Editorial Review

Product Description
A survey of the life and work of Alfred Sisley, one of the leading exponents of the Impressionist movement. The text examines how Sisley's painting life was devoted to the landscape. The author examines the tonal balance of such celebrated paintings as the snow-scenes of the Paris suburbs, views of the flooded Seine at Port-Marly and the colourful regattas on the Thames. The author recognizes that full recognition for the artist and his work only began after his relatively early death and argues that even now, his work is unjustifiably neglected. In studying Sisley's artistic development, the artist's English nationality, early career, struggle to earn a living, and secluded later years are examined. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sisley
I bought this book because I needed some color works of Sisley for my art project. I have to admit that some of the pictures were rather small, while others were 2 pages in detail. This book didn't have some of the pictures I wanted to use, but I managed.

For those of you who want to know, this book mainly has landscape.

5-0 out of 5 stars Siscley
This book was incredible! It had all the information my daughter needed for her art project on him. I loved looking through it too. The pictures were outstanding! I HIGHLY reccomend it to any art lover

3-0 out of 5 stars informative
I had to do a report on sisley, and while the book was informative, it wasquite lengthly. It did, however, have many good quality pictures. Iwouldn'trecommend buying this book unless you really enjoy Sisley, because it tooka lot of words to say the little information available on the illusiveimpressionist. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Alfred Sisley remains one of the least known of the major Impressionists. Although a prolific artist, the uneven quality of his output has made it difficult to clearly establish his particular place within the history of Impressionism. A major international exhibition (of which this is the catalogue) opens in London in July 1992 before moving on to Baltimore and the Musee d'Orsay in Paris. By concentrating on only the highest quality pictures from throughout his career, his contribution to the forging of Impressionism in the 1860s, his mastery of style in the 1870s and his resolution of the problems of technique in the 1880s are all explored and illustrated. In addition, his individual exploration of the idea of serial painting in the 1890s is also examined. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Born in France of English parents, Alfred Sisley is the least-known of the original group of painters who came be known as the Impressionists. Overshadowed for more than a century by his friends Monet, Renoir and Pissaro, he is at last receiving his deserved recognition. This biography of Sisley charts the development of his career from comfortable middle-class beginnings through the flowering of his artistic genius. Despite later poverty and continual critical neglect, the artist never wavered in his commitment to his paintings and his vision. He painted the world about him - churches, bridges, rivers, fields and trees in various moods and lights, and the changing sky which was his inspiration. His paintings, 60 of which are reproduced in this book, reflect the obsession with nature which was fundamental to the Impressionist movement. Vivienne Couldrey is a novelist and short-story writer, and the author of "The Art of Louis Comfort Tiffany". ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description

Although born and raised in France, Impressionist painter Alfred Sisley (1839–1899) was in fact from an English family and retained links with his ancestral homeland all his life. In 1874––after his participation in the first Impressionist Exhibition in Paris––Sisley enjoyed a summer break in London, where he painted lively studies of life and leisure along the Thames River, while fellow colleagues including Monet and Pissarro conducted similar studies in Paris and along the Seine. When Sisley traveled to Wales in 1897, principally to marry his long-term partner, he was enthralled by the dramatic scenery he encountered along the South Wales coastline. The pictures he produced from this trip were among his most free and boldly painted works.

Bringing together the beautiful paintings that Sisley created in England and Wales for the first time, this generously illustrated book provides an introduction to the artist and examines the impact his connection with these two countries had on his career as a French Impressionist.
