Stanley Spencer (1891-1959), among England's greatest 20th Century painters, did not receive a retrospective of his full work until 1980 at the Royal Academy of London. Three years later, 67 of his paintings and drawings finally reached New York City at the CDS Gallery, all of which are represented in this 60-pg catalogue.The exhibition was organized by art historian Roger Took, who not only wrote, warmly and painstakingly, the catalogue's introduction but also annotated, mostly at rewarding length, every work in the exhibition.
