Product Description
Published to coincide with a series of major exhibitions extending beyond 2007, Ascending Chaos is the first major retrospective of Japanese-American artist Masami Teraoka's prolific and acclaimed work thus far. In Teraoka's paintings—which have evolved from his wry mimicry of Japanese woodblock prints to much larger and complex canvasses reminiscent of Bosch and Brueghel—the political and the personal collide in a riot of sexually frank tableaux. Populated by geishas and goddesses, priests, and politicians, and prominent contemporary figures, these paintings are the spectacular next phase of a wildly inventive career. With essays by renowned art critics who discuss how Teraoka's work inventively marries east and west, sex and religion, Ascending Chaos is a critical overview of this cultural trickster. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
I love this artwork, and the hardbound book saves the pages nicely. It is in full color and so vivid!

5-0 out of 5 stars a great survey, fantastic introduction to an underappreciated master
I'm a curator who has followed this artist's work for twenty years, and this book is a wonderful compendium of images and information about an under-rated artist who is both a brilliant craftsman and a deeply imaginative imagist who has gradually moved from Japanese traditions to Western European traditions to radical effect. The essays are wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ascending Chaos.
Absolutely brilliant. Three erudite essays and a full showcase of reproductions of all Teraoka's work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoy the Chaos

Editorial Review

Product Description
Integrating traditional imagery and subject matter with pop art, Teraoka casts contemporary issues—from AIDS to computers, environmental degradation, and drive-by shootings—in historical guise. Humor and satire combine with a vibrant iconography drawn from Japanese and Western sources—catfish, trickster, fox, ghost, snake, ninja, samurai, geisha, Adam and Eve, punk rockers, and television. Teraoka's work moves from the indulgent pleasures of ukiyo, or the "floating world" of ancient theater and pleasure houses, to a chastened consciousness of death and evil with a majestic virtuosity unique in contemporary art. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Artist of the Pop-Cult Floating World
Produced by the University of Washington Press in connection with Masami Teraoka's exhibition at the 1998 Nagano Olympics entitled "From Tradition to Technology, the Floating World Comes of Age," this slim volume is everything an art book ought to be:long on imagery, spare of text.

Teraoka, an American of Japanese descent, employs a style of watercolor painting that is directly drawn from traditional ukiyo-e woodblock printmakers, most notably the work of the nineteenth-century artists Hokusai and Kuniyoshi.Imposed on this are images of twentieth-century pop culture, resulting in a riveting, sometimes shocking, commentary on both traditional and modern Japanese culture. As the curator who authors the text states, "These are not difficult works to understand or enjoy."

The book itself is beautifully rendered. The richness of the artwork, the vibrant design and the simple text all come together to form a small gem of an artbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars big suprise!

5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant Culture-Clash
This is the first full-length book on Teraoka. Hardback with dustjacket, sewn binding, black cloth over boards with gold details. 89 pp, large format, 2 pounds. Biography. Bibliography. 44 color illustrations throughout with some b&w photos of the artist at work.

Link's text provides biographical information, an even-handed and perceptive aesthetic appreciation, and vital historicity. Most welcome are his short commentaries on each image.

"...the artist joins the dissimilar conventions of traditional Japanese printmaking and pop art to comment with intelligence, satire, and compassion on the follies and preoccupations of popular culture. Whether the arrested majesty of a stormy Pacific wave, the passion of a sublimely erotic encounter, or the danger and devastation of AIDS, the subjects of Masami Teraoka's art are eloquent and essential."

Excerpt: Masami Teraoka (born 1936) is a contemporary artist. He was born in 1936 in the town of Onomichi, Japan. He studied from 1954-59 at the Kwansei Gakuin University in Kobe, Japan where he received his B.A. in Aesthetics. He moved to the United States in 1961 and from 1964-68 attended the Otis Art Institute now the Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, where he received a B.F.A. and M.F.A. His early work consisted primarily of watercolor paintings and prints that mimicked the flat, bold qualities of ukiyo-e woodblock prints. These paintings, done after his arrival in the United States, often featured the collision of the two cultures. Series such as McDonald's Hamburgers Invading Japan and 31 Flavors Invading Japan characterize themes in the work in this time period. These pieces blended reality with fantasy, humor with commentary, history with the present. In the 1980s, Teraoka shifted palette and scale to depict AIDS as a subject, transforming his ukiyo-e derived paintings into a darker realm. Since the late 1990s, he has been producing large-scale narrative paintings addressing social and political issues, especially abuses of power and sex in the Catholic Church. These large-scale paintings are inspired by well-known Renaissance paintings, rather than by Japanese woodblock prints. Teraoka has been the subject of more than 70 solo exhibitions, many of which have traveled extensively, including those organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1980; The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu in 1988; and the Yale University Art Gallery in 1998. Also in 1996 he ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3216962 ... Read more
