5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Duncan set up by tax evader
This terrific book is the museum show catalog for an amazing Tiffany exhibit organized by Alastair Duncan the world's top authority on Tiffany glass and the most prolific author on the subject. To address the review regarding his conviction for selling a stolen window it MUST be noted that he was set up by a crooked Tiffany dealerwho was working for a politically ambitious and corrupt federal prosecutor.

5-0 out of 5 stars however...
Mr. Duncan is currently being charged in connection with selling at least one stolen Tiffany window. He bought it for 30K andsold it to a party in Japan for 220K. The theft was not discovered until he tried to do it again 6 yrs later.

Editorial Review

Book Description

This beautiful book focuses on Laurelton Hall, Louis Comfort Tiffany’s extraordinary country estate in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York. Beginning in 1902, Tiffany (1848–1933) designed every aspect of the immense home, which had eighty-four rooms and eight levels, and extensive grounds into which the house was carefully integrated. Tiffany’s residential masterpiece was also a quasi-museum, for he filled it with his own works—windows, glassware, pottery, enamels, lamps, oil paintings, and watercolors—as well as with objects from his collections of Islamic, Asian, and Native American art.
Laurelton Hall burned down in 1957, but about ten years earlier most of its contents had been removed and sold. Every aspect of the estate is examined and re-created in this volume: its terraced gardens with fountains and pools; the many outbuildings; and Tiffany’s life there. The interior decoration of Laurelton Hall, a particular focus of the book, is represented by both numerous period photographs and newly commissioned color photography of surviving artworks and salvaged architectural components from the estate. For all who admire Tiffany and his work, this book presents a unique portrait of his remarkable home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great New Book on Tiffany Lamps
Over the years, there have been many books written on Tiffany's leaded glass lamps.

Most were very expensive, they had very biased opinions of the author, and some were down right full of technical errors!

I use these books as references to make my reproduction pieces. Without these resources, my job is a lot more difficult.

It is so refreshing to find a new book that not only has excellent quality photos, but also presents a fresh review of a very important topic!

Overall, I found very few technical miscues and I think this book is the best value on the planet for this niche. It contains several previously unpublished lamp patterns. The photos of actual equipment used at Tiffany Studios is very impressive. The authors did their homework!

If you want a great starter book for your library on Tiffany or just need a beautiful book for your coffee table, this book is a winner!

4-0 out of 5 stars Lamps of Tiffany
I really enjoyed this book. The color full page pictures are great.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive book on the subject, for glass artists or just droolers
I'd postponed writing a review of this book because I imagined that it was only fair to read the entire text before I wrote about it. I've never really gotten to concentrate on the words, though, because the photos are so, *SO* astonishingly beautiful.

This isn't simply a collection of lamp pictures, taken as though they're head-and-shoulders photos in a police lineup. Many of the lamps have multiple views, from very small (to show off how drapery glass was used, for instance), to a general detail shot, to photographs of the bases the company used to accompany the shade. The photography quality is excellent; you really see everything you need. A professional glass artist (or drooling amateur like myself) can see the details and understand why these lamps set the bar for stained glass. Even if you know NOTHING about the subject, you'll be blown away by the overwhelming prettiness of the material.

I'm not sure if this book represents every Tiffany lamp ever made, but it must come close. Additional images show related material, such as photos of Tiffany's Long Island home (wow), cartoons for lamps we've never seen, and Tiffany Studios' 1904 advertisements for its lamps. Most of the book, however, is a study of the lamps themselves, organized by topic (such as fauna or wetlands), and analyzed in some detail.

When I drag my eyes away, I can recognize that the prose is as complete as the photographs. In addition to the historical context in which the lamps were created, there's plenty of history and analysis about their manufacture. ("Another watercolor rendering in the collection in the Metropolitan Museum is for a Snowball shade [figure 93]. Here, because of the model's domical form, the designer compensated for the curvature of the surface by opening the top sections of the shade into a series of regular projections, just as a cartographer has to allow for the curvature of the globe.") Some of it is a bit dry and academic, at least for those of us who are here primarily to say, "ooh, how pretty!" but if you cared about the details, you would definitely appreciate its depth. In other words: there's plenty to look at, and there's plenty to read, depending on what you're looking for.

You can find a few other collections of Tiffany's works, but I can't imagine you'll find a better one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great New Tiffany Lamp Book
It is about time that another great book joins the volumes published in the 70's and 80's.There is some new information here as well as photos of lamps that have not been seen for years. This book is well worth the money for any fan of these incredible lamps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely Book
I saw this book in a museum bookstore and immediately came home and purchased it on Amazon. I'm a stained glass student and looking at this book really inspired me. The photographs are stunning and the book is packed full of great information about Louis Comfort Tiffany and his studio. Included are his drawings for a few windows, information about the methods used to make them, and there's even info on the process used to create the glass. Very informative and a joy to look at. ... Book Description
Few Americanartists have undergone such shifts in critical opinion as Louis Comfort Tiffany. Initially as a painter, then as an interior designer and experimenter in the medium of glass, Tiffany attained a position of great status in the arts. However, when America joined the First World War, many critics considered his art shallow and outdated and throughout the '30s and '40s, he was generally forgotten. By 1946, his revival had begun with an exhibition held at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York, organised by Edgar Kaufmann Jr, Lillian Nassau and Edward Wormley. This lovely book, published to accompany the traveling exhibition opening at the Seattle Art Museum in October 2005, showcases 120 objects, illustrating his wide-ranging interests and placing him in context with other significant artists of his time. ... Book Description
Alastair Duncan , the world-renowned authority on Louis C. Tiffany, has produced the definitive work on America's premier artist-designer, examining every facet of Tiffany's unrivalled achievements in a lifetime consecrated, in his own words, to 'The Quest of Beauty'. As Tiffany's wares have continued to rise in popularity since their resurgence in the 1950s, many collectors have focused on different aspects of Tiffany's work. Only Takeo Horiuchi, however, has built a comprehensive collection of masterworks in every artistic discipline to which Tiffany applied himself. This book, based on the superlative Louis C. Tiffany Garden Museum Collection formed by Mr. Horiuchi, presents a unique overview of every aspect of Tiffany's talent. For the first time it is possible to see the full range of Louis C. Tiffany's creativity from his famous lamps and windows to his lesser-known paintings and furniture. 5-0 out of 5 stars A real "fix" for the "Tiffanyhalic" - The Garden Museum Collection
So .......... you've seen all the books written about Louis C. Tiffany, and you've seen the pictures - over and over and over?NOT THIS TIME, my friend! This extraordinary work is destined to become as highly collected as any of Tiffany's works!

This is a huge book - 671 pages, filled with sumptuously photographed treasures, many shown for the first time. Printed on high quality stock, and presented in it's own slip case, this book feels absolutely "Imperial"!

Alastair Duncan guides us through the "mind boggling" collection assembled by Mr. Horiuchi, one of the greatest Tiffany collectors of the twentieth century. Louis C. Tiffany: Garden Museum Collection - presents virtually all of the known disciplines designed and manufactured by Louis Tiffany and his Tiffany Studios. Items include Tiffany's own paintings & photographs, plus a wealth of designs and watercolors from the design studios, windows, lamps, glass, pottery, metalwork, furniture, enamels, woodwork, silver, Liturgical items, and perhaps the most comprehensive selection of Tiffany's jewelry ever gathered in one place!

Additional chapters cover the effects of Tiffany on the Art Nouveau movement in Europe and America, and vice versa.Numerous European makers are discussed, with prime examples of their works - including complete rooms - represented.

If you own twenty books on Tiffany, or were to buy only one book to study and enjoy the extraordinary works of this great genius, this book is a must.Exhaustive in it's scope, timeless in it's beauty, this will be the benchmark for future writers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Collection of photos
This book gives a detailed account of Tiffanys works in most of the mediums he chose. The photographs are gorgeous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tiffany - A fabulous Book to Own
This is truly the most fabulous book on Tiffany's works, including many illustrations of works not previously seen.  As a Tiffany book collector, I know that Nuestadt's book may have more lamps illustrated, but none have the incomparable colors and qualities as the images in this book.  They are truly magnificent pictures (over 400 color plates)on a black ackground and are of the same quality as Sotheby & Christie's catalog pictures.  Tiffany at Auction by Alastair Duncan may be a collectors item, but having seen it, most of the pictures in that book are in black and white and do not begin to compare with this book.  While the Sotheby and & Christie catalogs display beautiful pictures, they only show what people choose to sell, unlike this book that shows treasures that I have never before seen in any of the books or catalogs that I have collected. But this book has so much more.  Almost every lamp picture has a close up of the actual pattern.  As a stained glass worker, these close ups are sufficient for you to reproduce the design.  The outstanding and superlative index at the rear contains small thumbnails of each work of art in the book with illuminating information and page number shown foreasy access to the item.  Actual copies of the Tiffany factory workbooks, similar to Nash's new Tiffany Notebook book, are included in this book.
Of course, this book also has the requisite biography of Tiffany.  One third of book is biography and windows, second third is lamps, and last third is vases, index and bibliography.
You will NOT be disappointed in this book - it's the best that is available as far as I am concerned. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice overview of Tiffany's work. Not exhaustive but affordable.
I've a few books on Tiffany's stained glass work, including the definitive collection of his lamps and a cut-out paperback with photos of various windows and lamps. In terms of price and coverage, this is a Goldilocksian "just right" middle choice for someone who doesn't want a major investment but is interested in the breadth of Tiffany's work.

Primarily, this book covers the works that are owned by the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, and in fact I bought my copy in its shop to help me remember my visit. (Aside: it is indeed among the best museum shops in the world, and I felt compelled to buy *something*.)

The museum does have an impressive Tiffany collection, including some of the works you've seen photographed in all the "usual places," such as his wysteria window, Autumn Landscape, and the dogwood window. It also has several lamps, vases, and -- possibly surprising to some people -- furniture, mosaics, boxes, and other items that don't get quite as much "airplay" but are still quite beautiful.

The book is separated into chapters on Tiffany's background, interiors, stained-glass windows, mosaics, favrile glass, lamps, enamels and ceramics, and jewelry, metalwork, and woodwork. The text is academic and a little dry, but suitable for the context. You learn about the provenance of the item rather than how it was constructed.

The photos are lovely, with plenty of closeups -- though not *quite* close enough, I found, for my stained-glass hobbyiest's eye. That is, the closeup of the Magnolias and Irises window shows enough detail for you to appreciate the glass and maybe the soldering, but you never see how amazingly the windows are plated. (Fortunately, the museum lets you take non-flash photos, so I have a few examples of my own.) You also see sketches and other in-progress designs, as well as other documents -- such as a drawing of a theater that Tiffany designed which was demolished in 1902.

But if an item isn't in the museum's collection, it isn't mentioned here; if you're looking for an exhaustive All About Tiffany book, this isn't it. It isn't *meant* to be an All About Tiffany book, and as other reviewers have noted, this doesn't focus on windows or lamps. And, at 100 pages, they can't include everything.

Personally, I was blown away by his mosaics (which I'd never seen before), and I realized why the favrile lamps earned him such a reputation (the photos here, like all the others, simply do not do them justice). So I'm very glad that I have this book in my growing collection; certainly, at the reasonable price it gives you a very good overview.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved This Book
I saw this exhibition at the Met in NYC and was enthralled by it.I showed the book to a fellow Tiffany lover and he said though he has many books on Tiffany there were items in this one he had never seen before.I say buy the book and then a ticket to NYC and go to the Met and see the originals. Both are worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brief Info on Book
Paperback, 100 pps, over 130 illustrations
A wonderful look at the full range of works by Tiffany.Photos on every page of designs, lamps, vases, mosaics and paintings, and even a peek at his studio and some of the glass workshops.Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I was looking for
I bought this book expecting to find many pictures of Tiffany's wonderful stained glass windows. In that, I was disappointed, hence the two stars. There is, however, a great sampling of Tiffany's work including jewelry, lamps, and an absolutely stunning green desk collection that I had neverseen before. In all it is a great collection of the artist's work andgives an excellent overview of his amazing depth.

However, since I waslooking for the stained glass windows, this book wasn't quite what I wassearching for.I hope to save someone else from the same mistake. ... Read more

The pattern book has a color cover showing probable color
choices for 16 windows and black and white outlines to enlarge
for stained glass makers. There are 60 pages of patterns with no
commentary as to original sizes, craft tips nor art highlights.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some Reviews are Misleading
This book does contain Tiffany window designs which Tiffany created using Tiffany glass not modern glass. They reproduce very well when scanned. I use them in computer application of the designs. The book which has thepostcards is "Tiffany Stained Glass Windows" by Alastair Duncan(ISBN: 0486253368)which I also bought. This book does have some coloredimages and when combined with the Duncan Postcards you can produce somenice images. Fifteen or sixteen of the postcards are images that are alsoin this book. I would suggest buyers consider getting them both.

4-0 out of 5 stars great projects
If you are into doing windows in the style of Tiffany you need this book...lots of beautiful patterns which can be enlarged at your local copy center. There are color illustrations of many of the patterns which should help in selecting glass but, as usual, the actual glass selection is up toyou. It would be nice if all the glass used was specifically identified(mfgr., cat. no., amount needed, etc.), but hey, then we wouldn't have allthe fun (?) of agonizing over the selection.

2-0 out of 5 stars The colorized images are attractive.
There are 60 designs, with 16 color images on the front and back cover. The line drawings are difficult to determine the color of glass to use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately, no colour chart for many patterns!
This book is a wonderful idea.Unfortunately, most of the patterns do not have a colour chart and it makes it impossible to guess whether a piece of glass should be leaf or sky or bloom from the shape.Given the time andeffort that would be required to complete these patterns in stained glass, not to mention the $$$ expense, I refuse to do suc risky guesswork. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Splendid Review of Tiffany
I found this book to be very good in providing historical data about Louis Comfort Tiffany.Additionally it shows a great representation of his blown glass work. The elements that I found disappointing was the lack ofemphasis on his stained glass window work directly, although it doesprovide some vivid photos of some of his lamps. His window creations weresomewhat neglected here in this text, which was one of his passions if youdo further historical research into the man's history. All in all, however, this is a beautiful representation of Tiffany's expansive talentsthat anyone would enjoy. It also has some great biographical data abouthim that makes for an interesting study.A must read for any Tiffanyenthusiast. Not a book to be passed up by any means.

4-0 out of 5 stars The importance of iridescence
Yes, there are books with more inspired texts on LC Tiffany. What sets this volume apart is the emphasis on what Tiffany himself considered his most important accomplishment, his technical and stylistic innovations with the glass itself. This aspect is abundantly and inspiringly illustrated; you will certainly enjoy, amongst others, the Egyptian, lava, and floriform vases. The lighting really captures the sheen, texture and brilliance of Tiffany glass. This must be the most complete illustrated collection of Tiffany vases ever.Lampshades which have unusual designs are presented, and some handsome photographs of the rose and the magnolia patterns are noteworthy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Important Compilation From One Who Spurred Tiffany's Revival
By the time Louis Comfort Tiffany died in 1933, the once world renouned artist was well on his way to obscurity. In 1954,Robert Koch, then a graduate student studying architecture at Yale University came across Tiffany's work. This introduction spawned a life long immersion in the artistry of Louis C. Tiffany. As a university professor of art history, Robert Koch's influence can be found in the revival of interest in the turn of the 20th century movements known as Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau. His most important contribution, however, has been in repopularizing Tiffany for later generations. Today, many volumes of uneven quality on Tiffany have been published. Most are simply picture books that dazzle the eye. All, however, owe much to the 1964 publication of Robert Koch's original "Rebel in Glass" that stirred the renewal of interest in Louis Tiffany by presenting not only important photographs but original scholarship that still is unsurpassed. The new "Collected Works of Robert Koch" brings together in one volume his three previously published books on Tiffany. As an added bonus, the reader will find new, luscious photographs that further cement Tiffany's place as one of America's most important artists. This book is a must, not only for Tiffany collectors but for anyone interested in the history of American art, Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts. ... Read more

Book Description
Louis Comfort Tiffany's blown art glass, made from 1891 to 1928, embodies the artist's superior workmanship and satisfied his dream to introduce objects of both usefulness and beauty into the average household. These lovely objects, which he named "Favrile" and made in his New York studio, display Tiffany's reverence for antique glass and include the colored, gold iridescent, blue iridescent, and opalescent forms featured in this book. 4-0 out of 5 stars Overall, an excellent book showcasing the best of Tiffany
This is both a book for collectors , and a "coffee table" beauty. The photos are superb, the items selected are the "best of the best", and the narrative is well-written. Unfortunately, those itemsmissing from the book are the Favrile tiles and small pieces--jewelry,scarabs; these are pieces that many collectors can afford and are stillavailable.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful, well written guide to Tiffany Favrile Glass.
The beautiful photos and well written commentary make this book the finest on the subject available. Detailed descriptions along with superior photo quality make this a must for new collectors and experts alike.
