5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful reproductions
The strongest point of this book is the quality of its color plates--whichof course makes or breaks an art book.Fortunately, the prints in thisbook are very rich and most images are full page. The accompanying text isalso very thorough, informative, and interesting. My only complaint isthat this book doesn't present much of the posters for whichToulouse-Lautrec is perhaps most famous; however, it does cover much of hisother work.In that sense, I got to learn a lot about the body of thisartist's work outside of the usual cliche of Toulouse-Lautrec.I wouldrecommend this book for any art library.

5-0 out of 5 stars He captured vivid scenes & will capture the young's interest
"Being able to show people in simple, real moments of their lives was one of Henri's greatest talents", p 18

The young reader will learn about Henri's being born into a rich family, his having broken both of hislegs in his early teenage years resulting in his small stature, and hisyears in Paris painting the life with which he came in contact.

Toulouse-Lautrec's painting of lively scenes of the theaters, dancehalls and circuses makes this a perfect choice for young children.HisMoulin Rouge advertisement prints are easy to read, uncluttered andtherefore grab the young reader's attention. The young are frequently inmotion. As a result they will appreciate Toulouse-Lautrec's ability tocapture a scene in mid motion. The young reader will be drawn in byHenri's choice of brilliant colors and will have fun finding Henri in someof his paintings.

Henri's portrait of van Gogh is breathtaking. He vanGogh'd van Gogh.He does honor to the painter by mimicking van Gogh'sstyle.

Venezia's illustrations are humorous. His narrative isdelightfully entertaining. His approach brings the artist within reach ofthe young. His illustration of the Parisian friends that Henri may haveintroduced to his parent's is jokingly exaggerated.

The size of the bookis perfect for smaller hands. It enables the young to haveart withintheir grasp.Venezia gives the locations of the paintings and as result ifthe child lives near one of the museums or will be near one on vacation,she/he would be able to see the original.

This is the 18th in Venezia's"Getting to know the World's Greatest Artist" series. He also hassimilar series on composers.Venezia's back cover illustrations tie backto the subject."Greatly influenced by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec,Mike also tries to capture the private moments ...".

The price ofthe book is well worth paying.The book contains the following: Toulouse-Lautrec's Paintings (13) and Prints (4), Photos ofToulouse-Lautrec - 2,Venezia's Illustrations - 6, Others'paintings/prints - 3. ... Read more

Product Description
The world of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was inhabited by denizens of the street and night life of fin-de-siecle Paris - with its dance halls, bars, brothels and circuses. Portraying this world in his paintings, drawings , posters and prints, Lautrec created a vibrant body of art that earned him lasting renown. Lautrec was born in 1864 into one of the oldest noble families in France. At the age of 13 it was discovered that he suffered from a genetic defect that prevented the bones in his legs from continuing to grow. Small in stature and singular in appearance, Lautrec lived his life with a passionate intensity, choosing to dwell among the Bohemian and exotic characters he depicted in his canvases. He died at the age of 37 after excessive drinking had severely debilitated and finally destroyed him. During his short career, however, he not only painted, drew, and designed posters, but also worked with stained glass and bookbindings. The essays in this book discuss the full range of Lautrec's career and artistic activities - from his youthful sketchbooks and examples of applied art to the seminal pictures and posters at the end of his life. The essays also focus on the cultural milieu and social history of the period, analyzing the marketplace in which Lautec worked, the implications of his exhibitions and his association with other artists, designers and literary figures. The book is the catalogue for an exhibition at the Hayward Gallery in London from October 10, 1991 to January 19, 1992 and at the Grand Palais in Paris from February 18 to June 1992. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a crippled genius
Toulouse-Lautrec is my favorite artist. He has always fascinated me the most, both his life and his work. He had one or two accidents as a child where his legs were broken and they stopped growing. As a result, he became a dwarf. This must have created a deep-seated inferiority complex in him that caused him, consciously or unconsciously, to draw unflattering caricatures of his contemporaries. But the drawing style was completely original and his own. He soon became famous for his lithographs or posters depicting entertainers at the Moulin Rouge, etc. He was highly productive but always a heavy drinker and inexhaustible party animal. In fact, it was his frequenting of brothels and romantic friendships with prostitutes that eventually did him in. He caught syphilis, a deadly 19th century venereal disease for which there was no cure in those days. However, he left behind some of the most unique Impressionist paintings of Parisian night-life ever painted.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for the Lautreccollector.
This is a well printed book that shows the beauty in the lines of Lautrec. Very little text, just a few pages to tell about this time in Lautrecs life. As with any good art book, it is about the images.

5-0 out of 5 stars The great Circus
This book is excellent!
Good print, good dimension and all images of The Circus (Lautrec's drawings).

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful learning experience
As an artist, this book has great appeal for me. The 8.5 by 11" is a good sized format to study the drawings easily. The reproductions are very good as well as the color.
I like the introduction wherein many interesting facts of the artist and his subjects are given.
It is a bit too light on technique, but, I feel this to be a very minor fault in the overall.
I would easily recomend this bookto anyone interested in the subject and or the artist. ... Read more

Product Description

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), scion of an ancient aristocratic family, was a crippled dwarf. His familys wealth gave him financial security, and he chose to become an artist. In Paris he was drawn to the world of the In the cafes, cabarets, dance halls and brothels he observed the theatre of life, viewing this world not from the moralizing standpoint of the 19th-century bourgeoisie, but with the eyes of one for whom all inhibitions had long since vanished. Lautrec had the gift of painting life as it is. No one else has captured the entertainment world of the belle poque in so unadulterated, so masterful and so timelessly true a manner as did Lautrec in his paintings, lithographs and posters. This monograph sets out to examine the close relations between Lautrec work and life. It thereby offers the reader a lively impression of Lautrec art, and at the same time provides an understanding of his private life and of the magnificent Paris of the belle poque.

Product Description

Toulouse-Lautrec possessed the extraordinary ability to convey rapid movement and scenic atmosphere with just a few strokes. A superb draftsman whose work was graphic in nature, he produced art of dazzling originality and power. This little-known volume includes 85 of his most striking early efforts, the majority of them studies of horses.

2-0 out of 5 stars Could Have Been More
I purchased this sketchbook with the hopes of gaining some insight into Toulouse-Latrec's sketch style by observing his pencils.

Not enough of them were towards completion, and the orientation of the sketches wasn't taken into consideration. Posssibly putting them in a uniformed sense, where looking at the sketches had to be seen by flipping the book more often then not.

I'll wide up looking for another book on his work, maybe something printed by Dover. They do great things. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, but a good reference nonetheless...
This book is old. First printing was in the 1960s, and the printing technology reflects it. All images are black and white, and there aren't that many of them in comparison with newer titles on Toulouse-Lautrec.

In its favor, however, there were some drawings and sketches in this book that I have yet to see anywhere else. So although the amount of content is modest, it is a useful reference.

I wouldn't pay more than $5 for this book.

This isn't exactly what I thought it was, but it is interesting. I do like it. It's just a picture book, there isn't really much info in it other than the little bio in the front. The paper stock is nice and for what it is, I thnk it was worth the money. ... Read more
