", the first work in which a sense of his true potential can be seen. The originality of this work was met with resistance, and critics accused Rodin of making a cast from a live model, suspicious as they were of the incredible realism of the statue.In spite of this, Rodin's "The Age of Bronze" was purchased in 1880 by the French state, who subsequently commissioned the sculptor for the large entrance portal for the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, soon to be called "The Gates of Hell". Drawing inspiration from Dante's "The Divine Comedy" and Baudelaire's "Les Fleurs du Mal", Rodin created such masterpieces as "The Kiss", "The Thinker" and "The Three Shades", originally parts of "The Gates of Hell". Outstanding
Reviewed several Rodin books before choosing this one.Our friends said it is outstanding.We shipped it overseas, which was easy and quick with Amazon.Sort of nervous sending international, but no worries.

As a Rodin researcher, I find Catharine Lampert's book extremely useful as a reference. It is very insightful in providing three-dimensional characterization, particularly to Camille Claudel who played such an important part in influencing Rodin's style in the 1880's, serving both as a detailer (hands and feet) of his own works, a model and his lover while continuing to become a better and better sculptor in her own right. The book is a beautiful publication worthy of coffee-table display. The lure of the coffee table, however should be balanced by the posible reactions of those who may flip it open towards the end. Here one finds many of his drawings. Wonderful though they and his style are in the drafting field, there are quite a number of sketches that are also extremely explicit . I would not want my grandchildren to be 'hit' by these. Buy the book by all means but be forewarned to display, or not display, according to the company that surround your coffee table. Beautiful and physical
After "The Thinker," Rodin may be best known for "The Kiss" - that moving and elegant tribute to love's physical expression. It's only one of the master's studies of the topic.

This book opens with about fifty pages of biographical information, nicely illustrated with small insets, roughly a third of the page count. The real point of this book, however, is its collection of Rodin's art. We first see photographic studies of forty three sculptural works. These include single figures (like "Danaid") as well as couples, including "The Kiss", "The Eternal Idol," "Youth Triumphant," and others that vary in subject and mood. "Torso of Adele" captures one woman's voluptuous grace; "Walking Man" offers a simple statement of masculine power; "Pygmalion and Galatea" depicts a complex feeling that includes lowering oneself before the object of worship. A few black and white photos represent each piece, showing different angles and levels of detail. Unfortunately, the reader is at the mercy of the photographer's choices of views, which don't always depict the details one might want to examine. Choices of lighting and photographic reproduction also obscure some details, leaving the viewer as much tantalized as informed.

The end of the book reproduces 75 of Rodin's sketches and watercolor studies. Careful printing on opaque, bright paper brings out even the faint details in many of these works. These images cover a somewhat different range of sensibilites, including sprawling poses that tend towards the salacious. Others (e.g. "Sleeping Girl") depict more innocent views, and yet others (including "Sapphic Couple") go deeper into the erotic range. There's no contradiction between them; each is a point sample of Rodin's broad appreciation of women's beauty.

Rainer Crone does not cover the whole of Rodin's work, but doesn't try to. Instead this addresses one crucial segment of the total ouvre, and does so more thoroughly than broader studies can. This shouldn't be your only book on Rodin, but will complement your other studies of this masterful artist.

Heavy on the Art, But a Bit Confusing on the Eyes
I saw this book at the CMA and thought I'd write a review since no one has done so yet. This book is very nice for a paperback. Most of the writing, which I didn't really look at, was in the beginning of the book with the rest focusing primarily on reproductions of his sculpture. There were some photos of Rodin and the customary biographical information and a huge amount of reproductions of his work, most of which are good, but some are from angles that are not the best and some of the details are a bit confusing. With work like Rodin's that showcases a balance between the primitive and refined, it is important to get a clear shot in order to understand what it is that you are looking at. Some of the reproductions, while beautiful, are a bit confusing from that standpoint. Otherwise, a good book. I'll probably buy it myself someday, when I'm no longer a starving artist. ... Read more

History with grace
With two Cambodian-born children, this book is a treasured addition to our library. Beautifully told and illustrated, its graceful imagery draws children into the story, and with the muliple readings demanded soon has them practicing the hand poses and dreaming of dance.

My kids will be reading this for years, and I now give this as a gift for all new baby girls ... and Khmer boys, as well.

A beautifully presented picturebook story
Little Sap And Monsieur Rodin combines Michelle Lord's engaging text with impressive illustrations by Felicia Hoshino to tell the remarkable story of a young woman who in the year 1906 was a member of the dance troupe from the Royal Palace in Cambodia when they all made a trip to the beautiful city of Paris. Carrying young readers through Little Sap's encounter with the famous French artist, Augustine Rodin, Little Sap And Monsieur Rodin follows the painter and sculptor's interest with the classic beauty of Cambodian dance in general, and the dancing girl Little Sap in particular. A beautifully presented picturebook story, Little Sap And Monsieur Rodin will delight young readers and prove a popular addition to school and/or community library picturebook collections.

A wonderful book on many levels
Young girls especially will be able to identify with Little Sap as she starts her first dance class, all awkward and clumsy compared with the more experienced girls in the room.But as Little Sap grows more comfortable dancing, the reader grows more comfortable in the world of early 20th century Cambodia.And then the reader feels the same thrill Little Sap does when her dance group boards a huge ocean liner -- bringing along costumes, props, and even elephants! -- and sails for France.

The story is like a magical time machine that sends us back to a time when the world was much larger than it is today and foreign cultures were much more exotic. Cambodia of a century ago was a very artistic society, and the illustrations are superb in communicating the details of the clothing, dance, music, and architecture of the period.Together, the words and pictures convey a genuine sense of being there and sharing in the experiences of Little Sap.

A wonderful childrens book that tugs at the heartstrings
A truly delightful childrens book about a young cambodian girl who leaves her family and her village to become a dancer for the princess's royal dance troupe so that her family can have a better life.Along the way, she learns hard work and self worth.I found this to be an inspiring and touching story with a unique cultural angle not normally seen in childrens books.
The bright and colorful drawings bring the story to life.

I highly recommend this book!An exceptional book from a first time author that I hope publishes many more in the years to come.

Shall we dance?
They say not to judge a book by its cover.Obviously this rule is true some of the time.Some of the time, however, the cover is EXACTLY what you need to see in order to judge a book correctly.How many times have you seen a cheaply produced cover on a children's picture book also to find the story inside laughably simplistic?More than once, I'd wager.By and large, however, I do not seek out books based on what their covers look like.Then I took a gander at "Little Sap and Monsieur Rodin" and my little heart went pitter-pat.Oh how pretty.We've all seen those picture books that show a small child getting to know some great artistic figure.There was "Beethoven Lives Upstairs", and "Degas and the Little Dancer" (which bears no small resemblance to this book), and the truly disturbing "Picasso and the Girl With the Ponytail".What drew me to "Little Sap" however was partly its content.I don't know how many Cambodian picture books you can recite off the top of your head, but my count is pretty low.Add to that the fact that the book talks about Rodin (oddly ignored by picture books, by and large) and you've got yourself the makings of something particularly good.

The royal dance troupe of Cambodia is recruiting new members from a number of girls around the country.Little Sap is from a small village, but despite her dirty nails and awkward balance the child wins a place on the court's troupe.That means unceasing practice and training.Over the years she gains confidence and poise and is allowed to go to France with the troupe to perform abroad.While there they attract the attention of the great artist Auguste Rodin.Drawn to the dancers (no pun intended), Rodin spends much of his time in the villa where they stay, sketching their moves.Little Sap in particular gets his attention and by the end of their stay in France he purchases a pair of fancy French shoes and gives her a sketch of herself.The back of the book includes an Author's Note that describes the facts behind the story and what is and isn't true.

Rendered in ink, watercolor, acrylic, and paper collage the illustrations done by first-time picture book artist Felicia Hoshino are quite pleasant.Hoshino's girls wear silk sampot, or pantaloons, which let the girls look as if they're wearing slightly baggy pants all the time.This accurate detail has a dual purpose.On the one hand it means that the book is historically and culturally appropriate.On the other, it means that the girls in this book look particularly familiar to today's jean-shod young lasses.The style Hoshino uses here tends towards odd proportions in characters.Feet tend to be particularly small and heads particularly large.Just the same, this technique never strikes the reader as out of place.It's simply a different style.

Lord is careful to note at the back of her book that Little Sap's story is, for the most part, made up.There are elements to it, however, that were true.One thing I noticed in a photograph displayed of Rodin watching a dancer was that the performer is wearing a costume far more elaborate than any pictured in the book.During the professional dance of Robam Makaw the costumes are made evident, but we never get a scene similar to the one in the photo.One has to wonder why this is.Why, for example, did artist Felicia Hoshino choose to include plenty of scenes where the girls dance for Rodin, but not one where they are dressed up?Still, there was much to enjoy in this book.I was particularly pleased that Lord thought to include some of the hand motions mastered for the purpose of the dance.And though there isn't an official Bibliography at the back, a quick gander at the publication page shows the books, videos, and websites that Lord and Hoshino owe their aid to.

There are plenty of child-influences-great-artist type books out there, but by and large they are of white children with white artists.You'll still have the white artist in this book, but at least there's a bit of multiculturalism going on as well.You may be able to find Cambodian folktales in your local library, but not many will be stories based on real life occurrences involving the Khmer empire.A lovely little book and a nice story to boot. ... A lucid portrait of a master and his times

No stone left unturned
I think the author has done a heroic job of pulling together all the scraps of information about Rodin's life into a single tome.Rodin himself would have approved of the characterization of himself as a misunderstood genius who worked without compromise or the least hint of encouragement until he was almost 40.

But at over 600 pages in length (of which the first 80 page cover his family history and the first 35 years of his life), this is a book for the serious student or the masochist.Rodin is carefully described in context with the turn of the 20th century artist community he lived in and the rich society patrons who bought his art, the letters they wrote, the parties they attended.A story told in an enormous amount of detail with a single unwavering spotlight.

It is hard to believe that this book did not engender more attention or acclaim.It is absolutely the best I have ever read on Rodin the man and the artist.His life and background is presented in remarkable detail and photographs of many of his most famous works are presented.

His views on religion, love, sex, France, art- everything is here for the asking. His workings and interaction with the many artists are captured, and this is especially important since this was a particularly vibrant and intellectually fertile time in the history of art.His love for France and for all things French is expressed over and over.His letters give us a glimpse into the "real" man, the artist who finally married his lover toward the end of their lives.He was the man who challenged the world, leading the army of Romanticism forward, only to be called old-fashioned and out of date when he refused to change with the times.What a life and what a book! ... A Treasure Book from Rodin's Last Years of Work
Though very small in format and in brevity of content (a mere 64 pages with 38 illustrations), this little book serves art lovers and art historians well.Contained in this slight volume, and interspersed with cogent commentary by Norbert Wolf in both English and German, are Auguste Rodin's final sketches in pencil, watercolor and gouache of the female nude.Quite in contrast to his monumental sculptures these sketches reveal a different aspect of Rodin's genius - he introduces nude and nearly nude drawings of women in tandem, works that at the time of creation were scandalously dismissed as pornography.

It was presented by the deputy Lucien Gasparin to the commune of Salazie in 1931 and since then has gone through island history in unusual fashion. At first erected in the little village centre before the town hall, it was quickly dynamited off its pedestal by the priest, then successively kept in pieces behind a hair salon, repaired by welding, and at last moved several kilometres to the place where it still stands. There, it was once again torn off its pedestal by a tropical cyclone, then abandoned, face down on the ground, for twenty years before finally being found by chance during construction work in 1968. It was then put back in place, rehabilitated as a memorial to World War I dead, celebrated in magnificent public ceremonies, registered in the general inventory of historic monuments, and finally classified as such in 2004.
