Product Description
As the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite array nears complete configuration, the versatility of the system is becoming apparent. Using GPS in combination with other techniques, such as PARE, DORIS, SLR, and VLBI allows for quick and highly accurate determinations of orbits, earth rotation, and crustal deformation. The papers in this volume examine the virtues of permanent satellite tracking networks and review the standards of GPS observation and analysis in geodesy and geodynamics. The papers presented in this volume are the result of an IAG symposium held during the XX General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics in Vienna, Austria, August 11-24, 1991. ... Product Description
In 1954, Antonio Marussi started a series of symposia in Venice. The first three of these covered the entire theoretical definition of 3-D geodesy as delineated in discussions with renowned contemporary scientists, particularly Martin Hotine. After Marussi's death, the symposia were finally named the Hotine-Marussi Symposia and were continued in Italy. The Third Hotine-Marussi Symposium was held in L'Aquila from May 30 to June 3, 1994. It provided geodesists interested in theory and methodology with the opportunity to discuss their theoretical achievements, as well as new topics in the geodetic sciences. This book thus provides an updated overview of the main geodetic theories in various fields of application. ... Read more

In this volume, the state of the art in geodesy is presented with special emphasis on the challenges of the next decade. It is subdivided into six parts. The first five parts discuss the challenges of providing a stable global reference at the parts per billion level by space methods, the impact of recently approved dedicated satellite missions on the determination of a high resolution global gravity field and its refinements by airborne gravity, advances in geodynamics and their impact on the monitoring of seismic hazards and earthquake prediction, the increasing use of GPS and INS in kinematic mode for mapping the Earth's surface and monitoring the behaviour of large man-made structures, and the related advances in mathematical theory and numerical techniques. The last part is dedicated to the discussion of a new structure for IAG to meet these challenges. ... Read more

Product Description
This volume arises from the conference Sediment Transport and Deposition by Particulate Gravity Currents held in the UK in 1998. The field of particulate gravity currents ranges from turbidity currents in the oceans, lakes and reservoirs to pyroclastic density currents and avalanches, debris flows and lahars, grainflows, powder snow avalanches, effluent dispersal and ancient gravity current deposits.

Although the sub-division of particulate gravity currents into discrete sub-categories (such as grain flows, turbidity currents or debris flows) provides a convenient descriptive shorthand, it undermines the sense of process continuum needed to describe many natural flows. The structure of this volume reflects an integrative aim, with papers grouped by research approach. The first section of the book contains six papers on theoretical and numerical modelling of a range of flow types. The following four papers are focused upon combined theoretical and experimental modelling approaches. The next section contains four papers describing experimental modelling and the final section includes five papers detailing field-based studies.

The volume stands as a testament to the broad range of research carried out on particulate gravity currents, and hints at the enhanced rate of progress that is likely to be achieved through further integrated studies.

5-0 out of 5 stars A picture is worth 10,000 words.
Dr. Arp has long advocated that quasars and other high redshift objects can be ejected from nearby lower redshift galaxies. This catalog presents numerous examples of the associations he finds between high redshift objects and their low redshift parents. The book begins with an overview of the patterns and then proceeds to an extensive catalog with maps, descriptions, lists, and recommended follow-up observations for each object.Seventeen color plates are found at the end of the catalog. The numerous examples are compelling and make a strong case for follow-up observations. The book is a good read and a great look! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have
This beautifully presented large hardback is actually a series of essays covering the story of the search for Longitude from the 16th century to the 19th. The essays deal with a range of subjects from the mathematical to the absurd, from astronomy to cartography and has 4 excellent appendices. The book is well laid out with both black&white and color photography in a manner that means you don't need to be a student of the sea of chronology to understand it. A good book to have on the shelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars review
Excellent book focused on the Longitude act's of the 1700's.The primary emphasis is on the two technologies Lunar-distance and chonometer for determining longitude with a precision under 1 degree. The relative percentages are: 50% chonometer, 30% lunar distance, 10% Jupiter's moons, 10% general history pre-1600's.I gave it four stars instead of 5 because I thought the book was going to be a balanced discussion ( i.e. equal time)encompassing all methods of determining longitude irrespective of a 1 degree precision. All that said, I would still recommend the book to anyone interested in the topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive coverage
This review is top notch and comprehensive. It's the book of choice to cover the background and the technology.I'm not a watch or clock fanatic, but I slam dunked this whole book in just a couple days; a 15 hour Qantasflight kept me captive.I wish there was more discussion on the nature ofastronomy and how the clocks were calibrated.I want to read up onoctants, sextants and basic navigation now. This book deserves five stars. The A&E four hour documentary, "Longitude", this month alsodeserves high marks. If someone knows of a good read on navigating withastronomy that's more layman oriented, please email me (thanks).

5-0 out of 5 stars Previous reviewers say "lavish"; I say gorgeous.
This book considers the problem of longitude from a number of viewpoints. While Dava Sobel's book concentrated on the Harrison/Maskelyne controversy, this volume uses historical, mathematical and geographic viewpoints. What is impressive is the genius, dedication and tenacity of the Renaissance scientists. They may not have had GPS but they knew what they were doing. ... Product Description

Just as in the era of great achievements by scientists such as Newton and Gauss, the mathematical theory of geodesy is continuing the tradition of producing exciting theoretical results, but today the advances are due to the great technological push in the era of satellites for earth observations and large computers for calculations. Every four years a symposium on methodological matters documents this ongoing development in many related underlying areas such as estimation theory, stochastic modelling, inverse problems, and satellite-positioning global-reference systems. This book presents those in geodesy and related sciences, including applied mathematics, many new results of high intellectual value that keep them on top of the latest happenings in the field.

Product Description
This symposium continued the tradition of mid-term meetings held between the joint symposia of International Geoid and Gravity Commissions. This time, geodynamics was chosen as the third topic to accompany the traditional topics of gravity and geoid. The symposium thus aimed at bringing together geodesists and geophysicists working in the general areas of gravity, geoid and geodynamics. Besides covering the traditional research areas, special attention was paid to the use of geodetic methods for geodynamics studies, dedicated satellite missions, airborne surveys, geodesy and geodynamics of arctic regions, and the integration of geodetic and geophysical information. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly moving collection of photos and quotes
One of my favorite books about outer space, and one to return to over and over. Both the photos and brief quotes are at times achingly beautiful, powerfully conveying the emotional depth of the astronauts' experiences. If you're looking for a book to give to a young person to show them the joy and wonder of the experience of going up into space, I can't think of a better one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh Perspectives on a Fragile Planet
Let's not forget we're living on a little planet, what some like to call spaceship earth. If earth is a spaceship, this is the owner's manual: THE HOME PLANET. Political boundaries are dissolved by a moon's-eye view of Earth to create bold visions of the planet through 150 color photographs culled from the American and then-Soviet archives. Commentary is provided solely by eloquent quotes from astronauts of 18 nations which are shown both in original language (be it Arabic, Chinese, Vietnamese, Hindi, Mongolian, French, German, Spanish, Hungarian, Romanian, Polish, Czech, Bulgarian, Dutch, or Russian) and English translation. The message is simple--we are all citizens of the same global nation.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent choice for anyone of any age
This superb coffee table book by Kevin W. Kelley is especially apt in this day and age, when so much in life feels precarious and precious.A simple and simply eloquent collection of photographs and quotations, it is so much more than the sum of its parts.

The astronauts who have either landed on the moon or have orbited the earth have so much to tell us and it's easy to see from the photographs why they feel words fail them.Luckily for us, words DON'T fail them. This select, small group of men and woman try mightily to tell us what their experiences were, and overwhelmingly they succeed in conveying the mystery and beauty they saw from their unique perches in space.A few of the better bits include:

"[From space] you have an almost dispassionate platform--remote, Olympian--and yet [seeing the earth from up there is] so moving that you can hardly believe how emotionally attached you are to those rough patterns shifting steadily below."
- THOMAS STAFFORD, USA

"O. Henry, the American writer, wrote in one of his stories that if you want to encourage the craft of murder, all you have to do is lock up two men for two months in an eighteen-by-twenty-four-foot room.Entering 'Salyut,' which was to be both our home and our office for six months, we told each other: We are brothers.I am you and you are me."
- VALERIE RYUMIN, USSR

"Before I flew, I was already aware of how small and vulnerable our planet is; but only when I saw it from space, in all its ineffable beauty and fragility, did I realize that humankind's most urgent task is to cherish and preserve it for future generations."
- SIGMUND JAHN, GERMANY

In no book that I can think of does the phrase "A picture is worth a thousand words" better fit.The photographs herein are astonishing in showing the exquisite planet we occupy.A view of England's North Sea coast looks like a slab of lapiz lazuli, its surface flecked with sparkle and hue.Canada's Lake Winnipeg from space has the appearance of something primal, almost fetal. The Indian Ocean off Madagascar looks like a sheet of slate over which some divine presence has tossed a handful of diamonds. So few of us can ever hope to share the experience of these men and women that this book is all the more precious, and beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only Being in Orbit Could Give You a Better View!!!!
This coffee table book presents some of the best photographs taken of the Earth and the Moon by both astronauts and cosmonauts.Due to the large size of the book, these photographs are even more stunning. In addition to the photographs, several quotes by those who have flown in space accompany each photograph.

One of things that I really liked about the book is that other than the small quotes, there is very little accompany text. The only real text is at the end of the book, where NASA's chief photographic planner describes "Why Space Photography?"I found thispart kind of chilling where he states, "it is a far more air-polluted Earth today than it was in the past ... twenty years ago"

5-0 out of 5 stars A new perspective
A wonderfully moving and beautifully compiled collection of images.Mountain ranges and river deltas dissolve into abstract designs of astounding beauty. The accompanying commentaries show a world united inspace in a way that is sadly absent on Earth. The book would make anybodywant to become an astronaut.

This is the perfect present for anyoccasion. It has touched the hearts of everyone I know who has ever seenit.Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For The Professional Or The Amateur, A Treasury Of Diverse Celestial Objects
An extraordinary and beautiful publication, this register of southern hemisphere galaxies surpasses Arp's 1966 compendium of northern objects in scope, detail, and variety. The plates, prints of black and white negatives from the U.K. Schmidt Telescope in Australia, inspire deep curiosity and evoke stunning beauty. Though presented without adornment in the plain style of an academic list, the images quicken a sense of the sacred, while also testifying to which strains of cosmological theory will endure. For example, do these pictures reveal evidences of galactic mergers and cannibalisms, or of galactic births and extended families?

The heart of Volume I ("Positions and Descriptions") is the full list with astronomical coordinates of 6445 galaxies and associations which Arp and Madore identified from 537 plates of the southern hemisphere during 8 years of research. Of greater interest to the non-specialist, though, Volume I also contains extended discussions of the categories which are used to classify the galaxies, and an informative Preface and Introduction which provide interesting background for Volume II.

Volume II ("Selected Photographs") contains 998 photographic negatives of representative members of each category, especially the spectacular examples. A visual feast, it also features addeddescriptions of the categories. This volume by itself is self-explanatory, and when purchased alone, suffices for the non-specialist.

I remember discovering the original 1966 Catalogue in the stacks of my college library. I spent hours and hours pondering its pages, astonished by its richness and inexplicability in terms of then-current theory. This 1987 catalog follows the organization of that first catalog, while improving upon the categories and illustrating them with yet more wondrous images of unorthodox-looking galaxies and the fields of objects surrounding them. These associations, in fact, held the keys to understanding galactic formation and to gaining a more accurate picture of the universe, Arp believed. Time will tell, I believe, that Arp was right, and that together with a select group of scientists, he has long been at the forefront of work that is leading to the most encompassing theory of cosmology yet developed. These catalogs are the mesmerizing record of that early work. They are, in relation to whatever new model which eventually will supplant the Big Bang theory (the Electric Universe model, most likely), perhaps what Galileo's Sidereus Nuncius is to the Copernican Revolution.

More affordable and accessible than the 1966 Catalogue, this southern catalog is a must-have for the collector.
